City of Santa Fe Sponsors More Free Self-Defense Classes

City of Santa Fe Sponsors More Free Self-Defense Classes

The City of Santa Fe has signed a new contract with IMPACT Personal Safety to provide additional self-defense classes to the public. The new contract covers five three-hour classes, including two for English speakers, two for Spanish speakers and one for residents age 55 and older. This is the first time that the Spanish language classes have been offered to the general public.

These classes are free and space is limited. One of the classes for English speakers has already been held; participants were selected from a waiting list of more than 300 people which was developed the last time the city sponsored self–defense classes with IMPACT. The other classes are scheduled to be held on the dates that follow:

• April 26 (for English speakers) 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
• May 17 (for those 55 and older) 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
• May 24 (for Spanish speakers) 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
• June 11 (for Spanish speakers) 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Additionally, IMPACT Personal Safety plans to offer classes for city employees this summer.

The city first signed a contract with IMPACT Personal Safety last year following a sudden increase in sexual assaults. Out of concern for the safety of constituents, City Councilors Patti Bushee, Rebecca Wurzburger and then Councilor Karen Heldmeyer, led the effort to approve a City sponsored free self-defense course to be led by the nonprofit agency IMPACT Personal Safety. IMPACT Personal Safety teaches self-defense techniques to men, women and children of all ages that are fast, effective and proven.

The basic PREPARE 3-hour self-defense course offers a wide range of personal safety skills including awareness and avoidance skills, verbal strategies and physical techniques. Physical skills are practiced full-force against fully padded instructors trained in re-creating common assault situations.
