DETAILS
1. Next school year needs 181 days of instruction
A fresh review of NM state statute and PED policy has revealed at least two areas where our information needed to be updated. This information was not presented at the convention, so please alert your support groups and your fellow home educators.

The last legislative session did increase the minimum number of school days for all districts by one day. While districts may provide more than the minimum, they may not provide less, and so the new minimum is at least 181 days.

Home schools are required by law to provide the same number of school days as their local district, so the new minimum for us is 181, and it would be a good idea to verify that with your local district as well.

The changes have not caught up with the PED website that informs home schoolers either, but we will update the CAPE website as quickly as possible.

The second change is that in the past, teacher in-service days were included with instructional days, and that is no longer the case. Instruction days are exclusive of in-service days.

All you need to do is plan for 181 or more instructional days in your 2008-2009 school year schedule, and keep a copy of that plan.

2. National Day of Prayer this Thursday, May 1, 2008.
This year’s theme comes from Psalm 28:7
"The Lord is my strength and shield;
My heart trusts in Him and I am helped."

In Santa Fe, one event will be in the Capitol Rotunda from 12 noon to 1:00.

Santa Fe pastor Glenn Strock reminds us all, “As a people our nation faces a future full of change and major social issues that will call for a firm foundation of prayer. Praise God that He inhabits the prayers of His people.”

If you can’t get to Santa Fe, most communities are also participating. Go to the National Day of Prayer Task Force website at www.ndptf.org for more information.

And, you can also make it a family day of prayer for the nation.

3. CAPE resource manual under revision
The CAPE-NM Resource Manual for Beginners and Veterans has been updated with inserts that reflect changes since the last printing. It is now undergoing a complete revision and will be republished before the end of the summer.
If you have always thought YOUR favorite curriculum or area of interest needs to be included, this is your chance to tell us! Please respond in the next two weeks. Suggested changes need to be made by May 10 to be considered.

4. Convention CDs are available
Miss the convention? Or maybe you attended and couldn’t figure out how to attend two or three workshops at once? Go to http://cape-nm.org/pages/capenm/convention/recordings.php
for CD and MP3 ordering information.

Blessings,
The CAPE-NM Board of Directors
