Thanks to Spanish Champs @ the Not Back to School Fair

A special thanks goes to Tim Keller of Spanish Champs who brought his lively music and way of learning Spanish to our Not Back to School Fair!

He spoke at our support night this past Tuesday and I wish every language were taught in the manner that he presented. Spanish Champs speaks to a whole family, whole body type of learning and I was very impressed with the way it would appeal to multiple learning styles!

He has a multilevel learning system where you can 'graduate' to the next level in Spanish and his plans for the future include a gathering of Spanish Champs classes around town and a program for teen bilingual babysitters!

I have searched many years for learning language resources for my oldest daughter and this is the best and most well-rounded program that I have come across!

If you are interested in his upcoming classes, forming a class of your own or just purchasing his materials please contact him at the information below:

Spanish Champs

Spanish Champs Classes: Offered in Albuquerque. We combine fun and dynamic classes with the world's best home reinforcement program. We also assess each child's language skills to determine their ongoing progress. Spanish Champs is a 7-level program that is not only fun, but challenges children at all levels of proficiency to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. We also offer Champs Summer Day Camps.

Spanish Champs Resources: Based on how language is learned naturally, Spanish Champs music and video programs provide a leveled learning plan with easy to use resources that keeps learning fun and interesting. The Spanish Champs music and video programs are fun, effective, and fit into a busy schedule. Great for children 2 to 10 years old. Spanish Champs Level 1 and Level 2 resources can be purchased online for use at home, preschool, or in the classroom.

New Mexico: Weekend Meteor Watch

Space Weather News for Aug. 30, 2007
http://spaceweather.com

WEEKEND METEORS: On Saturday morning, September 1st, a flurry of bright and colorful meteors might come streaming out of the constellation Auriga. The source of the shower is ancient Comet Kiess, which has laid down a trail of debris that Earth will cross this weekend.

But will a shower really materialize? Forecasters are divided. Some expect a brief but beautiful display rivaling the Perseids. Others say the debris stream is too empty for significant fireworks. Either way, the peak is due around 4:30 a.m. PDT (11:30 UT) on Saturday morning. This timing strongly favors sky watchers in Hawaii and western parts of North America all the way from Mexico to California to Alaska.

Spaceweather's full coverage of the Aurigid meteor shower begins Friday, Aug. 31, with links to live audio from a meteor radar, which will monitor activity throughout the weekend. Sky maps and more information are available now at http://spaceweather.com.

Young Composers To Share Stage with NMSO

On Friday, September 7, 2006 at 7 pm at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Journal Theatre, Hey, Mozart! New Mexico will recognize the pre-teen composers whose works were selected for inclusion in the 2007 Hey, Mozart! New Mexico CD.

Over 100 students 12 and under from across the state submitted original melodies for consideration in this second year of the project. 16 of these melodies were selected for orchestration and recording. In addition, the quality of many of the others was considered so high that an honorable mention category was added.

At the September 7 concert each child will perform his/her melody and then members of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Felberg will play the orchestrated versions. Bob Bishop of Classical KHFM 95.5 & 102.9 will emcee the event. The CD with the orchestrated melodies will be released at the ceremony. The concert and the reception afterwards are free and open to the public. Brookes McIntyre, president of the non-profit organization, says the free tickets are going fast. Tickets may be picked up at the NHCC box office or ordered through TicketMaster for a $0.75 fee.

The child composers include: from Albuquerque, Jocelyn Boyack, Stephanie Brener, Dylan Cuellar, Angela Jerkins, Simon Laird, Maia Scarpetta, Tankred Steinbach and Maya Vansuch; from Aztec, Sierra Stackhouse; from Bosque Farms, Benjamin D. Harris; from Corrales, John Paul Norman; from Las Cruces, Quintin Dean and Philip Miller; from Las Vegas, Sophia Wickert; from Placitas, Ian Kingsolver and from Rio Rancho, Christopher Musson.

The honorable mention category includes Las Cruces composers: Andrew Scott McLaughlin, Tiffani Montoya, Susana Navarro, Jazmine Quintela and Amalia Zeitlin. From Albuquerque come Tanner Boyack, Juliana Runnels, Sage Sarason, Abigail Schneebeck, and Emma Stevens. Toby Mueller of Tijeras completes the category.

At the free reception following the concert, children and audience members can speak with the project’s artistic and music directors, arrangers of the works and the NMSO musicians.

The concert is preceded by a free teacher workshop in composition with Maestro Alejandro Rutty, creator of the Hey, Mozart! project at 5:30 pm at the NHCC. As part of the NMSO, NHCC and Hey, Mozart! partnership, concerts also will be given at Edward Gonzales Elementary School on September 20. Los Alamos: Rock Climbing Class

From the Los Alamos Yahoo Group

Hello everyone...

I hope the school year is off to a good start.

I am putting out an interest list for an indoor rock climbing class at the YMCA. The class would have to be on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings (between 9am to Noonish; actual class day/time would be determined later). I am trying to find enough participants that I can work out a reasonable rate with my connections at the Y. Depending on interest level we might be able to do 2 classes and divide up younger kids 5-10 years from 10 and older. The class could accommodate beginners to experienced climbers. Climbing is great exercise! It builds self-confidence and coordination, not to mention it is a lot of fun. I have been climbing off and on for about 12 years (girls can do it too!!!) Smiley emoticon I would be instructing the class as a volunteer with a YMCA staff member assisting me. Please let me know as soon as possible if you might be interested in having your kiddos participate or if you have any questions give me a call 662-7069 or e-mail me at md2harrison@msn.com.
The fee will be based on the number of participants.

Thanks,

Michelle Harrison

Hello!

You expressed an interest in our programs during the ABQ Homeschool "Not Back To School Fair." I know that many of you already use the bosque as an outdoor classroom, but you may not have been aware that homeschool kids can take part in our group education programs just like kids attending schools.

If you're interested in having your kids learn from our staff and volunteer naturalists about the bosque ecosystem, please register for one of our programs! We need a group of at least 10 students plus 1 chaperone for every 7 kids (1:5 for kinder-aged kids and younger). Please see the attached brochure for more information and to register.

Albuquerque: Update on Art & Gym Classes at Raymond G. Sanchez CC

This is in regards to this previous post:

http://nmhomeschoolcommunity.blogspot.com/2007/08/albuquerque-art-gym-time-for.html

Just to clarify what the $10 per participant means…that is a ONE TIME ANNUAL FEE…in other words, the class is essentially free…and meets for two hours twice a week.

I talked to the guy who will be teaching the gym class. The kids will be doing sports, not just exercise or motor skills type stuff.

I talked to one of the ladies who will be teaching the art class, and she said they will be doing a lot of crafts, like bead projects.

So, if child is already enrolled in another exercise class and/or art class, I don’t think they’re going to be duplicating anything they are already doing.

They have started an enrollment list. You do have to go into the community center to put your child/ren on the list. You don’t pay the $10 until classes start on the 11th.

I suppose how long they run it will depend on the response from the homeschool community.

It is limited to 15 students.

TOMORROW NIGHT! Total Lunar Eclipse--Full Coverage

Space Weather News for Aug. 27, 2007
http://spaceweather.com

LUNAR ECLIPSE--FULL COVERAGE: On Tuesday, Aug. 28th, the full Moon will enter Earth's shadow for a 90-minute total eclipse. People on the Pacific side of Earth will have the best view as the Moon turns a dreamy shade of sunset red. Favored areas include the Americas (especially western North America), Hawaii, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, east Asia and Antarctica. The show begins Tuesday morning around 2 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time (0900 UT).

Although the dominant color of a lunar eclipse is red, sometimes another hue appears--turquoise. Earth's shadow has a turquoise-colored fringe caused by our planet's ozone layer, and this can be seen for a few beautiful moments at the onset of totality. Today's edition of spaceweather.com shows you what the turquoise fringe looks like and explains how to catch it.

Also, amateur astronomers are encouraged to assist NASA during the eclipse by scanning the darkened Moon for explosions caused by Helion meteoroid impacts. Typical flashes reach 6th magnitude--easy targets for mid-sized backyard telescopes equipped with digital video cameras. The eclipse is a great time to look for these "lunar meteors." Observing tips and more information are available at http://spaceweather.com.

Full coverage of the eclipse, including maps, animations, timetables and links to live webcasts, begins now on http://spaceweather.com .

Thanks to Fundamentals Gymnastics for their exhibitions & fun at the Not Back to School Fair!

Fundamentals Gym brought out their team boy & girl gymnasts to give exhibitions at the fair and they were just fantastic! Some of the team kids are homeschooled but the others were from local schools and we thank their parents for allowing them to come to our fair! All of the kids are wonderful performers and we wish them a successful gymnastics season!

After the exhibition Fundamentals provided mats and things to tumble and flip over and I knew it was a hit when the conference room suddenly only had the sounds of adults talking because the kids were all in the gym!

They have great classes for kids-boys & girls and I highly suggest you check it out. I have been involved in athletics my entire life and they are one of the few places I have experienced that works on the whole child and not just the athlete!

http://www.fundamentalsgym.com/

Thanks to Duke City Fencing for their exhibition at the Not Back to School Fair!

I wanted to send out a thank you to Duke City Fencing for attending our Not Back to School Fair on August 17th and providing us with an exciting demonstration of the sport of fencing! Those of you that were there received a demonstration using the sabre swords and then if you stayed to try it out you used plastic foil swords!

This sport is not movie sword fighting but it is just as fun to do and watch so check it out www.dukecityfencing.net they have classes for kids and adults!

They also have special classes just for homeschoolers! http://www.dukecityfencing.net/id1.html

Thanks to Shannon Decker & the Albuquerque Home Learners from the Homeschool Community!

I just wanted to tell those of you who do not know about this amazing person who was instrumental in emailing hundreds of schools and teachers in and around the Albuquerque Area in order to get free textbooks for the free textbook drive that occurred this summer. Shannon, with the help of Kari and many members of the Albuquerque Home Learners drove many, many, many miles and gained many sore muscles in the process of gathering these materials.

What was so fantastic is that there were homeschoolers that are on this NM Homeschool Community Network and not on the Albuquerque Home Learners that helped make this a wonderful community effort and I applaud all of you!

The Albuquerque Home Learners are not the only group in the area but they are one of the groups that make up this New Mexico homeschooling community! Check them out they might be right for your family www.abqhomelearners.org and perhaps they are not right for you but they welcome everyone to check out their forum and use the tons of resources they make available to the public!

OT Webresource: Snopes.com -Urban Legend Resource & Email fact checker

This is not about homeschooling but it can alleviate your fears when you get those chain emails or scary emails warning you that 'the sky is falling'....and believe me I fell victim to these several times until I discovered www.snopes.com . So the next time you get one of those emails warning you about something go to snopes.com and type the key words into the search bar and it will usually come up with the topic and help you separate the truth from the fiction. The really sad ones are the supposed kidnap or missing children emails and they usually (I say usually) turn out to be false and several times when I have gone to type in the supposed child's name it was a hoax. You can find all the hottest hoaxes on the front page on the left side. Have fun hunting I have found that things I had heard about even when I was a teen are (shocker) not true...lol...and it is a fun site as well I believe they even have classes in colleges now on urban legends!

The point it don't help these hoax makers get their jollies by passing on this stuff just check snopes and hit the all powerful delete button!

Even better DIRECTIONS

The Albuquerque Rocket Society launch site is 1 mile west of Progress and Rainbow in Rio Rancho.

Here are the directions to the site:
From Rio Rancho, go West on Northern Blvd to Unser Blvd.

Turn Right on Unser and go north to King [past Paseo Del Vulcan].

Turn Left on King and go west through the development. At Rainbow there is a stop sign and the pavement ends. Proceed another 1.1 mile West on King to Sheba. The street sign was down; it is a Right turn just below the crest of the rise.

Turn Right on Sheba and go north across the arroyo [see map]. The arroyo is quite reasonable, if it is not you are probably on the wrong cross street and should take a street to the west of the one you are on. Sheba makes two bends to the left after the arroyo. At the end of the 2nd bend turn Right [now north] on 8th Street. This sign was also down. The launch site is at the T intersection on the north side.

Parking for TITD is on the SW corner,

Albuquerque: NM Museum of Natural History & Science Homeschool Museum Programs

Greetings Home School Families,

There are some events this fall at the museum that I thought would be of interest to you.

First, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science is celebrating the International Polar year with Polar Palooza. A number of events are scheduled for the month of October (a full calendar of these polar related events is available at NMnaturalhistory.org)including the Polar Palooza Homeschool Family Day Tuesday October 23rd from 1 to 4 pm, which includes a special presentation by polar scientists at 2pm.

Second we are offering "Homeschoolin' on the Home Range Ecology Day" at the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center. Any age participants are welcome, but activities will be aimed at 8 to 12 year olds. For more information or to register, contact Susan Davis at Susan.davis@state.nm.us.

Finally, we are seeking teens aged 14 to 18 to participate in planning a youth-led teen science cafe program. There is an organizational meeting set for Tuesday September 4th at 4:30pm here at the museum. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

Because of the overwhelming amount of interest in last year's schedule, which is still listed on the web, we are reconsidering our decision to not offer future home school classes. Although it is too late to plan for fall, we are looking at a winter session that would start after the first of January. The target group would be upper elementary and subjects could include weather, solar system or ecology. Please keep monitoring the website; it will be updated as soon as are plans complete. I will also send a notice via this mailing list. Please feel free to pass this information along to anyone who might find it of interest.

Thank you all for your interest in the Natural History Museum,

Albuquerque Area: D.R.I.V.E. Homeschooled Teens Group

Hi Tabitha.

It was very nice to meet you at the homeschool fair. It was really a fantastic event! (Now I know what I have been missing all this time!)

You had asked me to compose an email to be sent out to your homeschool contacts. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your helpfulness- thank you.

Here is the email:

Dear homeschooling families,

Did you know that Albuquerque has a new group for homeschooled teens that focuses not only on great social gatherings but community service as well?

It’s called D.R.I.V.E. (which stands for dedication, responsibility, initiative, vision and enthusiasm)

D.R.I.V.E. is a Christian-based group and membership is FREE. Many events and activities will be free, although some may cost a small fee (i.e., bowling, skating, etc.). We will make every effort to negotiate group discounts and keep all costs as low as possible.

Since our group services the entire Albuquerque area, we will hold events throughout various parts of town to make it convenient for all families. If your teen does not live in Albuquerque but still wishes to participate, they are more than welcome to join if they have transportation to and from the meetings and events that they wish to attend.

We will be hosting the D.R.I.V.E. Kick-Off Meeting and Social in the community room at Title Wave Books (Eubank and Constitution) on Friday, August 31, 2007 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This will be a great time for everyone to get acquainted, have some fun and enjoy pizza and refreshments. There is no charge for this event.

Title Wave Books has been very gracious to offer the use of their community room as well as a same-day 15% discount to parents and teens who attend the D.R.I.V.E. Kick-Off Meeting and Social.

If you would like to come to the Kick-Off Meeting and Social, please R.S.V.P. by emailing Rosanna, the D.R.I.V.E. Coordinator at info@ABQTeenDrive.com. It is not mandatory to R.S.V.P. but it will help us to plan for the amount of pizza and other refreshments that we will need. Also, if you have already signed up for our group, you do not need to RSVP.

For more information about our group, please visit www.ABQTeenDrive.com.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Albuquerque Area: Presidential Physical Fitness Award

We have a great opportunity to encourage our children's physical fitness by testing and awarding based on national standards in September. Sandy Warfield (PE Teacher at LBJ Mid School) has volunteered to practice, test

and award homeschool kids and Sandia Prep High School as agreed to host the event.

The Presidential Physical Fitness Award has established percentile benchmarks for children ages 6-17 in five different test areas:
curl-ups or partial curl-ups,
shuttle run,
pull-ups or right angle push-ups
V-sit or sit and reach
endurance run/walk

Students who score at or above the 85%ile rank will receive the Presidential
Physical Fitness Award.
Students who score above the 50%ile rank will receive the National Physical
Fitness Award.
Students who score below the 50%ile rank will receive the Participation
Physical Fitness Award.
Find more information about the test by visiting this website:
http://www.presidentschallenge.org/educators/program_details/physical_fitness_test.aspx

This test result can be referenced on any applications to different experiences including things like Space Camp.

The event will happen on two Fridays from 4-6 pm. September 7 and 21.
On 9/7/07, we will practice the first four events (teaching the kids HOW to
do the test) and end by testing the 1 mile run/walk. You will want to start
walking/running with your kids now to build up their endurance. :)
9/21/07, will include the testing for the other four events and then awards.
To both evenings, the children should wear comfortable work out clothes
(tshirt and shorts) and athletic shoes (no flipflops or sandals- tennis
shoes with socks, please)! They should bring their own water bottle as well.

This event is open to the first 70 children who RSVP to
kathyhahn@earthlink.net. Please write PPFA (or Presidential Physical Fitness Test) in the subject line so my filter can identify your email as non-spam. In the text of your email, please include your child's/children's names and ages. Thank you! :)

New Mexico: 4 Exchange Students still in need of homes!

Tabbi, please pass this along. Thanks!

We're having lots of fun with our exchange student this year. She’s been with us since July 28th. So far we've met two other homeschool families who are also hosting students with the same exchange program. This year my children will get a chance to know our own student from Austria, a young lady from Spain, another young lady from Russia, and another from Bulgaria as well as students from many other countries.

All that is required of you is that you provide them with a place to sleep, food to eat, a place to wash their clothes and make sure they get to school. They can ride the public or school bus to and from school.

If you are interested in making a cultural experience part of your child's education, please contact me for more information on how you can host one of these students.

Final Weekend of Puss in Boots & News from The Box

FINAL WEEKEND FOR PUSS IN BOOTS!!!

You don't want to miss this show!

Fridays at 7:00 pm Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00pm

Tickets are $8.00

In the classic fairy tale “Puss in Boots,” the youngest son of a recently dead miller inherits nothing but the granary cat. In this revised version set in the 1980s, the division of property after a grocer's death leaves his youngest child with nothing but his father’s pet cat. The son contemplates sending the animal to the pound, but the cat bargains with him, promising him riches in return for a hat and a pair of boots. Though dubious, the punk-rocking son goes along with him and provides the items.

The School Days Entrance Gate Opens

At 8:30AM and Closes at 5:30 PM

To enter the Fair Grounds for School Days you must either enter at Gate 9 on Louisiana near Central or through Gate 1 on Central.

No buses will be allowed to enter the Fair Grounds through Gate 1

Only right turns are permitted onto the Fair Grounds from traffic lanes

Upon entering through either gate all buses will proceed to the School Days processing station near the red entrance gates. Once unloaded the buses will proceed to the bus-parking area on the south side of the parking lot.

Parking is free for all School Days Participants as long as they are in a school bus, or in any vehicle with a School Days parking permit. You will find such a permit within this packet, please make only the number of copies of the permit needed for the number of vehicles you indicated that your group would be coming to the Fair in.

Each day a list of School Day participants who are planning to attend the Fair that day will be given to the parking attendants at each gates. If you’re group is not on the list for that day, then you will have to pay for parking. This is the main reason for informing our office of the exact day, number of and type of vehicles you plan to come in.

Admission is free to all School Days students, teachers and escorts, but you must process into the Fair at the School Days entrance near the red gates.

Only those School Days participants who ambulatory and have been pre-approved will be permitted to enter the grounds at another entrance.

Since many public, private and charter school classes have time restraints on their visit to the Fair due to the scheduling of school buses, we are permitting a second School Days visit for classes from public, private and schools. This does not apply to Home Schools who do not have the same time restraints and can spend the entire day and evening at the Fair.

If you are bringing your class on a City Bus or on the Rapid Ride the costs are $1.00 for adults and 35 cents for students. Both the 66 Bus and the Rapid Ride stop on Central directly in front of Gate 1. The Louisiana Bus stops at the corner of Louisiana and Central next to gate 9. The San Pedro Bus runs until 9AM and after 3:00PM. If you’re taking the Lomas Bus, remember the School Days entrance is on the other side of the Fair Ground, a very long walk from anywhere on Lomas. Attached is a copy of the Bus Schedule for your route as well as any transfer routes you need to take.

Candidates are now encouraged to have at least a 3.25 GPA, four years of math, including one year beyond Algebra 2, and at least two years of a foreign language.
