Friday Enrichment Classes 2007-2008 School Year

Welcome to another year of Friday Enrichment Classes. This years classes will begin on September 7th, 2007. This year we will be meeting at Mountain Christian church located at 12242 Hwy N 14, Cedar Crest.

As we begin this new year of schooling thanking God that we are able to continue these classes and continue to ask his blessings upon us.

As was changed last year, there is a dress code for the classes and all events that run through the In Him group, including TAG. Young ladies are not allowed to wear spaghetti strap shirts without an additional shirt over that. No cleavage is to be exposed, and no bare midriffs. No short shorts or mini-skirts are allowed. Young men are not to have their pants hanging off of their behinds. If such clothing is worn to the classes, clothing that we have purchased and is clean will be given to the student to put over their clothing until the end of the school day.We want to always keep our dress code pleasing in the lord.

Secondly, we will start this year at Mountain Christian Church on N 14. We are very grateful to the church for allowing us to use their church. An insurance fee will be collected per family. There will be no facility fee paid to the church since the insurance premium is a request of the church in order for us to use the church. We will however work closely with the church to do several projects throughout the school year in helping the church with whatever may come up and need to be taken care of at the church, since they are allowing us to use the church free of charge.

As was started last year, each family will have to take a day of chaperoning. That will be a full day of chaperoning, irregardless if your child(ren) takes one class or all. On the class sign up sheet, please list your first 3 preferences for dates, I will fill in the calendar on a first come, first serve basis, and will send one (1) email at the beginning of Septemeber with dates and family members listed. IT IS EACH FAMILY’S RESPONSIBILITY to keep track of their dates and to find a replacement if need be. If the dates you have choosen are already taken, I will call you to find alternate dates. The chaperoning is not an option, it is a mandatory part of the classes, ALL that take a class, must chaperone.

A reminder that we are a closed campus, teens with a drivers licenses will need to bring lunch with them, since no one is allowed to leave in-between their classes. Also, no “visitors” are allowed at the church. This refers to friends of those taking the classes, boyfriends/girlfriends, etc. These classes are for our educatinal benefit not our social.

Cell phone use needs to be kept to a minimal. These classes again are for our educational benefit. If your child(ren) have a big gap between classes, please send bookwork from home for them to do. Time spent on the phone is a distraction to others.

These classes are age appropriate for those 5 years of age and older. Please pay attention to each class description for the different age requirements.

Included in this letter is our schedule for the year, classes offered with descriptions, amount of classes, and a Contact/Release of Liability Form.

The Discovering Geometry: An Inductive Approach Answer Key & Teacher’s Guide

Prerequisite:

Must have had Algebra I

Synopsis:

This is an inductive approach to the study of Geometry. The book assumes the student will be doing the learning and not just absorbing idle facts. I require the student to keep a notebook that will have the following sections, at least:

Vocabulary

Notes

(this will include notes from class and problem session as well as notes from the text – the student is required to read the text as well as do problems assigned from it)

Homework

Tests & Quizzes

Research Paper

Projects

Grades will be based on the Notebook, Tests, Research Paper, and Homework completion. I will not grade every homework assignment. I encourage the student to have access to the teacher’s guide and answer key. I saw some for sale at Amazon.

Topics covered include: Geometry in Art, Inductive Reasoning, Geometric Properties, Transformations & Tessellations, Area, Pythagorean Theorem, Volume, Ratio & Proportions, Trigonometry, Deductive Reasoning, and Proofs.

The class schedule would include a lecture time and problem solving time. Tests will be given on determined days and some will be take home. There will a final in May sometime.

All my classes have a short paper on a person influential in the study of that class. This would be a person who influenced or gave ideas toward the advancement of Geometry. The paper is to be two pages in length. I am looking more for mathematical and biographical information about the study and not completely grammatical (though readability is nice). Also, I am considering a few Geometric projects and group activities. That should be fun.

This syllabus is subject to change!

This class corresponds to Apologia Biology but can be beneficial for most Biology courses. There will be two labs that will be taken home to complete and one family genetics sheet to complete over the winter break. The students will need to read through the handouts given the week before class so they will understand the lab. We will discuss the concepts for each lab.

Students will need a 3-ring notebook, colored pencil set, pencils, and an old shirt, apron or lab coat to cover their clothes during the labs.
