READ CAREFULLY, I KNOW THIS IS A LOT OF INFORMATION TO PROCESS BUT I HAVE TRIED TO PARE IT DOWN TO THE NECESSITIES! IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK HOLLY DURING REGISTRATION OR MYSELF!

So here's what to do:

1. Click on this link http://www.explora.us/ExploraPHP/english/homeschoolsci.php
This also has the class syllabi and other class information on it, this is a private link just for our community and is not accessible to the general public.

2. Click on 'Registration Form', print this out.

3. Indicate the class you prefer. If Explora gets enough people they will open all classes.

All classes will ONLY run if full, if they do not fill by the time registration closes your money will be refunded to you. A full class is 16 kids with 20 being the maximum allowed in each class. It only benefits you and your children if you contact others who might be interested in these classes to fill them. Please feel free to send this email around to anyone that might be interested!

4. Holly in Reservations at Explora 224-8341. If she does not answer leave a message with your information, class choice and if you want to pay by card when she calls you back.

If you choose to pay by check or cash, bring the payment and the registration form down to Explora and leave it in an envelope with Holly's name on it with the front cashier. They will secure your payment until Holly can come down to collect them.

Bringing a payment and dropping it off will assure your child's spot in a class. You can try the mail but that is questionable at times.

5. PAYMENT IS EXPECTED UPON REGISTRATION.

6. You will receive a confirmation letter from Explora indicating what will be expected of you upon attending each class. If you volunteer to be the class contact you will be expected to maintain a list of who is volunteering and for which day. Parents who volunteer please make every effort to get in touch with your class contact if you can not make your scheduled time and day.

Parents with siblings that can not volunteer their time please let the class contact know and if there are not enough volunteers for a class Explora will provide some of their own.

On the registration form it indicates that they would like you to sit at a different table than your child when you volunteer, but if you or you child has issues with this it is NOT a big deal merely sit at the same table as your child and some other children and help ALL the kids at your table.

7. Parents who have special requirements for their children please indicate that you need to be in the classroom, etc. on the registration form.

8. Children in the K-1 and 2-4 Grade levels will need to be signed in and out of every class by their parent or guardian, your child will not be allowed to leave the classroom without their parent.

They are very strict about the ages and your child MUST be the age required by the day the class is scheduled to start.

You will be registering for the entire 14 week class semester, classes can not be paid and taken individually.

There are no multi-child or member discounts. Siblings (too young or too old or not enrolled in the specific class) will NOT be allowed in the classrooms.

PLEASE NOTE that for younger children the Growing a Scientist program is available through Explora's regular course of classes listed on the site! And there are other after school programs available also http://www.explora.us/ExploraPHP/english/index.php

9. Admission is not included in your fees, you must pay to use the facilities before and after classes and this includes parents and siblings waiting for their children during class time.

Article: The Great American Textbook Scandal

This is a reminder to all of us no matter if it is textbooks, newspapers, books, etc. to tell our kids that just because it says it in print does not mean it is always true. To allow our children to question is a part of learning. Obviously there are errors in textbooks and to those of who picked some up from the free textbook drive lately this is a reminder to use the textbooks and not allow them to use you and nothing is every perfect!--Have fun homeschooling!--Tabbi

The Great American Textbook Scandal

ONE DAY IN MARCH OF last year Leonard Tramiel, a balding, dark-bearded man of 45, sat alone in a science classroom in Milpitas, a middle-class community on the south end of San Francisco Bay. Having earned a Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University and having made a bundle in Silicon Valley, Tramiel now taught occasionally around the Bay Area as a volunteer.

Savoring a few quiet moments before 30 eighth graders surged into the classroom, Tramiel opened their astronomy textbook, Prentice Hall's Exploring The Universe, to the lesson for the day. Tramiel was surprised to see that Prentice Hall had inadvertently reversed two photographic images, giving a misleading impression of how the moon looks as it passes through its phases. Tramiel turned back a page. The book said that the moon probably had been born when a giant asteroid had struck the earth, tearing a chunk of material from the planet, and that the Pacific Ocean may be the hole left behind. What was this doing in a science textbook? The asteroid theory hadn't been taken seriously for over 30 years. Tramiel turned back another page and read that the far, or dark, side of the moon had been photographed for the first time by the Lunar Orbiter, a U.S. space probe. He knew for a fact that the Soviets had taken those first photographs.

Three errors in three pages. At home that night, Tramiel read the textbook cover to cover and found dozens of errors--of fact, of interpretation, of concept.

Article: Secret of scientific success? Lots of high School math

Secret of scientific success? Lots of high school math

Study finds that students with extensive exposure to math in high school do better in all sciences in college.

By Randolph E. Schmid, Associated Press

Last update: July 26, 2007 – 8:36 PM
WASHINGTON - Students who had more math courses in high school did better in all types of science once they got to college, researchers say.

On the other hand, while high school courses in biology, chemistry or physics improved college performance in each of the individual sciences, taking a high school course in one science didn't result in better college performance in the others.

Join Albuquerque Home Learners this fall for a weekly art classes for children ages 6-10 on Wednesdays from 10-11*, beginning on August 15th, at Heights Community Center, located near UNM. Some months will have five weeks of classes, and due to holidays some will have three weeks of classes. Parents will need to remain with their children during the class**. Activities will also be provided for younger siblings***. AHL classes are open to all homeschoolers.

Our teacher is Cassandra Gordon-Harris, a member of the National Association of Women Artists. She said, “Children will have the opportunity to experience various media such as watercolor pencils, markers, painting (tempera), charcoal and chalk and mixed media. The children will be shown examples, parameters set and then allowed to develop the subject matter according to their level of creativity and ability. The children will also work with scissors and glue to increase small motor skills. All projects are designed for student success so that the children's confidence levels can increase with each project thereby enhancing the development of their skill and understanding. We will work on two projects at a time, so it will take the child at least 2 or more classes to finish. While the children work, information will be given about the media they are working in as reflected in art and culture.”

Visit the following link to view art work completed by some of the teacher’s previous students who ranged in age from about 6-9. The work at this link includes chalk drawings, charcoal, tempura paints, water color and felt tip. There are some fun creations to view!

The monthly fee will depend on the total number of students in the class. We need a minimum of 10 students to make this a go. The most it will cost per student, per month is $22.50. The maximum class size is 15 students. If we get 15 students, it will be only $15 per child, per month.

This is a great weekly opportunity for kids to develop their creativity without requiring you to purchase supplies or clean up a mess!

If you would like your child/ren to participate, please request an enrollment form by email at adagioacademy@comcast.net. Openings will be filled on a first come/first served basis.

*On many Wednesdays additional classes will be offered, free of charge-other than expenses for consumable materials, following art class. We have use of the building until 1:30, and we will be providing additional fun learning opportunities.

**Albuquerque Home Learners has a “No Drop-off Policy” for all classes and events. Article: Schools Facing Tight Budget-IDEA-NM is being discontinued

http://www.ratonrange.com/main.asp?SectionID=2 hit the 'Local News in Audio' near the top of the page and click on the article to hear it! Here it is in print, sent to me by a fellow homeschooler! Enjoy, Tabbi

Schools facing tight budget

By Bob Morris
Staff writer, The Raton Range

The Raton school district will be on a tight budget for the upcoming school year, a situation the current interim superintendent believes is a result of several factors from past fiscal years.

Raton Public Schools interim Superintendent Paul Malano told the board at its Monday meeting that the district has been required by the state Public Education Department to place $540,000 of its state funding into an emergency fund to "cover a deficit for the past year." He told the board the situation is not just resulting from anything that happened this past year, but there "had been different things that should have been done in years past."

Malano told The Range that "we (in the district) probably haven't had a working knowledge of our budget for a number of years, and because of that, we have found out at this point that we have...a shortfall of monies."

He told The Range part of the reason was "definitely expenditures last year" but added, even in years prior to that, "we didn't have a clear picture of funds we had."

During the board meeting, Malano noted the district in recent years has experienced declining enrollment, and enrollment determines state funding amounts. He also said something that probably should have been considered in past years was, when a teacher submitted his or her retirement or resignation notice, the district determi ning "if we need to retain that position." He told The Range the district should have examined whether any staff openings could be covered "with existing staff without any additional hires. It's something we will have to look at in the future."

The $540,000 that has been placed into the emergency fund is money that the state Public Education Department has asked the district to "do our very best not to touch, so it will cover our shortfall this year, and hopefully will give us a little cash reserve next year," Malano said. The district's current fiscal year began July 1.

Malano told the board that four teaching positions that became vacant in the district, because of retirement or resignations, will be filled by teachers who worked for the district last year and had been given notice in May that they may not be retained. This means, Malano said, that while all current staff will be retained, there will be "four positions we had last year that we won't have this year." Those positions that have been eliminated include one at each of the elementary schools and one at Raton High School.

"We were able to move people into (other) positions," Malano said.

Additionally, Malano said he has asked school principals, teachers and coaches "to spend carefully" when they need to make any purchases.

Related to financial issues, a program that will be eliminated for the upcoming 2007-2008 school year is the Individual Distance Education Academy (IDEA). The board voted unanimously to discontinue the program, given concerns that had been voiced by state officials and the expenditures involved in running the program.

The board had considered the future of IDEA at its June meeting, but a motion to discontinue the program failed with three of the five board members voting against it. The future of the program was debated because of state Public Education Department concerns that Senate Bill 9, or two-mill levy, funds should not be used for technological purposes "for kids outside of a classroom," that there needed to be "internal controls" regarding accounting of funds to run the program, and that there was not enough "checks and balances in terms of curriculum and attendance" for the distance-education component.

At the meeting Monday, Malano recommended the IDEA program be discontinued. "I don't think we have much choice," Malano said.

Board member Stephanie Jansen, who said she was a "major supporter" of IDEA, agreed with Malano that "we don't have a choice" other than to discontinue the program. Jansen said, while she supports ending the IDEA program, she would favor working with whoever will be the new superintendent on "something similar" that falls within state guidelines.

"It's important to understand that it also brought in money" to the district, in terms of a way to increase district enrollment, Jansen said.

Malano told The Range that when former superintendent Bill Walz pursued the IDEA program, "there were hopes to be allowed to have more students than the 100 the state allowed." But because the Public Education Department had concerns with how the program was run, "they told us they would not fund it as it was last year" for the coming school year, Malano said.

During Monday's meeting, Malano mentioned a property on the corner of Fourth Street and Legion Drive, near Kearny Elementary School, that the district had purchased recently, which the district might want to consider selling.

The property, which has two houses and a garage, had been purchased with the intent of using it for staff parking at Kearny, with the buildings either demolished or moved. But, Malano said, after discussions with Kearny Principal Randy Hestand and Ian Harmon, who has prepared the facility master plan for the district, it was "probably not a feasible idea at this point" to use the land as a parking lot, and the board may want to consider the sale of the property, with the money generated to be used to address budget issues.

Periodically I've blogged on the grim fact that the Bush Administration has repeatedly hung its most faithful supporters out to dry. One of the most spectacular examples is the Forest Service's cynical effort to simultaneously sell out rural schools while selling off recreational lands used by rural communities. The last effort by Forest Service chief Mark Rey to link sales of land in the national forests to paltry one-time funding for rural schools sank like a stone with the Republicans in Congress.

Ages 4 and up will be in the gym without parental involvement (we can watch from the lobby) If children ages 2-3 would like to participate for the entire lesson they need to have a parent on the floor with them making sure they listen to the instructor and wait their turn. The lesson will begin with stretching and some basic tumbling. They will then split into groups and rotate through an obstacle course; bar, beams, trampoline with foam pit. The last 10-15 minutes will be free time. I need to know the ages of the children participating. Please let me know if your 2-3 year old will be participating or just joining in at the end. Subject: International Freedom in Education Day
Journée Internationale pour la Liberté de l'Instruction (JIPLI)
International Freedom in Education Day (IFED)

September 15th, 2007

Dear Home-educating Friends and Supporters of Freedom in Education,

An International Freedom in Education Day (IFED), an idea originating this year in France, is proposed for Saturday, September 15th, 2007.

The aim is to promote the idea of the importance of free choice in education, and to spread information about the alternative ways of learning that are available, or are being fought for in various countries.

The focus will be on Home Education, but we also welcome alternative and free schools to take part in this global event.

The interest is gathering in Europe and internationally. Events related to the IFED may take place throughout the month September, but on the 15th, we plan to have many events in different countries all over the world,
celebrating Freedom in Education.

One idea is to launch hundreds of balloons, carrying postcards with slogans promoting Freedom in Education. A logo and posters are being prepared and will soon be available.

In Paris, a giant picnic on the theme of home education is planned, preceded by a press conference on September 10th.

In London, a Home Education Fair is planned. For more details please contact: homeeducationfair@hotmail.com

In Vienna, an evening event on September 7th, will be dedicated for a discussion of Freedom in Education, and the practice of home education and unschooling.

During the week preceding or following September 15th, there will be a gathering in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. This gives a possibility to highlight the topic "Human Rights and Home Education".

French home educators are creating a website for the Freedom in Education Day. There we will publish all information and/or links to events on or around the 15th of September (conferences, gatherings, education fairs,
etc.), where ever they may take place and in whatever language, so please send us your projected events.

We will also post links to other websites and announcements in other countries. If your native language is not English, French, German, Italian or Spanish, please send us a short English description and in your native
language, of your event that you would like placed on the website.

So please tell us about your planned events, no matter how small it may seem! We'll be great in numbers!

Information: Yahoo to remove Bouncing Members

This was posted today on the Yahoo Groups Moderators Blog:

"If you've noticed a change in the total number of members in your
group, don't fret; we're cleaning up long time bouncing members. In
the first phase of this clean up we're removing just email-only
group members whose email addresses have been bouncing for more than
a year.

In the next phase of the clean up we'll focus on web-access members
whose emails have been bouncing for more than a year. If you have
members that fit this description encourage them to update their
membership with a valid email address.

Jami Heldt
Groups Community Manager"

"Bouncing," if you do not know, means that your email address with
which you are subscribed to a group is no longer valid, and that
emails sent by YG have returned as undeliverable. If you are
reading this, you are reading it on the web page, since YG has
stopped sending you email. Up to now, YG has not removed bouncing
addresses from groups, so that you still have been able to access
your group on the web using your Yahoo ID and password. That will
end soon. Unless you change your address to a valid one, YG will
remove you from your groups.

To add a valid email address go to http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups
and click on Email Preferences at the top right. Then click Add
Email Address at the top left. Follow the prompts. You will have
to respond to a verification email from YG at that address. Once
it's verified you can go back to MyGroups, click on Edit My Groups
and change your email address with any of your groups using the drop
down boxes. Don't forget to click Save Changes.

Hello,

My name is Lara Chartier and I home school our three children, Cameron (11), Donovan (9) and Carol (6).

We take many trips both local and across the states mostly in the name of educational pursuits. Traveling with a family can become very expensive, but we have been blessed with the ability to find other families that are willing to trade homes for a few days or even a week. This has allowed us to travel with relatively little expense.

It was during our trip in June from Kansas City , MO to Baltimore , MD my oldest son gave me an incredible idea to organize something I have been doing for years on a larger scale..... Exchange homes with fellow home schooling families to further the education of our children. You can see our children on the “About Us” page from that very trip.

We began HELM Travel (www.HELMTravel.com).

It is an acronym for Home Educated Learn More while Traveling.

We are organizing a pool of families that are looking to enrich their children’s education through hands-on learning experiences or just to take a trip to enjoy family time together. Home schooling families will exchange their primary residence, a second/vacation home, maybe even a timeshare that isn’t being used OR a your can choose to host another family in your home rather than exchanging during one, two or three pre-designated dates. You can even exchange in the spring and host in the fall.

Dates for 2008:

April 20th – 27th (Spring)

June 20th- 27th (Summer)

September 20th – 27th (Fall)

Home Exchange is a fantastic way to reduce travel costs, promote goodwill and develop long lasting friendships. This is your chance to create a trip of a lifetime, spend some time panning for gold in Coloma, discover the real story of the Pony Express in St. Joseph or learn about the Civil War in Atlanta . Big City or Small Town , there is opportunity at every corner.

Check our website www.HELMTravel.com to find out additional information.

Thank you very much for your time and attention.

This is a grassroots effort, so spread the word or in this case our web address. If you need flyers, just let me know, I can mail flyers or send a Word document. The more families that sign up, means the more choices of destinations for everyone.

Let’s Explore, Experience and Educate Together!

Sincerely,

Lara Chartier, Owner

Sent to AHL mail

HI! My name is Kristin Kessler and I'm a Christian homeschooling mama to two girls. I'm organizing an online Geography lesson! =)=) The idea is to get a home schooling family from each of the 50 states to commit to send a letter or postcard or drawing to a family in each of the other 49 states. Each family will both send out and receive 49 letters from around the country. We currently have 40 states represented but do not yet have a family from New Mexico. I was hoping you would have some families in your group who would be interested in participating. I'd be glad to give any more information your families need and so appreciate your time. All others could join http://groups.yahoo.com/group/homeschool_form_share/?yguid=147155064

Albuquerque: Spanish Camp anyone???

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Hello homeschool families and all,

I know this is a last minute notice, but if some of you are like me who find out great information to sign up our kids for good programs, we jump in and join.

I was recently, very recently, asked to facilitate this great Spanish Camp that starts tomorrow. I had a chance to view the materials and I strongly recomend it.

The camp is for three hours a day monday through Friday 1 to 4pm. The class includes songs, visuals, movement, dance, drama, art and much more. The three hours are filled with lots of fun and great vocabulary. I think it will be a great camp for those kids who have taken at least one or two spanish classes before. If you are interested in registering your child please call . When you call say that you are a homeschooler and you will receive a class discount. If you can't do it this time, there is always more classes offered by Spanish Champs.

thanks for sharing this infroamtion with the community.

Albuquerque: Fall Art Class

Please feel free to pass the following on to other homeschoolers:

There are some fun creations to view!

http://www.kodakgallery.com/ShareLandingSignin.jsp?Uc=v78ycob.5isrmhi7&Uy=mfgvg0&Upost_signin=Slideshow.jsp%3Fmode%3Dfromshare&Ux=0&UV=720532448636_679792354207

Thanks!

Parents are expected to remain with their children and to ensure that they and their children are supporting the teachers and/or guides by being attentive and polite. Where appropriate parents are also asked to assist children in activities and clean-up.
***Parents of younger siblings will be asked to take turns providing activities for the toddlers and preschoolers…playing games or doing any activities of your choosing.

Tabitha, here is the email about the choir on the west side. Some things may change, but I won't know that until Lara gets back from vacation. Do you mind sending it out again in a couple of weeks, just in case people haven't seen it the first time? I really appreciate your help in this. Thank you. I hope this looks okay the way it is. Any questions, call me at 514-0975.
Catherine Coss

WEST SIDE CHOIR OPPORTUNITY!

Does your son or daughter love to sing? Does he/she sing all the time? Do you want to nurture that interest? Do you wish there were a choir on the West Side because you're tired of driving to Albuquerque? We may have a solution for you!

INTRODUCING.....
Lara moore

Trained voice instructor

Lara is new in town and is seeking home school students, ages 8 and up, to form a West Side Choir. Boys and girls are all welcome. To express your interest, please contact Catherine Coss at 514-0975 or cacky10@bluebottle.com.

At this stage, the location and time are yet to be determined, but we are thinking about Monday afternoons, 1:30- 2:30. Please let Catherine know if you would prefer a Rio Rancho or Taylor Ranch location.

The price would be $30 to $35 a month, for one hour a week. Siblings would be $15.00! If you know of a great location in Rio Rancho that would be consistently available at the same time each week, please let Catherine know that as well.

Private lessons are also available at a very reasonable price. Lara has been teaching private voice for 3 years. See the following for references. Contact Lara about private lessons at apollos_crew@msn.com.

Here's what others have to say about Lara Moore:

Taking voice lessons with Lara Moore has been a wonderful experience for my three children, ages 8, 10, and 13. Lara is a warm, enthusiastic, and gifted teacher dedicated to sharing her love of music with her students in a positive and encouraging environment. My kids sing all the time now, I hardly ever have to remind them to practice at home because they enjoy it so much! I know that the kids look forward to their time with Lara and that they have more confidence in the ability to sing. The voice lessons with Lara have given my kids a better understanding of music in general, as well as a great new opportunity for self expression and creativity.

Julie Triplet, Fort Collins

Dear Lara,

On behalf of Allan and Sarah, I would like to thank you for the dedication and commitment you put into the voice lessons that Sarah was able to experience over the 15 months that you have worked with her. Her voice has developed so beautifully and I know she has valued the experience of working with you. We never have to "push" her to practice what she has learned at home; she enjoys practicing and singing even when she is at the computer! She particularly enjoys singing some of the more traditional hymns that you have exposed her to.

One of her most memorable accomplishments was her performance in her elementary school's talent show a year ago. Here was a child who, when starting Kindergarten was perceived as "not taking risks;" yet she ended her 5th grade year singing "Balm of Gilead" solo in front of 400 students!! I know that God gave her the confidence and potential gift, but it was your patience in working with her that gave her that desire to perform and try her very best. You will be missed! Best of ever and abundant blessings as Jeff and your family begin a new journey together!

Laura Ohert

To Whom It May Concern,

I would like to recommend Lara Moore as an outstanding voice teacher. She has taught our children the techniques of using their voice properly and they have found a love for singing. In particular, my son who is 12, started voice lessons with Lara a little less than a year ago and she took him from having no experience or training to singing in the local Stars of Tomorrow show. He would never have been able to do that if he had not had the kind of instruction that Lara gave him. She was able to take the natural abilities he had and bring them to a whole new level with the proper instruction.

In addition to having a beautiful voice herself, she has taught our kids how to find their own love for music. She has done a wonderful job and we will miss her patience and dedication to bringing out the best in our children.

Sincerely,

Carrie Flores

Article: Home-schoolers allowed one sport

This is a good article that explains homeschooler participation in sports in public schools. If you have experiences this year relating to this new law please write me and let me know good or bad so that we can pass the information on to other families!--Tabitha

Home-schoolers allowed one sport

Impact new law will have is unknown

Jason W. Brooks News-Bulletin Staff Writer; jbrooks@news-bulletin.com

A new law passed by the New Mexico Legislature in its 2007 regular session allows home-schooled athletes to participate in one sport per school year.

Senate bill 1098 permits home-schooled athletes to participate in "one school district athletic activity at the public school in the attendance zone in which the student resides," in accordance with New Mexico Activities Association guidelines, the bill states.

After a parent meeting for athletics held recently, former Belen High School athletic director Robert Chavez met briefly with the parents of a handful of home-schooled athletes. He informed them of the new law, as little legislation had previously addressed home-school participation in high school athletics.

"This doesn't hurt a kid who tries out for a team and doesn't make it," said Chavez. "Home-schooled parents and kids only need to choose a sport if they make the team."

The law also states it is a school district's responsibility to verify academic eligibility. A new edition of the New Mexico Activities Association handbook, posted on the Web site www.nmact.org, states eligibility "must be verified by the public school's athletic director at the same time all students are ruled eligible or ineligible for athletic participation."

A new group NM Homeschoolers Marketplace

Hi All,

I'm a homeschooler in Albuquerque - some of you know me.

I started a new Yahoo group so we could advertise our home
businesses. Sometimes our local groups don't like us to market but
it's nice to network with other homeschoolers.

I babysit, and I know other Moms and Dads who tutor, run family
restaurants or businesses, financial services, craft, etc. Just
wanted to give us all an outlet for our services.

Here's the new Yahoo group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nmhomeschoolersmarketplace/

Please come join to advertise your business of any type or to search
for services. It will be highly moderated by me.

Thanks, Carol - email me if you have any questions (rodier2006@msn.com)

Natl Park fee waivers for homeschooling families

From Ann Zeise at the A2Zhomeschool@yahoogroups.com

I don't usually post links to the Yahoo Group, but this one is so
timely, I just had to tell you:

Homeschool families and even small groups of homeschoolers can get fee
waivers to National Parks and Monuments, but you have to plan and
apply in advance.

This blog explains how....

The homeschool dad who is keeping this blog promises me he'll keep it
going with loads of ideas on how to make your trip to a national park
fun and educational.

Have any of you visited a National park this summer or plan to do so
soon? Let's exchange our adventures and plans.

We used to go to Yosemite in the fall with two other homeschool
families. The waterfalls were mostly dried up, but so were the crowds.
You can see the "gang" on my pages about Bodie, the ghost town we
visited not far from Yosemite one trip.

From the Gifted Homeschooler Yahoo Group, personal info removed:

Here are a few ideas for you.

(1) You can use iWeb on the Mac. The only thing is, your options are somewhat limited.
It's easy to get started, but pretty restricted in what you can do.

(2) Another really simple (and free) way to get started making a Web
site is to use something like "wikispaces" -- see

http://wikispaces.com

You can choose a username and password of your choice to set up an
account with wikispaces, and then you can create a new site. The
"free" site will have text advertising on the side of the page.

The instructions on how to create pages using Wikispaces are pretty
easy to follow. See

http://www.wikispaces.com/help+index

(3) There are quite a few places where you can set up a basic Web
site for free and use a template (a pre-setup Web page design) to do
it. This lets you get started fairly quickly.

Here's an example from Yahoo:

http://geocities.yahoo.com/

If you have a Yahoo ID you use with the [...] mailing list, the same
one would work with this.

(4) If you want to do "real," full, unlimited-possibilities Web
publishing, you would

(a) Buy "Web-editing" software -- the most popular, easy-to-use,
and full-featured is Dreamweaver (that's what I use). The
"educational" price (for students like yourself) at Academic
Superstore for Dreamweaver CS3 is $194.95 -- see

(b) Create your Web site using this completely open-ended software
(you can do anything with it).

(c) Find a place to "host" your Web site... this is a company that
has Web servers (computers with software that "serve" your pages to
visitors with Web browser software) connected to the Internet. There
are free (ad-supported) sites widely available. If you want a site
without ads, for $10 per month you can get lots of space. A company I
like to use is Dreamhost,

http://www.dreamhost.com/

(d) Once you've set up an account with such a company, you can
transfer the files you created on your computer, to a space on their
computer server.

As to how you would go about *learning* how to do any of these
options, it depends on which one. The first options I mentioned are
pretty simple, and you can just "play around with them" and look
through their online Help files to figure out how to use them. This
is a great way to get started... and then if you really like it, and
want to do more, you can proceed to the latter option, using
Dreamweaver and a hosting company.

If you do want to use Dreamweaver to do full Web publishing, the
online Help files that come with it are excellent. The "QuickStart"
books are great for learning programs like Dreamweaver, too, such as

The "Total Training" DVD for Dreamweaver is good too:

There are also some online courses I can recommend if you want to go
deeper than that and learn more, those from the HTML Writers Guild:
