Event: Concert by The Enchanters

Date & Time: Thursday, May 8, 2008, 6:30 – 7:45 p.m.

Location: Loma Colorado Main Library Auditorium

Admission: Free for all ages. Free tickets required.

Description: The Enchanters, a mixed choral group, will be performing at the Loma Colorado Main Library (Rio Rancho Public Library) on Thursday evening, May, from 6:30 – 7:45 pm. The 9 men and 8 women will sing a variety of songs, including jazz, gospel and showtunes.

For four decades, the talented group has been entertaining audiences. Their predecessor was The Bel Cantos, a group that was founded in the 1950’s by Norman Russell Bell. In the 1960s, its name was changed to The Enchanters. Although the selection of works performed by the Enchanters has evolved somewhat from that of the Bel Cantos, it is still is rooted in that choral tradition.

The ensemble’s roster has varied over the years, but several members have been singing with the chorus for many years. Not all the members perform at each concert; the ensemble on May 8 will consist of 4 basses, 3 tenors, 4 altos and 6 sopranos. Frank Johnson is the chorus’s current director and will provide the piano accompaniment for this concert.

To maintain a repertoire of songs and excellence in performance, the group has weekly 2 hour rehearsals during its active season, which is from early September to the end of May. The group does accept new members. Anyone wishing to audition can contact Marge Velasquez at (505) 892-0754.

DETAILS
1. Next school year needs 181 days of instruction
A fresh review of NM state statute and PED policy has revealed at least two areas where our information needed to be updated. This information was not presented at the convention, so please alert your support groups and your fellow home educators.

The last legislative session did increase the minimum number of school days for all districts by one day. While districts may provide more than the minimum, they may not provide less, and so the new minimum is at least 181 days.

Home schools are required by law to provide the same number of school days as their local district, so the new minimum for us is 181, and it would be a good idea to verify that with your local district as well.

The changes have not caught up with the PED website that informs home schoolers either, but we will update the CAPE website as quickly as possible.

The second change is that in the past, teacher in-service days were included with instructional days, and that is no longer the case. Instruction days are exclusive of in-service days.

All you need to do is plan for 181 or more instructional days in your 2008-2009 school year schedule, and keep a copy of that plan.

2. National Day of Prayer this Thursday, May 1, 2008.
This year’s theme comes from Psalm 28:7
"The Lord is my strength and shield;
My heart trusts in Him and I am helped."

In Santa Fe, one event will be in the Capitol Rotunda from 12 noon to 1:00.

Santa Fe pastor Glenn Strock reminds us all, “As a people our nation faces a future full of change and major social issues that will call for a firm foundation of prayer. Praise God that He inhabits the prayers of His people.”

If you can’t get to Santa Fe, most communities are also participating. Go to the National Day of Prayer Task Force website at www.ndptf.org for more information.

And, you can also make it a family day of prayer for the nation.

3. CAPE resource manual under revision
The CAPE-NM Resource Manual for Beginners and Veterans has been updated with inserts that reflect changes since the last printing. It is now undergoing a complete revision and will be republished before the end of the summer.
If you have always thought YOUR favorite curriculum or area of interest needs to be included, this is your chance to tell us! Please respond in the next two weeks. Suggested changes need to be made by May 10 to be considered.

4. Convention CDs are available
Miss the convention? Or maybe you attended and couldn’t figure out how to attend two or three workshops at once? Go to http://cape-nm.org/pages/capenm/convention/recordings.php
for CD and MP3 ordering information.

Homeschooler Discount Days to Walt Disney World, FL-Planning a Trip?

Hi Tabitha,

Thank you for offering to post my info for me. If you're sure you don't
mind, this is what I've been sending out:

=====================

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to spread the word about my Disney World trip this fall (Labor

Day week). Disney has finally confirmed they're offering free dining again
during the time we'll be there and we can start reserving the free dining
packages now. I'm trying to reach as many homeschoolers as possible so they
can take advantage of it before availability runs out. (They said that there
would be fewer packages this year.)

I'm located in South Carolina, but all homeschoolers are welcome to join us
on our trip. We're trying to get more older homeschoolers to join us this
year, if possible, so that we can reserve the higher level educational
programs (with more of a career and behind-the-scenes focus) in addition to
the elementary and middle school programs. We're not travel agents and don't
make a commission on rooms (as a matter of fact, all of our travelers choose
their own hotels and reserve themselves). We just want the opportunity to
enjoy more of the educational programs this year and need more older
homeschoolers to make the minimum for the programs.

Our tickets will be heavily discounted, and will include theme parks, water
parks, Disney Quest, and special educational programs. The free dining just
makes the deal even better!

For more information, please visit
http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/travelwdw.htm

To receive trip updates, join our Traveling Homeschoolers mailing list at
http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/lists.htm

Warmly,
Dianna

=====================

Thank you, again. I appreciate your time and hope someone in your group can
join us.

Warmly,
Dianna

HSers in the News! Natalie Chambers wins 2nd Place in the Reading Rainbow Contest!

Congratulations to Homeschooler

Natalie Chambers

who won 2nd Place

in the 3rd Grade Division of the Reading Rainbow Contest in Albuquerque.

The title of her book is "Mystery Girl".
The basic plot is about a girl who helps poor people. She is dressed in
such a way that others do not know who she is. There is a rich man which despises
her and a young girl who loves her and has a deep need to know 'who is mystery
girl?'. In the end the young girl finds out, through a tragedy, who
mystery girl is and knows that no one should ever know who she truly is in the end.

According to her mother, Kathy Chambers, Natalie is a self motivator. She has written stories since she was 5 years old. This was her third year to enter a story with Reading Rainbow.

Kathy is considering making copies and binding the illustrated story into a readable version that everyone can share with their own children. If you are interested please contact her at chambers33@usa.net.

Congratulations again on your fantastic achievement Natalie!

Edgewood: Summer Education and Work Opportunities for youth, age 14-25

Hello,

I'm writing to see if we can run an ad, or post something on your website concerning summer work opportunities for youth ages 14-25 at Wildlife West, in Edgewood, NM. Wildlife West is zoo and nature park that has been almost entirely built by youth! We hire 25-30 youth each summer to help with construction and educational projects. The youth are involved with habitat construction and maintenance, giving tours of the park, special events, and many other fun and education experiences. The program is hiring now (please send in a resume), and runs through mid-September. We are accepting resumes now and will be hiring through the end of May.

Thank you, I appreciate any help you can give us. We would love to have more homeschoolers, and motivated, interested youth on our team!
Thanks for your help,

Renee Hoffman (homeschooler, and soon a college graduate!)

Article: ScientificAmerican.com: Six Things in Expelled That Ben Stein Doesn't Want You to Know...

Hi all! I wanted to send this article because I have talked to a lot of people (homeschoolers) who plan on seeing this movie. I kind of find it disturbing that someone would try to make excuses for the Holocaust and the actions those in charge--ok but I have not seen this movie so I can not speak to it until I see it which most likely will not be till it comes out on Netflix. But what bothers me in todays age of documovies the deception in which they are presented, both that they misquoted from an already controversial book (Darwin's The Origin of Species-which I have read, yes cover to cover I am a geek) and that they misrepresented themselves when interviewing the scientists. Personally, I would have liked to seen a movie about the intersection of science and religion because I was in anthropology in college and we had many wonderful debates by very religious students and faculty about that subject. Sigh but apparently it is impossible to not only to tell the truth any more but these people obviously crave sensationalism and just want to sell tickets. Maybe we all have this wrong maybe this is supposed to be a joke, Ben Stein is a comedian right? I say we all go back to making more Jane Austen movies! Have fun homeschooling!--Tabbi

I'm writing regarding a free puzzler service for your fellow New Mexico Science Teacher Association members. The National Science Teachers Association has posted links to our puzzler services on NSTA.org, and we exhibited at the NSTA National Conference in St. Louis where 450 teachers lined up to sign up for our free puzzlers.

The teacher feedback has been wonderful, and many teachers suggested that we contact the individual organizations, because you have more grass-roots power to reach other teachers and may want to make them aware of our service.

Our company publishes the 27-time award winning "Cogno" science games and books (www.cogno.com). We provide free weekly science and multi-subject puzzlers by email, for grades 3-8. The puzzlers inspire critical thinking and learning in astronomy, forces & motion, and life sciences.

Each week, teachers receive an e-mail with new 1-page puzzlers, ready to be photocopied for students. An answer key is included, so no specialized expertise or extra work is required by the teacher. For information, examples, or to sign up for free Cogno puzzlers, see www.cogno.com/puzzlers.

Note: Cogno's Challenge science content was expert-reviewed by scientists at NASA and the SETI Institute.

Would you please consider posting the following paragraph in your newsletter or website, or emailing it to your members?

Free Weekly Science Puzzlers: Each week, share with your students a FREE thought-provoking science puzzler, drawn from the award-winning Cogno science board games. You'll receive a weekly e-mail with a fully illustrated one-page puzzler about astronomy, forces & motion and/or life sciences, ready to be photocopied for students. The e-mail message includes the answer and explanation, allowing you to facilitate as much or as little discussion as you like. Recommended for grades 3-8. For information, samples, and to register, see www.cogno.com/puzzlers.

Why free? Cogno's mission is to "inspire children to think critically and imaginatively." This mission is at the root of every effort we make, and these puzzlers are part of our effort to further our mission and help raise awareness for Cogno.

Thanks so much!

Albuquerque: Popejoy Schooltime Series Special News

Schooltime Calendar Drawing Contest Deadline is April 28th!

Dear Tabitha Orr,

It's not too late. Don't miss out on your opportunity to submit drawings to our annual calendar contest of this year's Schooltime shows. You can submit as many times as you wish. An entire class may be mailed in one envelope.

We invite your students to draw a picture of either of the following topics:

How I feel when I attend a show at Popejoy Hall
A "Thank you" drawing

It can be for any show they have seen in the Popejoy Schooltime Series but cannot be for the NMSO 4th or 5th grade concerts.

They may use any medium on an 8.5" X 11" piece of paper formatted horizontally.

On the back of each drawing we need written very legibly:

Teacher's Name, school, email address and phone number
School and Grade
Artist's Name
A very brief description (one sentence) of what their drawing expresses or means to them. It can be as simple as "I love Popejoy" or "It made me laugh and laugh", "I learned people in other cultures are just like me and that feels good", etc. Make sure the writing does not bleed through the drawing. You may put it on a separate piece of paper or label.
Please provide a return address on the envelope

We will select 14 winning drawings from this season's entrants to go into next season's Popejoy Hall calendar. These student winners will each receive four (4) tickets to a Popejoy Presents show in 08-09 and a copy of the calendar. We will also select Honorable Mention drawings and quotes.

Teachers/Educators whose classroom participates will go into a drawing for a pair of tickets to their choice of two shows selected from next season and every class gets a certificate.

PLEASE DO NOT FOLD THE PICTURES OR WE CANNOT USE THEM.

We hope this sounds like fun and it fits into the Fine Arts/Visual Arts and Language Arts/Expressive Language Writing Standards and Benchmarks too.

Thank you to all of you who have already sent in your masterpieces.

Read ME! LIFE Launches Tapestry of Homeschooling Survey-Please respond!

Information via LIFE of Florida homepage: http://lifeofflorida.blogspot.com/
Learning is for Everyone, Inc homepage & Forums: http://www.Learningis4everyone.org

We're hosting the Tapestry of Homeschool survey:
http://s-akxqb-40779.sgizmo.com/
in an effort to counteract the modern day mythology of homeschooling.
There are a lot of opinions out there about what homeschoolers want,
who homeschoolers are, and how homeschoolers teach and learn.
Unfortunately, many of those opinions come from people who don't
homeschool, or have a particular interest in portraying homeschoolers
a certain way.
Learning is for Everyone thinks it's time homeschoolers spoke for
themselves, instead of for government statistical surveys, or for the
private agendas of special interest groups. Tapestry of Homeschool
was put together by homeschoolers, for homeschoolers. Nearly 100
home educators from eight states provided input and suggestions for
this survey.
Homeschoolers comprise a diverse and multifaceted community. Getting
a better picture of who we are can help us support one another
better, as well as better protect our collective right to direct our
children's learning.
Results of this survey will be publicly available, but not publicly
broadcast. No personal information will be collected, nor will any
information be sold or used for commercial purposes by Learning is
for Everyone, Inc.
Hard (paper) copies of the survey are available on request for
distribution at a local level by local and state homeschool groups.
You may return the surveys to us (email info@learningis4eve ryone.org
for address) for inclusion in final results, or use them to get a
better understanding of homeschooling in your area.
The survey is long -- there are 80 questions -- but many are optional
fill-ins. And we're asking questions others looking at homeschooling
haven't been asking, about things we think will provide a far more
accurate look at who we are and what's important to us. It'll remain
online through the summer.
I hope you'll add your threads to the Tapestry of Homeschool, and
encourage others to, as well. Email info @learningis4everyon e.org if
you have questions or thoughts.

Hi Tabitha,

That’s great, what I will do is add you to our email newsletter list! I just thought I would attach the Robyn Scott flyer with a little more detail about the event. I also thought I would mention that Bookworks does offer a 10% educator’s discount, please don’t hesitate to let your at home educators know that they may take advantage of this discount!

Dear Tabitha,

I received an e-mail with your event flier in it, sounds like a great event! I also have an event lined up that I thought the New Mexico Home School Community would love to attend, we are pleased to be hosting author Robyn Scott here at Bookworks at 7pm Tuesday, April 22 for a talk and signing.

Scott is 27 and a graduate of Cambridge University who, like the children and families your organization supports, was home schooled! Scott was raised in Botswana, where her mother home schooled her and her two siblings. Twenty Chickens for a Saddle: The story of an African Childhood is the name of her memoir and it discusses how her mother home schooled the three girls, her education philosophy, Scott's own experiences, and the results—Scott went on to graduate from Cambridge with a masters degree in Bioscience Enterprise and helped to establish a charitable foundation for AIDS orphans!

If you feel like this wonderful, free event is one you would like to share with the New Mexico Home School Community I would be happy to forward a flier to you, or perhaps drop some off for distribution.

Albuquerque: Wonderful Percussion Teacher

Tabbi,

Would you mind posting this to the group?

Anyone looking for a really talented and professional drum instructor may want to contact Sharon Eldridge at 505-898-7944. My oldest son began working with Sharon at the Jazz Ensemble program through the Outpost Performance Space over by UNM. He fell in love with percussion and began drum lessons with her in August. Sharon has been so patient, mindful and supportive of his efforts that he has really shown an incredible amount of progression and enthusiasm for the instrument. My younger son began lessons with her in January and is also loving it. I truly can not say enough about Sharon and her style of teaching. I used to play the drums as a young adult and in the three years or so that I played I never reached the level that my ten year old son has in less than a year. Now that could potentially mean that I stunk, but I prefer to think that it is because of her instruction and ability to inspire. Check her out, she has a nice studio for teaching both in the center of town and, I believe, on the West side.

Carbon Tip of the Day
Start an Anti-Idling Campaign
Curb greenhouse gas emissions in your school parking lot by starting
an anti-idling campaign in your school or district. The average
school bus burns half a gallon of fuel per hour when idling, emitting
11.1 pounds of carbon and costing school districts money. Diesel and
gasoline exhaust also poses a health hazard for teachers and
students, particularly those with asthma. Encourage your students to
ask their parents to turn off their cars when waiting for them after
school, and follow the EPA's tips for starting an anti-idling
campaign: http://epa.gov/ cleanschoolbus/ antiidling. htm

City of Santa Fe Sponsors More Free Self-Defense Classes

City of Santa Fe Sponsors More Free Self-Defense Classes

The City of Santa Fe has signed a new contract with IMPACT Personal Safety to provide additional self-defense classes to the public. The new contract covers five three-hour classes, including two for English speakers, two for Spanish speakers and one for residents age 55 and older. This is the first time that the Spanish language classes have been offered to the general public.

These classes are free and space is limited. One of the classes for English speakers has already been held; participants were selected from a waiting list of more than 300 people which was developed the last time the city sponsored self–defense classes with IMPACT. The other classes are scheduled to be held on the dates that follow:

• April 26 (for English speakers) 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
• May 17 (for those 55 and older) 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
• May 24 (for Spanish speakers) 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
• June 11 (for Spanish speakers) 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Additionally, IMPACT Personal Safety plans to offer classes for city employees this summer.

The city first signed a contract with IMPACT Personal Safety last year following a sudden increase in sexual assaults. Out of concern for the safety of constituents, City Councilors Patti Bushee, Rebecca Wurzburger and then Councilor Karen Heldmeyer, led the effort to approve a City sponsored free self-defense course to be led by the nonprofit agency IMPACT Personal Safety. IMPACT Personal Safety teaches self-defense techniques to men, women and children of all ages that are fast, effective and proven.

The basic PREPARE 3-hour self-defense course offers a wide range of personal safety skills including awareness and avoidance skills, verbal strategies and physical techniques. Physical skills are practiced full-force against fully padded instructors trained in re-creating common assault situations.

Scott was raised in Botswana, where her mother home schooled her and her two siblings. Twenty Chickens for a Saddle: The story of an African Childhood is the name of her memoir and it discusses how her mother home schooled the three girls, her education philosophy, Scott’s own experiences, and the results—Scott went on to graduate from Cambridge with a masters degree in Bioscience Enterprise and helped to establish a charitable foundation for AIDS orphans!

If you feel like this wonderful, free event is one you would like to share with the New Mexico Home School Community I would be happy to forward a flier to you, or perhaps drop some off for distribution.

Thanks and best,

Cein Cunningham

RELEASE: IMMEDIATELY, PLEASE

SUMMARY: ALBUQUERQUE BIOPARK CELEBRATES EARTH DAY WITH A PARTY FOR THE PLANET ON SATURDAY, APRIL 19

In concert with zoos and aquariums across the nation, the Albuquerque Biological Park will celebrate Earth Day in a BIG way with a Party for the Planet on Saturday, April 19, from 10:00am-2:00pm. Visitors to each of the BioPark’s facilities – Zoo, Aquarium, Botanic Garden and Tingley Beach – will learn how to lessen their impact on the Earth and protect animals, plants and habitats.

At each facility, Celebra la Ciencia stations will feature family-focused, hands-on science activities taught by bilingual instructors. All Earth Day activities are included with regular admission.

At the Zoo, visitors will learn about endangered animals from around the world and how to protect them. Children can celebrate the “Year of the Frog” as they learn to identify frog calls and study tadpoles. The New Mexico Solar Energy Association will install a photovoltaic panel on the Zoo’s gift shop during the event and will provide information about solar energy.

At the Aquarium, visitors will follow a drop of water from the Rio Grande to the sea as they learn about amazing aquatic animals and how to protect marine ecosystems. Children will be able to make their own “mini-aquarium” to take home (while supplies last).

At the Botanic Garden, visitors will learn about plants for water-wise gardens and will be able to plant seeds to take home for their own garden. Local landscape architects will compete in a chalk art competition in the Aquarium/Botanic Garden plaza and will install temporary xeric landscapes near the parking lot.

At Tingley Beach, the BioVan will showcase plants and animals found along the Rio Grande. Guided wildlife-watching hikes through the nearby bosque will take place at 11:00am, 12:00pm and 1:00pm. Fishing lessons and pond life studies will take place at the Tingley Beach fishing lakes.

Celebra la Ciencia is a coalition of local science education institutions dedicated to engaging families in informal, hands-on science programs and increasing awareness about science career opportunities.

Speech by Astronomer Clifford Stoll

I must say that this man is pretty amazing all around--check out his books! Thought you all might enjoy this and be sure to check out his website and more information on the group that brought you his speech! Have fun learning!--Tabbi
____________________________________________________________________________

About this Talk
Clifford Stoll could talk about the atmosphere of Jupiter. Or hunting KGB hackers. Or Klein bottles, computers in classrooms, the future. But he's not going to. Which is fine, because it would be criminal to confine a man with interests as multifarious as Stoll's to give a talk on any one topic. Instead, he simply captivates his audience with a wildly energetic sprinkling of anecdotes, observations, asides -- and even a science experiment. After all, by his own definition, he's a scientist: "Once I do something, I want to do something else."

Why you should listen to him:
When Clifford Stoll speaks, you can't help but listen. Full of restless energy, he jumps from one topic to the next, darting back and forth across the stage. You may not be sure where he’s going, but the ride is always part of the adventure.

An astronomer (though his astronomy career took a turn when he noticed a bookkeeping error that ultimately led him to track down a notorious hacker), researcher and internationally recognized computer security expert -- who happens to be a vocal critic of technology -- Stoll makes a sharp, witty case for keeping computers out of the classroom. Currently teaching college-level physics to eighth graders at a local school, he stays busy in his spare time building Klein bottles.

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

The annual conference now brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).

This site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public, for free. More than 200 talks from our archive are now available, with more added each week. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.
