4/30/07- Roseanne Barr's Radio Show

No kidding this was a very pro-homeschooling show topic..apparently she is homeschooling her 11yr old son since beginning of last school year. Her guest was David Albert of www.skylarksings.com a very great person. Here is the email that he sent to AtoZHomeschool@yahoogroups.com:

My wife says it went very well. It was fun trying to get a word in edgewise.

http://yardtv.gotdns.com/kcaa-podcasts/roseanne/

The podcast isn't up yet.

They tried to find "an opponent" for me, but apparently they all begged
off. (I didn't know I was that scary!)

Piano for sale

Hi Tabbi,

Rose Thomas here. I met a man who has a 45-50 year old Wurlitzer piano for sale. It is a spinet and a cream color. He is asking $800, but will take $700. He is selling the piano because no one plays it in the house anymore and he needs the space. I saw the piano. It is in beautiful shape. It is very heavy and needs to be moved by a professional piano mover. It will also need to be tuned after it is moved. I know a very good piano tuner as well. We have had our piano moved several times by a piano mover here in Albuquerque. He is very good and not very expensive. He moves the pianos for the symphony and the Santa Fe Opera. So the person moving the piano would have to pay for the piano to be moved as well. It is a great piano for a beginner or intermediate to early advanced piano student. We have one identical to it that I learned on and my kids are learning on now. I told him that I would circulate this to the homeschool community and for them to get in touch with me through e-mail so he's not getting all these calls. My e-mail is rlopezthomas@msn.com for anyone who is interested and has more questions. Thanks, Rose

RSVP on this list or to me at NMHomeschoolCommunityUpdates@gmail.com DO NOT CALL THE STORE!! RSVPs required by next Friday, May 4th so that she can have the appropriate amount of supplies for us!

The last 'herb class' was hands down one of the best ones we had been on in some time, great store, great teacher, great kids beautiful yummy plants what more can you ask for? So come and have fun growing with us!

Let me know if there is an interest in doing this if not no big deal! But it would be really fun to have regular gardening sessions there at the Nursery!

Hello,

Vivian Herrmann (vamfam@comcast.net) has recommended the following news to you from LifeSiteNews.com:

German Homeschooler Melissa Busekros Home with Family after 3 Month Ordeal

By Peter J. Smith

ERLANGEN, Germany, April 23, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – German homeschooler Melissa Busekros finally returned home early this morning on her 16th birthday after having been forcibly separated from her family by the government 3 months ago.

Back in February, Melissa was seized from her family home in a dramatic police raid for the crime of home schooling – illegal since 1937 by edict of Nazi Chancellor Adolf Hitler – and placed with a foster home in a location unknown to her family...

He was the greatest scientist of his day, perhaps of all time. But
while Isaac Newton was busy discovering the universal law of
gravitation, he was also searching out hidden meanings in the Bible
and pursuing the covert art of alchemy. In this program, NOVA
explores the strange and complex mind of Isaac Newton. Using
docudrama scenes starring Scott Handy (Masterpiece Theatre's Henry
VIII) as Newton, we recreate the unique climate of late 17th-century
England, where a newfound fascination with science and mathematics
coexisted with extreme views on religious doctrine. Newton shared
both obsessions.

Free Indian Costumes

Hey Tabitha,

Would you pass this on please?

FREE to a good home!!

Northwest Coast Indian costumes.

Great for a KONOS coop doing the unit on
American Indians (Volume 1 I think). Or any group or individuals studying the Northwest Coast Indians.

They are elaborate, hand made blue felt with red trim. They are edged in sea shells. They have Northwest Coastal Indian designs on them. They include a cape, skirt, leggings and hat ( I think that is all) for 2 adults, a girl around size 8-10, and a girl or boy around size 4. You might be able to split the costumes up between more people if some wear capes and some only skirts.

I will check what I have and the sizes more carefully if you are interested. Email me at dianaturner1@comcast.net

Ph.D. Student Needing Home School Survey

To home schoolers and home school organizations:

My name is Cheryl Lanza, and I am a Ph.D. candidate through Breyer
State University, pursuing the Ph.D. in Education and Curriculum. I
am in the process of researching home schooling. Specifically, I am
looking at misconceptions that home schoolers and public educators
have about each other and determining if there is more common ground
than most people think. My mentor is Dr. Katie Moran who, herself, is
a home schooler and who has been very informative about home
schooling and gracious with her time and insights.

In order to accomplish my goals, I am asking that you take 15-20
minutes of your time in order to answer some of the following
questions about home schooling. Your input is both vital and very
much appreciated. I will not use any names in my dissertation unless
you specifically request that your name is included. I attained your
name or the name of your group through several home schooling manuals
and websites. Many of you are experts in the field of home education
or are a part of a group that, in some important way, contributes to
the home schooling community. If you are a part of a group, I would
request that you might pass along this survey to your members.

Your insights and responses are particularly important! Thank you so
much for your time and consideration. If you have any questions of
me, I shall be happy to answer them. My e-mail address is

Hey, Mozart! NM Selects Composers

The original melodies of 16 young composers have been selected for the 2007 Hey, Mozart! New Mexico compact disc recording and will perform their compositions on September 7, 2007 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque.

Pre-teens from across the state submitted 106 original melodies they composed for the second year of the project. This year the quality of the submissions was so high that an Honorable Mention category was created, according to David Felberg, the Hey, Mozart! New Mexico music director. The project is a partnership with Hartwick College in New York where composer-conductor Alejandro Rutty developed the annual event.

The Greater Albuquerque area provided a number of selected composers including Jocelyn Boyack, 6; Stephanie Brener, 11; Dylan Cuellar, 10; Angela Jerkins, 11; Simon Laird, 11; Maia Scarpetta, 12; Tankred Steinbach, 9; and Maya Vansuch, 11, of Albuquerque; Benjamin Harris, 13, Bosque Farms; Christopher Musson, 12, Rio Rancho; John Paul Norman, 11, Corrales; and Ian Kingsolver, 9, Placitas.

From the northern part of the state came melodies composed by Sierra Stackhouse, 13, Aztec, and Sophia Wickert, 11, Las Vegas. Quintin Dean, 12, and Phillip Miller, 11, both of Las Cruces, complete the Hey, Mozart! New Mexico composer list.

The composers will be recognized at an awards ceremony and free public concert on Friday, September 7, 2007, at the Journal Theater of the Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Each child will perform his or her melody after which members of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra will play the orchestrated version. The 2007 CD of the arranged versions of their melodies will be released at the free reception in honor of the young composers following the concert.

“As I listened to all of the children's melodies, I couldn't help but feel proud of the incredibly inventive music that was coming from them,“ said Felberg. “This is intergenerational music making. The compositions of the 16 children will be arranged for full orchestra by a team of experienced musicians including Katie Harlow, Eric Walters and me from New Mexico and other musicians in New York under the direction of Alejandro Rutty, artistic director and developer of the project. The children partner with us and see where their efforts could go in the future.” The orchestrated versions of the New Mexico kids’ original compositions will be recorded to CD by the Hey, Mozart! Orchestra under the direction of Felberg, who is also the associate concertmaster of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.

Honorable mention for their compositions went to Amalia Zeitlin, 11; Andrew Scott McLaughlin, 10; Tiffani Montoya, 9; Susana Navarro, 10; and Jazmine Quintela, 7, of Las Cruces; Toby Mueller, 9, Tijeras; Tanner Boyack, 8; Juliana Runnels, 12; Sage Sarason, 11; Abigail Schneebeck, 10; and Emma Stevens, 10, Albuquerque.

Hey, Mozart! New Mexico is looking for opportunities to present the children in their local communities as well. The Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra will feature area winners in a local concert.

“We are so fortunate to partner again for our second year with the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, and the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra, all of whom are making terrific contributions to children across our state,” stated Brookes McIntyre, President of Hey, Mozart! A grant from ASCAP is also allowing us to have some school performances with selected composers and NMSO musicians.

For further information on the Hey, Mozart New Mexico! project visit our website www.heymozartnm.org.

Webresource: Online Spanish, German and Calculus from Oklahoma State University

Dear Home School Parent or Association;
If you want your child to get high-quality instruction, have new learning opportunities by using existing technology, all at a low cost to you, then check out what Oklahoma State University has to offer at http://k12.okstate.edu/
We have an excellent track record – for the last 23 years we have successfully taught thousands of high school students through distance learning, first via satellite TV and the last 6 years via the Internet. During this time we have seen a lot of programs by other providers come and go – we are still here because we poured our heart and soul into these programs and we learned from our experience. We listened to our parents, teachers and students to create the most user-friendly courses available today.
We have delivered courses to more than 20,000 students in all 50 states and to American high schools overseas. Currently, we have about 1,000 high school students taking our courses. Here are the courses we offer and some comments from parents and educators:
AP Calculus AB & BC with Dr. James Choike
"I am so glad that my son has this option through the net. Possibly no student from his school has ever taken AP Calculus BC before..... Taking this course online has also taught him to be a self-starter and to manage his time well - a great preparation for college.”
Mr. Chandrasekhar, Parent, Kokomo, IN
AP German & German I – IV with Sabine Lewis and David Nagle
"One of my prime indicators of a good distance learning course is positive student feedback. …What could be a better indicator than 100% of level II students asking for a third year of German study....I am always eager to tell everyone I speak to that yours is probably the very finest conversational language program for high school students in the United States."
Robert Mackall, Distance Learning Coordinator
Cape Hatteras High School, Cape Hatteras, NC
Spanish I –II with Stephanie Coca
“Great course ... one of the best I have facilitated in the course of over a decade of distance learning facilitating. Workbook and homework assignments a little much sometimes, but overall workload appropriate. Great delivery and instructional staff and tutors, experts in their field with a knack for bringing themselves ‘into our classroom.’ Would highly recommend this course to any.”
Betty Byrum, Online Distance Learning Facilitator
Perquimans County High School, Hertford, NC
Our courses offer the convenience of Internet learning and the added value of toll free access to our instructors for assistance and tutoring. In addition, our courses are competitively priced at an average of $389 per student per course for the first 10 students and $150 for each additional student.
I invite you to review our website http://k12.okstate.edu/ for complete information about the program and the courses we can deliver to you and your students.
Please let me know if you have any questions about our courses. I look forward to hearing from you.

Resource: Wintersown.Org

Wintersown.Org is a not-for-profit educational corporation registered in New York State, USA. Wintersown.Org is dedicated to teaching the Winter Sowing Method to all who wish to learn an easy, simple and successful method to germinate seeds. Wintersown.org recognizes that there are many different ways to germinate seeds. Information contained in this site poses an alternate method employing things you have around the house, and is based on best practices gathered from Extension publications and other published sources along with experience derived from individuals. The information contained in this site is considered educational. The information and discussions are relatively informal to make the site more user-friendly.

The Winter Sowing Method is not only about starting thousands and thousands of seedlings for pennies - it is also about fostering creativity, uplifting spirits and stimulating success in all the things you do. Putting our hopes into a flat of seeds placed outside in the winter to germinate in spring teaches us to have both faith and patience. Upon seeing the germination our faith is rewarded and we feel exhilarant … we want to do the "happy dance" or "jump for joy". These two expressions best describe the combined actions of the naturally released hormones which surge through our minds when we experience great emotions. Wintersown.org wants to get your adrenaline going and find joy in a simple and low-cost winter sowing project!

Some folks say they get such a “high” on their success, that they have become addicted to starting these little plants. Many folks report that the satisfaction of seeing these little plants grow builds self-confidence … Children may study a bit harder to do better on an important test, or clean up their rooms before being scolded about it, or take care of a pet before being asked, etc. … Adults may finish a book, or sign up for adult-education courses, or sit down with the boss and have a win-win conversation!

WinterSown is a small and growing educational corporation, with your help and support, your sharing the method by "word of mouth" or "show and tell", the Winter Sowing Method can expand to help others through knowledge, friendship and sharing.

Thank you for your support,

Trudi Davidoff, President
WinterSown Educational Organization

General Info: Copyright for Homeschoolers

Copyright for Homeschoolers
http://www.homeschoolcopyright.com/

The Internet and computers have made sharing intellectual property much
easier. The tendency among tightly budgeted homeschoolers is to seek as
much free material as possible. The trick is to do so without crossing
the copyright line. We read headlines from time to time about the
continued wrangling over copyright especially in terms of music files.
If lawyers can't agree on what's legal, how are the rest of us to
figure it out?

Educators have their own set of unique rules to follow called
educational fair use. Much of today's problematic copyright abuse in
the educational market is due to misunderstanding of educational fair
use. We invite you to explore our section on educational fair use. The
information posted there will help you determine what you can and
cannot do.

Mission

Language barriers have never been more pronounced. Whether in an urban area of a modern country (e.g. the Chicago Public School system has 73 different languages represented in its student population) or the rural areas of a less developed country (e.g. Mongolia, where the ICDL has its first "branch" and where rural schools do not yet support a culture of reading for pleasure), differences in language are making it harder and harder for educational initiatives to bring about success.

As families move from Kenya to Finland or Brazil to Mexico or Viet Nam to California, books published in their native country or in their first language often must be left behind. In their new homelands, it may be difficult, if not impossible, to find children's books from their cultures and in their mother tongue. Parents have little access to the books and stories from their youth to pass on to the next generation. Many children must grow up without knowledge of their family's heritage and first language. A fundamental principle of the Foundation is that children and their families deserve to have access to the books of their culture, as well as the majority culture, regardless of where they live. According to a paper published in 2005 by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in preparation for the second meeting on the World Summit on the Information Society, "Denial to access to information in one's mother tongue is equivalent to a denial of a human right." The report also concludes, "In terms of pedagogy, how do children learn best? In their mother tongue."

The ICDL Foundation's goal is to build a collection of books that represents outstanding historical and contemporary books from throughout the world. Ultimately, the Foundation aspires to have every culture and language represented so that every child can know and appreciate the riches of children's literature from the world community.

The Albuquerque Songwriter's Series Continues To Explore the Craft

City Music Office Hosts Monthly Sessions First Thursday of Each Month.

Next Session: MAY 3, 2007 at Ben Michael's Restaurant

The Albuquerque Songwriter Series is a monthly event exploring the craft of songwriting with a changing lineup featuring the area's best songwriters. Each month the featured songwriters join each other on stage to take turns playing original songs, talk about their origins, how they came to write them, their influences and challenges. Songs range from completed pieces to works in progress. The series is presented by the City of Albuquerque Music Office, part of the Economic Development Department.

The next session takes place MAY 3beginning at 7:00 PM. Admission is free.

MAY featured songwriters include:

CHRIS DRACUP

MARK LEWIS

JENNIFER MARLOW

The Albuquerque Songwriter Series is hosted each month by songwriter and musician Roberto Martinez, Jr., who among other music projects performs with New Mexico's legendary traditional band Los Reyes de Albuquerque. Mr. Martinez is also a member of the Mayor's Albuquerque Music Advisory Board (AMAB). James de Champlon, also a member of the AMAB and a partner in local record label Little Kiss Records, coordinates the monthly series with City Music Liaison Tom Frouge.

"This series is not about performance, nor is it about perfect voices or playing." says Mr. Frouge. "It is about the art of song craft, and is not an open mic presentation. The stripped down setting, whether the songs are rock, rap, jazz, classical, folk, world, Latin or country, will showcase the compositions presented as they were written, on a single instrument. It will allow the Albuquerque songwriting community the opportunity to display their wares to other songwriters perhaps learn from one another and, hopefully help nourish that part of the music business in Albuquerque. It will also allow the community at large to get to know these artists through their songs."

Ben Michael's Restaurant is located at 2404 Pueblo Bonitio NW, Albuquerque (directly off Rio Grande across from Hotel Albuquerque and The Q Bar) 505-224-2817

For more information on the series and the possibility of participation please contact Tom Frouge, Music Liaison, City of Albuquerque Economic Development Department, Mayor's Office at 505-771-3166 or tfrouge@cabq.gov

Duke City Chorus to host ShowFest! 2007

Albuquerque, N.M. -- The Duke City Chorus (DCC) will host ShowFest 2007, a

competition of 13 show choirs representing high schools primarily from the

greater Albuquerque metropolitan area, on Friday April 20. The festival will be

held in the Kiva Auditorium in the Albuquerque Convention Center, with

preliminaries from 8:30am – 5:30pm and finals from 7:30-10pm. We anticipate

over 300 high school students will participate in the competition. Admission is $5

for each event (prelims and finals) or $8 for the entire day.

As a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the Duke City Chorus has the

vision to "lead the cause of encouraging vocal music in our schools and

communities." To this end, the members of the DCC organize youth outreach

activities such as ShowFest as a service to our younger generation, our schools,

and our community.

For more information, see our web page ( http://dukecitychorus.com) and follow

the "Youth Outreach" link.

Local author/illustrator Neecy Twinem has developed her Beasties series of board books to showcase her favorite animals-- shown eating, sleeping, being noisy and playing, each in its own natural habitat. The same textured acrylic technique that was used on Neecys award-winning E Is For Enchantment gives bright color and excitement to these durable board books for kids ages 0-3. Neecy will be leading a simple animal craft session for kids attending. (NorthWord Press)

With summer vacation just around the corner, the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Library System is gearing up for the 2007 Summer Reading Program, which runs from May 18 to July 20. ]During this free 9 week program, children, teens and adults are encouraged to register, read and attend any of the programs that the libraries offer. As an incentive to read for fun during the summer, children and teens collect a prize for every hour they read. For every 10 hours of reading all participants can also enter their name into a raffle for additional prizes. Throughout the summer, participating libraries will feature free entertainment by magicians, musicians and storytellers.

This year, the Library is offering additional programs and entertainment for teens, including movie nights and live music. The Library is also looking for great teen volunteers to help out during the summer with registration, prize giveaways and other activities. If you’re a teen that’s interested in becoming a Summer Reading Program Volunteer, visit your local library or call (505) 768-5136.

Join the Library for the Summer Reading Program Kick-Off Party on May 19 at the Alamosa Community Center from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The kick-off party will feature free entertainment and activities, and everyone can sign up for Summer Reading!

For additional information about the Summer Reading Program, including the entertainment lineup and kick-off party details, visit the library website at www.cabq.gov/library or call 768-5136.

Article & Book: Review: 'New' Tolkien splendidly rewarding

http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/books/04/17/review.tolkien.ap/index.html

By Bruce DeSilva
Associated Press

(AP) -- Six thousand years before the Fellowship of the Ring, long before anyone had even seen a Hobbit, the elves and men of Middle-earth quaked at the power of the dark lord Morgoth.

Hunted by easterlings and orcs, they fled to the fastness of Nargothrond and to the deep forests of Brethil and Doriath. Among them, a hero emerged. Strong and courageous he was, but foolhardy and impetuous. His name was Turin, son of Hurin.

His story, released today by Houghton Mifflin, is a publishing event: It is the first new book by the creator of "The Lord of the Rings" in 30 years. The publisher calls it the culmination of an effort to bring to the public the vast body of work J.R.R. Tolkien had left unpublished, and largely unfinished, when he died in 1973.

Tolkien began writing "The Children of Hurin" 99 years ago, abandoning it and taking it up again repeatedly throughout his life. Versions of the tale already have appeared in "The Silmarillion," "Unfinished Tales" and as narrative poems or prose sections of the "History of Middle-earth" series.

Dedicated to the Preservation of Prairie Dogs

We are a non-profit organization. Our mission is to preserve the species and its environment and to provide information and education about prairie dogs to the public.

Prairie Dog Pals of Albuquerque, New Mexico has been helping to care for prairie dogs in the city. To ensure their survival we provide supplemental feeding in barren areas. We also capture and relocate prairie dogs where loss of habitat or human conflict threatens their existence. Finally, we provide information about prairie dogs to the public through outreach.

Please visit our NEWS page to learn about current activities.
The ARCHIVES page has a collection of prairie dog related information and articles. PLEASE DONATE!

Our Goals Are:

* To preserve appropriate areas of land for prairie dogs which naturally exist in the Greater Albuquerque Area.

* To preserve areas of suitable habitat in all New Mexico counties where prairie dogs naturally exist.

* To acquire public lands for the purpose of allowing prairie dogs and other native wildlife to co-exist with humans.

Albuquerque Area:Horseback Riding Classes. Anyone?

Contact information at the end of the email for Raven (the mom setting this up):

I called around for a stable class/field trip and this is what I've found...

Please let me know if your family might be interested and I may be able to negotiate better prices based on the number of children/participants we have.

Sundance Stables of Corrales

For two hours at the stables we would get an hour on the horses/riding the trails and an hour viewing the stables learning about grooming living environments of a horse etc. All of this for 35$ per active participant. I know this is a lot so just let me know what you all think. (If anyone knows of a place that has better rates please let me know and I would be more than glad to call and set something up for us as well. )

Also I found a place called Bishops Lodge Ranch

They have goats, chickens, and ducks. They said we are free to browse around the property and just observe and possibly feed the animals. This could be a fun field trip as well I'm just throwing these out there to see what the response is like and then we can work on dates/times etc.

Thanks everyone and continue the great job of being a homeschooler!!!!

Albuquerque: Tour of the National Hispanic Cultural Center

Reply to the thread included in this email, you do not have to be a

just register as a user of the forum to respond.--Tabbi
***********************************************************************************
Tabbi,

The link to the National Hispanic Cultural Center thread in the
Albuquerque HomeLearners Public Forum is:

http://www.abqhomelearners.org/forum29/1243.html

There are only 4 spots left in the "younger" group, but only 2 (1
adult 1 child) are signed up for the older group. So what I'm
initially hoping for is to get more older group participants, or we
may just have 2 mixed groups.

Thanks for your help!

-Julie
Join us for a tour of the National Hispanic Cultural Center on
Tuesday, April 24th at 10AM!

We will have two docents and will be able to divide our group into two
so that one tour will be aimed at a younger level (preschool through
2nd grade) and the other at an older level (3rd grade through 12 yrs).
The two groups will then meet up at the end. As I'm sure most
parents will want to take the tour with their younger children, we
just need to make sure we have 1 adult per seven kids with the older
group. There is a limit of 20 participants per group. Adults are
counted as participants.

The Tour Director has the following requests:

Bring your own notebook.
Please bring a pencil (not pens).
No food or drink in the museum.
No photo taking in the museum.

The Center is located at 1701 4th St SW, 87102 246-2261

LOCATION
The National Hispanic Cultural Center is located at the Intersection
of 4th Street SW and Avenida César Chávez (Bridge Street).
DIRECTIONS
From I-25, exit Avenida César Chávez, follow west over railroad
tracks, to 4th Street Parking lot entrance on César Chávez.
From Downtown, follow 4th Street south to Avenida
César Chávez. Parking accessible from 4th Street.

Violin Lessons Ages 5-HS

I have started a new violin program at the Cottonwood Montessori School in
Corrales (a mile north of Alameda and Coors). The program is not limited to
the Montessori students and I'd love to see homeschooled children also
become involved. I teach all levels from age five through High School.
Each student receives one private lesson per week. For the young ones I
offer a private as well as group lesson each week. I am inviting interested
children to join a new class in August. It is a wonderful opportunity to
learn music in a city with a very well established youth symphony orchestra
program, which is also an excellent venue to socialize with other children.

Parents who are interested can contact me at 505-254-7551. Anybody is
welcome to come and observe our group classes/concerts and to see if it
would be something they would be interested in for their children.

Sincerely,
Maria Stefanova

Deadline Extended, Asthma Poster and Mascot contests

The poster contest deadline has been extended to April 25th. All posters must be received by April 25th. I'd love to see some homeschooler entries!

As far as the mascot contest, we need homeschool representation. This can be a great project for any homeschool group.
