1. TODAY IN HISTORY
The Year was 1892 . . .
and today the great fantasy writer J.R.R. Tolkien was
born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He moved to Eng-
land at an early age, along with his mother and young-
er brother. They were never wealthy, and when Tolkien
was 12 years old his mother died, leaving him to live
in boarding houses. He made up languages as a boy and
displayed a knack for storytelling, especially with his
own children. He met C.S. Lewis as a student at Oxford,
and here Tolkien began writing short notes in his school
papers about a certain character named a hobbit. His
series on the world of middle earth became favorites
for the ages. If you're planning on reading or study-
ing "The Hobbit" of "Lord of the Rings" this year, try
