Get Ready to “Count Birds for the Record”
Sunday, February 18, 2007 at Rinconada Canyon—8:30 am
What mid-winter activity is fun, easy, free, and helps bird
conservation? What can parents and teachers do with children that can
connect them to a whole new world of natural wonders? This February, the
10th annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), sponsored by the Cornell
Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, will give everyone a
chance to discover the birds in their neighborhood and “Count for the
Record.”
An important part of America’s Great Backyard is the 730 million acres
of land held in trust by federal agencies including the National Park
Service. Stewardship of this land is important because it supports
significant populations of wild birds. Become a citizen scientist and
join Petroglyph National Monument’s Volunteer birder Lannois Neely and
help count birds for the 10th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count, at the
monument’s Rinconada Canyon. No previous experience is necessary.
Participants should meet at the Rinconada Canyon parking area at 8:30
am. Rinconada Canyon is located at the intersection of Unser Blvd. NW
and St. Joseph Rd. Bring binoculars, water, and dress for the weather
conditions of the day. This hike is ideal for the beginning birder or
family group. Call Susanna Villanueva, Park Ranger at 505-899-0205 ext.
332 for more information. No advanced registration is required.
Participants who want to hone their bird watching skills can learn more
from the GBBC web site, which offers identification tips and access to
photos, sounds, maps, and natural history information on more than 500
bird species. For more information on the Great Backyard Bird Count
visit www.birdsource.org/gbbc
Petroglyph National Monument is cooperatively managed by the National
Park Service and the City of Albuquerque.
