Alison Goldman thinks she knows the best educational path for herfive- year-old son, but she just couldn't convince Jacob's principal ofthe merits of skipping senior kindergarten and placing him in Grade 1this year.
"I leapt through every hoop. The psychologist, the daycare workersthat he knew and the social worker all recommended to just skip him andput him in Grade 1. I went in with everything and they just said no,"says the North Toronto parent.
"They didn't think it was a good idea because he couldn't copesocially. But mostly, they said, 'We don't do it. Period. End ofstory.' "
In an era when the words "failing" and "skipping" have virtuallydisappeared from public education, parents and teachers often face offwith school administrators about how best to deal with children whoeither can't keep up or who find the slow pace of learning in a regularclassroom to be soul-destroying.
