SOMOS Winter Writers Series READING
Subject: Powerful Trio of Men, Music, and Muse
Novelist Sean Murphy's The Hope Valley Hubcap King won
the 1999 Hemingway Award for a First Novel. Since then
he has published The Finished Man, a comic tale of
writers and the writing life, and The Time of New
Weather, a satiric comedy that imagines what might
follow if the American government was acquired in a
corporate buyout. He is also the author of One Bird,
One Stone: 108 American Zen Stories, a chronicle of
Zen practice in America. A protégé of Natalie
Goldberg, Murphy teaches creative writing and
literature at UNM-Taos, and leads his own Big Sky
Writing Workshops.

Gifted musician, composer and actor Patrick
Shendo-Mirabal is from Jemez and Taos Pueblo. Drawing
on life stories from his Jemez family and ancestors,
Patrick writes and performs his own music, composed on
flutes he crafts himself. Equally fluent on the
Australian aboriginal didgeridoo, Patrick composed and
performed the score for Southwest Repertory Theater?s
