School to World, Albuquerque Convention Center

(I was able to copy and paste some of the flyers into this email, if you need some sent privately to you let me know!--Tabbi)

Tamara,
I want to make sure that we don't miss the home school population in our informing the community about School to World. It is a career exploration event for New Mexico 8th and 9th graders (but is open to all ages and families). It will be March 10, 2007 at the Albuquerque Convention Center from 9 am - 2 pm and it is free of charge for all. It takes about two hours to experience the event. There are approximately 500 adult career presenters there and they represent over 150 different careers. We have a website schooltoworld.org and I am attaching an informational flyer. Will you please distribute as you think appropriate. I am happy to answer any questions.

School to World is an opportunity for business, government, and education to partner to help 8TH and 9th students explore careers and encourage them to stay in school.

The eighth annual School to World career event will be held Saturday, March 10, 2007, at the Albuquerque Convention Center from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. It was very successful last year with over 2000 students participating from all over the state. Students, parents, and teachers will have the opportunity to talk to representatives from over 150 careers and also institutions of higher learning.

We hope you will be enthused about this event and support and promote School to World at your school. If you have questions, call Pam Catanach at Sandia National Laboratories, 284-5211 pcatana@sandia.gov.

After we have received your registration form, we will follow up with a confirmation packet in late January that includes directions, posters, and communications that are to be sent home to parents or used in newsletters.

We look forward to your participation!

Dear Parents,
The future of our community is your student, and that future depends on how well prepared he/she is today to address the challenges of tomorrow. Education is the key to this preparation. However, our educational institutions cannot do this alone; partnerships with government, business, the public and parents are essential in the adequate preparation of our students.

As we explore opportunities to truly making a meaningful difference, we have focused to provide students – our original target being the 8th and 9th grade – a better awareness and understanding of what awaits them in the “real world” as to education, jobs, careers, community involvement, and life. It is imperative that our high school graduates be prepared for 1) relationships and community; 2) further education and training (apprenticeships, career schools, technical-vocational schools, colleges and universities); 3) the workplace; and 4) lifelong learning as society, technology and jobs change at an ever increasing pace. The transition from school to world can indeed be traumatic; however, we want to help by providing a glimpse of the world that awaits our youth.

We believe “curriculum and courses are often irrelevant if the student does not have a destination in mind.” We hope to provide our student participants a glimpse of a variety of possible destinations – jobs, careers, education/training opportunities and community involvement - for them during our School to World event.

We need your help. The success of School to World depends on the strength of our community partnership. Parents play the most critical role in encouraging their children. Attached is information on the School to World event on Saturday March 10, 2007 at the Albuquerque Convention Center, Southeast Ballroom anytime between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. It’s free. We hope that you and your student will attend, or that you encourage your student to attend this fun and educational event.

Sincerely,

The School to World Program Committee
