NM Museum of Natural History, Winter/Spring 2007 Teacher Programs

Project WILD/Aquatic WILD Workshop

Saturday, March 10, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., SMNHC

Project WILD is a K-12 interdisciplinary ecology, conservation,

and environmental education program that emphasizes

wildlife. You will go home with two award-winning

Project WILD guides (revised editions) full of fun, hands-on

activities for your classroom. The activities cover many

New Mexico Content Standards and Benchmarks in science,

math, and language arts. Jointly sponsored by the

Sandia Mountain Natural History Center and the New

Mexico Department of Game and Fish.

Level: Teachers of K to 12th grade

Cost: Free! (includes two guides)



Bosque Education Guide Workshop

Friday, March 30, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., RGNC

The Bosque Education Guide has background information,

activities, curriculum suggestions, and references to help

you teach about the bosque. This workshop (held at the

Rio Grande Nature Center) will cover topics such as the

history of the river, service learning projects, ecosystems,

and geology, and will have activities that are appropriate

for the classroom, outside on the playground, and in the

bosque. This workshop is jointly sponsored by the RGNC

and NMMNHS.

Level: Teachers of elementary to 12th grade

Cost: Free! (includes a free copy of the Bosque Education

Guide and kit of materials; parking at RGNC $3)



New Mexico’s Land Before Time:

An Early Childhood Teacher Workshop

Saturday, April 21, 9:30 a.m. to noon, NMMNHS

Are your students fascinated with dinosaurs? Help your

students discover New Mexico’s prehistory by using the

NMMNHS as a resource. This workshop will include hands-on

classroom lessons and interactive museum-based activities to

transform your students into junior paleontologists exploring

animals and plants of prehistoric habitats.

Level: Teachers of pre-K to 2nd grade

Cost: $10 (includes curriculum and a copy of TimeTracks: A

Journey Through the Natural World)



Ant Homes Under the Ground

Saturday, April 28, 9 a.m. to noon, Wemagination Center

We’ll engage in delightful science and math activities to

experience first-hand how to introduce young children to ant

behavior using role play, cooperative exercises, and close

observation of live ants. You’ll assemble a large poster in

stages to highlight ant tunnels, food, social structure, and life

cycles. This workshop is jointly sponsored by NMMNHS and

UNM’s Family Development Program.

Level: Teachers of pre-K to 2nd grade

Cost: $18 (includes GEMS guide)



SMNHC’s Wild Sandia! Short Course

Saturday, May 19, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., SMNHC

Come explore the Sandias! Hike with Sandia Mountain Natural

History Center educators and learn about the natural history

and ecology of these beautiful mountains. You will take home

hands-on activities and fascinating facts about local plants

and animals. The local focus will help students learn ecological

principles more easily!

Level: All Teachers (also available to non-teachers)

Cost: Free!
