Diving and Snorkeling That Count top
Thursday, January 4, 12:45 - 1:30pm, Aquarium-Garden
Education
Saturday, January 6, 12:45 - 1:30pm, Aquarium-Garden
Education
Brown Bag lectures at the Aquarium/Garden are open to
the public at no charge. In July 2006 the Reef
Environmental Education Foundation sponsored a marine
ecology expedition to Little Cayman Island. While
diving in a spectacular environment participants
conducted over 200 fish censuses that augmented the
REEF database. Little Cayman is also the site of one
of the few remaining spawning aggregations of the
endangered Nassau grouper. This aggregation is
protected by the Cayman Government and is monitored by
the Reef Grouper Moon Project. Sound transmitters
surgically embedded in groupers are used to track the
fish as they swim to and from the spawning site.
Snorkel searches are used to find young fish. The
Grouper Moon Project is an example of a cooperative
effort to protect an endangered resource. The
implications of this work to other aggregation sites
and to the propagation of the species throughout the
Caribbean will be discussed.

Winter Fire Colors Flower Show - Mediterranean
Conservatory.
Through the end of February, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM top

Hot purples, magentas and pinks contrast with cool
yellows and creamy whites in the Winter Fire Colors
flower show going on now in the Rio Grande Botanic
Garden’s Mediterranean Conservatory. Almost two
thousand snapdragons, Euryops daisies, Linaria,
emesia, Scaevola, Argyranthemums, and Felicia - all
flowers found in Mediterranean climates - have been
grown on-site at the BioPark’s greenhouses especially
for the winter show. This lush floral display can be
found hanging off the railings, flowing out of
three-tiered baskets, perched on rocks, and planted
for seasonal color in the ground at the Mediterranean
Conservatory. An established bed of Forest Lilies,
with light pink-orange flowers, is putting on its
once-a-year show, also, in the Conservatory. In
Mediterranean climates, winters are moist and bring
fresh growth. Visit the Rio Grande Botanic Garden,
2601 Central Ave. NW, now through the end of February
to soak up some winter moisture and anticipate the New
Mexico spring. The Winter Fire Colors Show is included
with regular admission -- $7 for adults 13-64; $3 for
children 3-12 and seniors 65 and older.
