Albuquerque, First Friday Fractals - March 2'nd 6:00 & 7:30

Hi everyone, and welcome to the new people on this list!

Yup... it's that time of the month again: First Friday Fractals is happening again this week, and I encourage those of you who haven't seen this show yet to come check it out! This Friday at 6:00 and 7:30 at the LodeStar Planetarium in the Natural History Museum in ABQ.

Why, you may wonder, am I so passionate about these fractals, traveling all over the state to all sorts of audiences, working all month to create new fractal animations for our shows at LodeStar, writing grant proposals to bring these things to larger audiences... What's up with that? Well.... I believe that fractals are a sort of "Magic Elixir", the answer to our cultural failings in math and science education. To succeed in the world, our society MUST be adept at math and science, but sadly, our schools are just not doing a good enough job. The statistics are both depressing and frightening. I refuse to believe that students in Asia and Europe are inherently smarter than our kids here in New Mexico. I just think that our students are lacking motivation. "Why should I learn this?" is the most common question a math teacher hears. Fractals provide the spectacular answer. Because they make math fun and beautiful and interactive and engaging - finally, we have a geometry that really describes the natural world. Every audience I share this amazing and beautiful material with is blown away, not just with the concepts I share, but with the potential to generate excitement in learning...

So, come check out what I'm talking about at our extremely popular and successful show at the LodeStar Planetarium. As usual, I recommend getting your tickets ahead of time, by calling the Museum's box office at 841-2869. We have sold out every single show (16 in a row now!) since we started doing this last summer, so in all likelihood it'll fill up again. So get there early to get in and get the best seats. I sure hope we sell out - please, bring your friends too!

I really want to thank everyone who contributed this past month to our buy-a-new-computer fund. We can't make fractal zooms without computers, and your donations have been making it possible. We're within about $400 of having this amazing new machine paid off. Thank you thank you thank you! And your (tax deductible) donations are still welcome of course!

Stay tuned for exciting news coming up soon - we'll be having a gallery display of fine art printed fractals soon, and we'll be announcing a new series of shows at LodeStar soon as well. Lots of great fractal fun in store...
