"LEARN TO" CAVE ADVENTURE SERIES

What: Imagine hiking into a cave—all daylight ceases after the first twenty feet of hiking. You are guided only by the illumination from your headlamp. Then, the cave narrows and you must crawl on your hands and knees to reach your destination. Once there, everyone turns off their lights and the cave is pitch black—you cannot even see your hand in front of your face. This is an example of what youth experience during an Outdoor Recreation spelunking adventure. Our trained Adventure Leaders will teach the guests how to safely explore caves with the latest equipment and newest techniques. The "Learn To" series will be three full day sessions, beginning with the basics of cave techniques and etiquette, and continuing with exploring an "easy" cave, then a "hard" cave. Each guest needs to bring water, lunch, snacks and sunscreen and wear sturdy shoes (hiking or good fitting tennis shoes), and tough, loose fitting pants. Dress for the weather, but bring a jacket for inside the cave. Keep in mind that caves are rough places, and your clothes may be damaged during the adventure, so wear old ones.

Who: There are twelve spaces for youth ages 11-17

Prerequisite: Must be able to hike two miles, and be able to attend all 3 sessions
