My family went on a great field trip this week. It was to Shooting Star Farms. They are in the East Mts but not too far out (they are near Sedillo hill which is about half way to Edgewood) They have lots of animals ~ llamas, alpacas, goats, sheep, donkeys. We got to feed the animals. But the best part was this is a fiber farm, which means they specialize in using animal fibers to make yarn. Connie, the woman that owns the farm, and a friend of hers, taught my kids how to card raw wool and use a drop spindle. They showed them how to spin wool with a spinning wool and taught them about shearing, dyeing and knitting. We also got a bunch of handouts and coloring sheets to bring home. The cost was $2/kid and $3/adult. She does small groups and was very accommodating. In the spring there will be lots of baby animals and they will be shearing the animals. You can see more info at shootingstar-farm.com or you can reach her at 281-7775.
