A wonderful thing happened Wednesday, through the wonderful moms who attend this monthly meeting we were able to get volunteers to run the meeting and take notes on the great speaker we had that night, Dr. Keller of Real Science 4 Kids, because I could not attend. These circumstances occurred because my daughter is going to her first tournament this weekend and the coach wanted her at an extra practice that night and she looked at me and said 'I want you there mom' so I had to be. That is why we homeschool, why we parent, why we have the community we do so that we can be there for our kids when they need us, when they are doing something that excites them or learn something new! I am so grateful for our community members that pulled together to help me out and I look forward to more great learning experiences and camaraderie in the future. Here are the notes put together, look for my next community night to be advertised this weekend:
Dr. Keller: She has a Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry. She has 3 children whom she homeschooled all the way, with the oldest now in public high school, and the younger two still at home. What pushed her to develop this science curriculum was her own struggles in the sciences, particularly in her basic level college chemistry class. It was all "Greek", having never seen or heard about many of these topics, and she spent more time trying to catch up, while losing the points of the lecture. Her take on what is missing in science education these days can be found in the front pages of their catalog. In a nutshell: traditionally math is taught as a separate entity, and then you receive general science through earth and space, and biology texts. You may get 1 semester each of physics and chemistry in high school..but by then a lot of the inquisitiveness of youth has been traded in for worries over grades and transcripts.....and let's face it-one semester is not enough to get a good grasp on these hefty subjects. She believes that any any science topic is properly and more thoroughly explained through a combination of the disciplines, for example: photosynthesis= biology+ chemistry, etc. When you leave out the chemistry, there are gaping holes in the knowledge. Too many science texts today give tons of unrelated facts, which kids are expected to memorize and "regurgitate" on a test or quiz. But do they really know the how and why? And how these facts connect into the scheme of something bigger? Her curriculum aims to give children a good foundation in chemistry, biology, and physics beginning at the K-3rd level, so that they can more readily grasp science concepts and fit them together.
Eventually they hope to have texts for all three disciplines in every grade level, but for the time being she created the ones for the grades that seem to be lacking in science the most. Each text has a corresponding lab workbook and teacher manual (which helps with the labs.) The focus of the labs is to get kids to use their scientific minds. Beginning labs have experiments to use, but as the children progress, they will design their own experiments and labs. They will have scientific confidence!! On another note-she is developing a line of workbooks designed to bring chemistry, biology, and physics across the curriculum and tie it to 6 other areas: language, technology, critical thinking, history, art/literature/music, and philosophy. So far the language one is available for purchase for each of the science disciplines.
So far the texts available (along with supporting materials) are:
Chemistry Pre-Level I-(K-3rd)
Chemistry Level I
Biology Level I
Physics Level I (level I is for 4th-6th grade)
Chemistry Level II (7th-9th grade)
She recommends taking a semester for each text, or longer if the child is really into the labs! She also recommends taking them in the following order: chemistry, biology, then physics. Even though there is not a text available for every discipline in every grade, she says completing these books will lay the foundation for your student to be able to navigate areas of other chemistry, biology , or physics books with confidence.

Beyond IQ: Kids Who Can Focus on the Task at Hand Do Better in Math
Scientific American
Attention span and reasoning may get higher marks than intelligence, especially in math
Turnsout that sheer intelligence is not enough to become a young math whiz.It also takes a good attention span and training your mind to "selfregulate" or focus on the task at hand.
The measure for academic success for decades has been aperson's intelligence quotient, or IQ. But new research published inthe journal Child Development says that a thought processcalled "executive functioning," which governs the ability to reason andmentally focus, also plays a critical role in learning, especially whenit comes to math skills.
"It's often thought that kids don't do well because they'redumb, and there's nothing we can do about it," says lead study authorClancy Blair, associate professor of human development and familystudies at Pennsylvania State University. "But not only is executivefunction pivotal for academic success, it's amenable to training, andthis training might make a big difference in a child?s ability."

Hexagon on Saturn?! & Get out your telescopes Asteroid watching!
Space Weather News for March 28, 2007
http://spaceweather.com
A HEXAGON ON SATURN: The Cassini spacecraft has photographed a bizarre geometrical figure encircling Saturn's north pole: a hexagon. NASA scientists say they've never seen anything like it on any other planet. Images are posted on http://spaceweather.com.
The formation of the giant hexagon is a mystery you can ponder tonight under the stars. After sunset on March 28th, Saturn rises in the east beautifully close to the Moon. This makes Saturn easy to find and enjoy. Even a small telescope will reveal the planet's broad rings and largest moons. Take a look!
ASTEROID FLYBY: Asteroid 2006 VV2 is due to fly past Earth on March 30th and 31st. The 2 km-wide space rock will streak through the constellation Leo only 2 million miles away glowing like a 9th-to-10th magnitude star. Backyard telescopes equipped with CCD cameras should have no trouble filming the asteroid in flight. Visit http://spaceweather.com for ephemerides and more information.

Albuquerque: Wildlife Rescue volunteering
It's that time of year again! We are getting prepped for baby season (which has already started) and we're offering clinic training on March 31 and April 7. Kids over 15 can volunteer on their own. If they are 13 and up, they need a parent or guardian to come with them. Let me know if anyone is interested and I'll get you the info.

PBS Show:Journey To Planet Earth:State of the World's Ocean Animals
Sea Notes Special Edition
March 27, 2007
This week we're raising awareness about threats to ocean wildlife
You can't begin to address the serious threats facing ocean wildlife until people become aware that the threats exist. So we're proud to let you know that, this week, we're a big part of two huge steps to raise public awareness.
On Tuesday, March 27—when millions of DVD copies of the Academy Award®-winning animated film Happy Feet went on sale—every copy carried a 2007 Seafood Watch pocket guide. Through our partnership with Warner Home Video, the pocket guide is also featured on the Happy Feet web site along with a public service announcement about problems related to overfishing. The PSA is also featured on the Happy Feet DVD.
Then, on Wednesday, March 28 our Sea Otter Research and Conservation program will be featured prominently in a new PBS program, Journey to Planet Earth: State of the World's Ocean Animals. The program, narrated by Matt Damon, will air on PBS stations nationally. You can learn more about the program and find out when it will air in your community.
Raising awareness is just one of the ways all of us at the Monterey Bay Aquarium work to assure a future with healthy oceans. Thanks for helping us to make a difference!
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a non-profit institution. Our mission is to inspire conservation of the oceans. You can support our many education programs and marine research projects by:
* Becoming a member or making an online donation.
* Joining forces with the aquarium to take action on critical ocean issues.
* Sending a conservation-oriented electronic postcard to friends.
We welcome your thoughts and comments.
Monterey Bay Aquarium, 886 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA 93940.
24-Hour Info: 831-648-4888. Open every day except Dec. 25.

Webresource: Classical Conversations
Welcome to Classical Conversations' website
Classical Conversations was founded in 1997 by Leigh Bortins to provide Academic Programs and Services for home school families everywhere. Since then, it has grown from Leigh's living room and a handful of students to hundreds of students and teams of home school parents across the US.
Our once-a-week, supplemental, academic programs provide a committed Christian community and structure and support, along with great fellowship for the students. We offer Foundations (K4-6th), Essentials (3rd-6th), and Challenge for (7th-12).
Birthed out of a desire to equip every parent in teaching their children, Leigh has developed Parent Practicums, which range from one-day to three-day events with academic camps for students. Our 1-Day Practicums are led by state teams in various cities and states throughout the year. Our 3-Day Practicums are led by CC's trained practicum facilitators in the spring/summer months in select states.
If you have been looking for a community of home schoolers who use the Classical Model for education, live by Christian principles, and enjoy learning, come and visit us at one of our programs or practicums.

Update: Stories from Far Away Islands, Deep Forests and Magical Gardens
Tabbi and Shannon, can you please send this on to whatever groups you sent it to…Thank you!
Since I've been asked, I thought I better clarify. If you RSVP, but then cancel prior to the RSVP deadline, you will not have to pay.
Only if you RSVP and your family is included in the total numbers, determining the cost for everyone else, and you then have to cancel, will you still have to pay.
What the above means is that if you sign up for this event, but then there aren't enough people signed up by the RSVP deadline to make it affordable for you, as long as you take your name off the list by midnight on the 9th, you won't be counted in the totals.

Albuquerque Gem and Mineral Club.
Thanks to another homeschooler I got the info on the Albuquerque Gem and Mineral Club. We went to a meeting and it was so amazing. Talk about an 'unclaimed treasure'! This club meets once a month and has scheduled field trips for kids as well as adults. The kids get hands on experience. If your interested in attending a meeting or just want some information, please call Suzi Weaver-Haskell @ 505.890.4401 or email powitree@hotmail.com . The group also has a web page for information. www.agmc.info Thanks, Melanie

"LEARN TO" CAVE ADVENTURE SERIES
What: Imagine hiking into a cave—all daylight ceases after the first twenty feet of hiking. You are guided only by the illumination from your headlamp. Then, the cave narrows and you must crawl on your hands and knees to reach your destination. Once there, everyone turns off their lights and the cave is pitch black—you cannot even see your hand in front of your face. This is an example of what youth experience during an Outdoor Recreation spelunking adventure. Our trained Adventure Leaders will teach the guests how to safely explore caves with the latest equipment and newest techniques. The "Learn To" series will be three full day sessions, beginning with the basics of cave techniques and etiquette, and continuing with exploring an "easy" cave, then a "hard" cave. Each guest needs to bring water, lunch, snacks and sunscreen and wear sturdy shoes (hiking or good fitting tennis shoes), and tough, loose fitting pants. Dress for the weather, but bring a jacket for inside the cave. Keep in mind that caves are rough places, and your clothes may be damaged during the adventure, so wear old ones.
Who: There are twelve spaces for youth ages 11-17
Prerequisite: Must be able to hike two miles, and be able to attend all 3 sessions
Cost: The cost is $30 for the series
When: Monday, July 2, 2007, 8:00am-1:00pm: Outdoor Recreation Office, U-Mound boulder field
Tuesday, July 3, 2007, 8:00am-5:00pm: Junction Cave, El Malpais National Monument
Friday, July 6, 2007, 8:00am-5:00pm: Diablo Cave, near Santa Fe
Where: U-Mound, in the Sandia foothills; Junction Cave, El Malpais; Diablo Cave, near Santa Fe. All trips meet at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building at 1801 4th Street NW and then guests are transported in a City vehicle to the destination of the day. Please be here between 7:45am and 8:00am, so we can leave on time.

Albuquerque: Stories from Far Away Islands, Deep Forests and Magical Gardens
"Stories from Far Away Islands, Deep Forests and Magical Gardens.
A princess who marries a wolf, an old hag who steals the sun and the moon, the first singer of stories, a magic rosemary plant, sea-ladies, dragons, air daughters …
These are some of the characters you will meet in our performances. We tell these folktales, myths and ballads with words, movement, masks, song and music.
We have stories for the very young to the very old, and we would love to tell you some of these tales.
In our performances we use a mix of word, movement, mask, dance, and live music to make the stories from ancient times come alive for the audience. Scott creates original music for each story inspired by the characters and the background of the story or makes arrangements of the traditional ballads and Johanna uses her skills from training in both western and East Indian dance and mime to portray the heroes and heroines and their adventures." -Scott and Johanna Hongell-Darsee
Doesn't that sound like fun!
Albuquerque Home Learners is opening this event, at 10 a.m. on April 20th in the dance hall at Heights Community Center, to all homeschoolers.
Heights Community Center (823 Buena Vista S.E.—very close to UNM) has an amazing dance hall with a stage in the oldest community center in Albuquerque. It was built in the late 1930's and one can almost hear the memories of the past while standing in that room.
The performance will be geared for PreK(ages 3 -5) to Grade 3 (ages 7-8), but all ages are welcome.
The more people that come, the less it will be per person. 2 and under are free, all others must pay for the event. The total cost is $250.00. If we get 50 paying attendees, then it will only be $5 per person. But, there is room for much more than 50, so we could bring it down even lower.
The RSVP deadline is Monday, April 9th, that is two weeks from today (March 26th). At that time we will count the total paying number and divide it into the $250 to determine the amount that must be paid by each paying attendee. Do not RSVP unless you are committing to pay. If you RSVP, you will have to pay, even if you later learn you can't attend the event.
Payments must be received by Monday, April 16th. Checks should be made payable to Kari Mackay and mailed to 29 B Northview Trail; Edgewood, NM 87015. If your payment is not received by Monday, April 16th your name will not be on the list for admission.
If you are interested in learning more about this performing team, you can visit their website http://johanna.itgo.com.
To RSVP, please reply to the thread at http://www.abqhomelearners.org/view_topic.php?id=1187&forum_id=29. Include your name, the total number in your group, and the total number that are over the age of 2.
Please feel free to pass this information on to other homeschoolers.

The show features six African American women who join their powerful voices, along with hand percussion instruments, to create a blend of lyrics, movement and narrative that variously relate history, point the finger at injustice, encourage activism, and sing the praises of love.

New Mexico Resource: Fractals on the Radio! ...and more...
Hi everyone! Just a quick update about some of the exciting things we're up to...
First of all, I'll be talking about fractals on KKOB 770 AM Radio tomorrow (Sunday) morning at 10:00 AM. I'll be on the weekly show "High-Tech New Mexico" with my friend Jill Black Garcia, an elementary school teacher in Rio Rancho whose students have benefited from learning about fractals and chaos theory.
We'll be talking about the incredible successes we've been having bringing this material to students. Fractals bring math to life, making it exciting, beautiful and interactive. Instead of seeming boring, abstract and irrelevant, fractals are fun and interesting, and they actually describe the patterns in nature. Most kids aren't inherently interested in the geometry of spheres, cubes, cones, etc, but they are fascinated by the geometry of mountains, rivers, coastlines, trees, lightning bolts, etc. Students of ALL ages are inspired by fractals, and we are using this excitement to motivate learning in math and science classes.
So - I invite you to tune in on 770 KKOB and listen to us share the exciting things we're achieving. We'll be on for the whole hour from 10-11.
We've been getting some good [print] press lately too - please check out a copy of New Mexico Kids Magazine (freely available in lots of outlets) for a great illustrated story about our programs.
Also, I'll be on KUNM's Performance New Mexico sometime in the week leading up to the April 6th First Friday Fractals show at LodeStar.
Speaking of which - since we've had such tremendous success with this public program, selling out all 18 shows in a row - I'm working with the planetarium and museum to try to add a third show to the schedule on April 6th. This is not official yet, so I'll let you all know if/when that is finally approved. I hate having to turn people away from these shows (as we consistently must), and I really appreciate the patience and perseverance of the dedicated fractal fans out there who have been turned away and keep trying to see the show. Thanks so much for your interest! I've got some fabulous new superdeep fractal zooms to share this time, and the shows just keep getting better and better.
More exciting news ahead,
-Jonathan Wolfe, Ph.D.

I would like to arrange an additional class for homeschoolers at the Presbyterian Children's Health Fair, for Monday, April 16 at 1:30. The minimum number of kids required to add a class is 10, but they would prefer 15 or more. Please indicate your interest below, and if we can get the required minimum I will go ahead a book this class. If fewer than 10 sign up, I will see if we can squeeze into an existing class.
Ages PreK-Grade 4. More appropriate for PreK-1 but older children can be helpers. Bring a doll or stuffed animal to be the "patient".
Must arrive 10 minutes early so that the lesson can begin promptly!
Directions: Presbyterian Hospital is located on 1100 Central Ave. SE. Please allow time for parking.

Grumpy Mr. Grady is the second eBook that homeschool dad Scott Stroud
has posted online.
You can read the book online, download the pdf and print it yourself,
or send him some money for a print edition.
I know many of you are looking for books to read to younger kids or
that could be read by a young reader that features realistic
homeschooled kids, so I thought I'd share the link with you and
encourage you pass it along to your homeschool support groups so he'll

Resource: Dinah Zike Health Update & New Product
Dearest Friends, I will never be able to thank you enough for the thousands of e-mails and hundreds of cards and letters that I have received over the last few months. I am physically unable to respond to each, but please know how your thoughts and prayers have helped me though this time. I have also found a whole sisterhood of breast cancer patients and survivors who I cherish! I will begin six weeks of radiation in May, and should be finished with the majority of my treatments by the end of June. I am so fortunate to be surrounded by a huge support group that includes each of you, my husband, family, DMA co-workers, McGraw-Hill, and Comfort, Texas neighbors. Please remind those you love to have mammograms on a regular basis!
I am finally able to say that I am doing well. I've had allergic reactions to Taxotere, but this has lessened now that I'm receiving chemo in lesser doses on a weekly basis. I have chemo today and then only three more treatments. My first presentation since August will be on Friday of this week at NCTM (March 23). Yes, I will attend and speak at NSTA, the next week, too. Please come by the Dinah-Might booth and say "Hi" to Marcy and/or me at either conference, and send your friends to my sessions.
World History Book at Press: The Big Book of World History is at the printer, and will be in our warehouse the first of April. We will ship orders we have already received as soon as it is in inventory. Those who wish to order this book may do so now. Please forward this announcement to anyone who might be interested.
Dinah Zike Academy: Classes will resume for my trainer-of-trainers program in June. Please check the calendar at http:// www.dinah.com for a listing of sessions offered and times. We have had several very exciting sessions in our 25,000 sq. foot building with a retreat-like setting in the Texas Hill Country. Look for pictures on the Web-site. We need campus/district trainers, so check with your district and see if they have funding that will allow you to join us for this exciting program. If you plan to progress through the program to the state or national level, note that you must attend one Cross-Curricular session. That is why I recommend taking this course first, and so many of these courses are offered.
New Language Arts Series : 300+ page books with over 1,000 full-color photographs.
This series introduces twenty of my new folds and presents a new teaching method of visual kinesthetic vocabulary that I refer to VKV TM. I have been developing this program for years, and I'm excited to finally have it close to completion.
Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling: PreK-2nd : Will be premiered and pre-sold at IRA in Toronto. Books will not be shipped until early Summer 2007.
Focus: Phonics: Foldables TM, VKVs TM, and word lists for use with both.
Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling: 3rd - 6th : Will be premiered and pre-sold at IRA in Toronto. Books will not be shipped until mid-Summer 2007.
Focus: Strengthening content vocabulary, word attack skills, with special kinesthetic activities for the ESL/ELL learner. Foldables TM, VKVs TM, and word lists for use with both.
Vocabulary, Spelling, and Test Prep: 6th-12th : Will be premiered and pre-sold at IRA in Toronto. Books will not be shipped until the end of August 2007.
Focus: Building a strong reading and speaking vocabulary utilizing unique kinesthetic activities that prepare students for SAT, ACT, state tests, and life. MS/HS teachers and college i nstructors who are preparing students for the GED should consider purchasing the 3rd-6th book. Foldables TM, VKVs TM, and Extensive Word Lists
We hope to have the Grammar and Writing Book will be available in December 2007.
I will begin a greatly reduced speaking regimen in late Summer and Fall 2007. I will be presenting more short sessions and keynotes. Let my office know if I can be of help in this manner. I am so excited to feel better and to know there is "life after chemo", but I have also learned a great lesson on what is important in my life. I love my work, and it is very important to me, and I'm excited to be sharing Foldable TM and VKVs TM, but I also know how much I've enjoyed this time at home with my husband, family, friends, and pets. I hope the word "balance" is now part of my vocabulary, and I can achieve a healthy balance of the things I love. Thanks again for your constant support and prayers, and I hope to see you soon.
