Estancia & Statewide Health Info-Impetigo and Staph infections

I received this from another mom and if you google Staph infections in New Mexico you will come up with some information on which schools have had issues....there is always something especially with large bodies of people but at least now you all know! You can also check the CDC's site for New Mexico and track flu season also www.cdc.gov . --Tabbi

Dozens of children are infected with impetigo, a skin infection that spreads quickly, especially among young children.

The infection is characterized by pus-filled sores around the nose and mouth. The disease can also spread to the hands and arms.

"It normally is found on our own skin, and when you get a break in the skin's surface, then it has an opportunity to set up housekeeping and go on to cause an infection," said Dr. Linda Stonger, who is treating the cases in Estancia.
