UNM ART MUSEUM GUEST LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING

Tuesday, October 30, 5:30 p.m.

Joseph Traugott, Ph.D.
"How IS the West One?"

Joesph Traugott, curator of 20th century art at the Museum of Fine Arts,
Santa Fe, will discuss his recently published book The Art of New
Mexico-How the West is One.

Traugott will lecture and show slides from the Museum of Fine Arts
permanent collection, followed by a book signing. The 225 selected works
demonstrate the extent to which Native American, Hispanic, and
European-American aesthetic traditions have always been intertwined in
Southwest art. The one-ness of New Mexico art is the unique, unpredictable,
often contradictory unity that developed from these cultural interactions.

The Art of New Mexico-How the West is One examines the impact of New Mexico
art from the 1880's to the present. Works by such artists as Gustave
Baumann, Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Andrew Dasburg, and Agnes
Martin are showcased.
