Myicourse - free online course delivery system
MyiCourse is a free, easy to use, online course management site that
allows the site owner to construct online courses and tests. The
Myicourse sites can be either public or private. Private sites only
allow entry of students that have been preregistered by the site owner
and their courses are not available to others. We believe there is a
tremendous need for on-line teaching of all subjects and we have
eliminated the barriers to use for everyone.
The mission of Myicourse is to provide software that helps users
create and post their own educational materials, at no cost. We do not
believe all of life's necessary learning is contained within the walls
of universities or between the binders of books. We want to
democratize knowledge for those who wish to learn. Come help us
flatten the world!
We are Internet users just like you. We believe in the Internet and
the potential it holds for the world. We believe in the spirit that
continues to drive the Internet; open, unfettered access for everyone.
We believe in personal knowledge and the wisdom of the ages. We do not
believe all of the life's necessary knowledge and wisdom is contained
within the walls of universities or between the binders of books. In
essence we believe in you!
We agree with Twain who said, "I never let my schooling interfere
with my education." In the spirit of Craig's List, we are providing
our platforms free of charge. There are no gimmicks or hidden charges.
Really, it is totally free! We hate pop-up ads. If you want to
advertise via banner ads, we ask for a nominal monthly fee of $15 per
month. If you decide not to advertise with your own banner ads, the
platforms, usage and bandwidth are free. In short, we believe our
mission is to provide software to the world that helps users create
and post their own educational materials, at no cost. We want to
democratize knowledge for those who wish to learn. Come help us
"flatten the world." http://myicourse. com/

I tentatively created a University of LIFE on Myicourse
(http://universityof life.myicourse. com/). And I stuck a rudimentary
Earth Science unit up on it as a (partial) sample course.
It is very easy to use and if anyone would like to try to create some
online course content for our homeschool community, or if you already
have some you've been administering some other way and you'd like to
try using Myicourse, let me know.
I'm still learning the ropes with it, but it's easy to add "faculty"
to it. Courses can be as long or as short as you like. Ideally, I'd
like to keep them free, but may consider low cost courses in the future.
Anyway, if you'd like to try your hand at it, let me know! Of course,
you can also go create your own "college", but it might be fun to just
create classes for ourselves.
Have fun!

learning more about the following new products
or attending the Academy sessions.
NEW PRODUCTS:
Equivalency Flips: EF-1 to EF-18
I have designed this new product so that one sheet of colored 8.5" x 11" paper folds to teach multiple equivalencies. Equivalency Flips teach fractions, decimals, percentages, time, money, seasons, meters, kilometers, miles, yards, liters, gallons, cups, and more. Each packet contains a classroom set of 12 identical die-cut color sheets with full-color instructions, or you can order a custom packet of 6 and 6, or a mixed set of one of each of the 16 different equivalencies.
Shipping Status: This product is in our warehouse and ready to ship immediately.
(Listed at the end of the "Order on Line" link at my web-site www.dinah.com.)
Foldables and VKVs for Phonics, Spelling, and Vocabulary: PreK-2nd As many of you know, I've been working on this 320-page book for years, and I am so happy to announce that it is finally ready! It is filled with over 1,000 color photographs illustrating how to make and use my newest series of folds called VKVs (visual kinesthetic vocabulary) and my Foldables to teach rimes, onsets, antonyms, analogies, homographs, homophones, dictionary skills, syllables, prefixes, suffixes, root words, and more. The book also contains extensive word lists, lots of organization hints, and photographic instructions for book binding and making Foldables "grow."
Shipping Status: This book is at press so you can place orders now, and we will ship it as soon as it arrives in our warehouse.
(Listed at the end of the "Order on Line" link at my web-site www.dinah.com.)
We will send you e-group notices when the following are ready:
Foldables and VKVs for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling: 3rd-6th -- Spring 2008
Foldables and VKVs for Vocabulary, Spelling, and Test Prep: Middle School and High School -- Summer 2008
Foldables and VKVs for Grammar: Primary to Advanced Levels -- Fall 2008
Grammar Study Flips: MS, HS, and College Review SF 101
(EL level will be available soon!)
Study Flips is a new product line developed to turn one sheet of paper into a multi-layered, visually organized, kinesthetic study aid.
The first product in this series is for secondary grammar, and it features 20 duplicable sheets for individual student use, and 20 heavy-weight sheets for teacher/classroom use. Once the 20 heavy-weight, color-coded sheets are constructed, they can be used for years as study aids during class discussions, student writing activities, and test preparation. Example Grammar Study Flip titles include: Linking Verbs; Verbs: Conjugation and Tenses; Pronouns: Possessive vs. Contractions; Pronouns:Classes; Prepositions; Noun Cases; Nouns: Four Properties; Conjunctions: Subordinating; Conjunctions: Coordinating; Adverbs: Positive, Comparative, Superlative; Adjectives; Interjections; and more.
Shipping Status: This product is at press so you can place orders now, and we will ship it as soon as it arrives in our warehouse.
(Listed at the end of the "Order on Line" link at my web-site www.dinah.com.)
Dual-Cut Scissors: CCC95 $14.00 (See the "Order on Line" link at my web site, www.dinah.com .)
Dual-cut scissors cut twice in one stroke. Young children with small fingers and poor fine-motor skills can lift tabs easier if there is space between them. I used to create this space by making two cuts -- one on each side of a fold line -- every time I made a VKV or Foldable. These scissors do it all at once. They work especially well with index-weight paper and poster board.
Shipping Status: This product is ready to ship immediately.

Impt Message from from the New Mexico Homeschool Community!!
Creating this network is a great thing and it will continue to be a great resource but I am going to put some parameters on it to protect myself and my family from becoming second place in my life and burning out! I have been tracking my hours and I am putting in over 40 hours a week just on this network....a worthy cause YES but I have come to realize that this is taking a toll on just general life and I need to make sure that I have my priorities straight....meaning family is first! And by setting limits and getting volunteers I think this can grow to become an even greater resource for our community!
I will send emails out Monday, Wednesday and Friday before 8AM ONLY.
If you have something that needs to be sent out that day you will have to call me and let me know but consider whether or not it can wait until the next time I send out emails. (505) 792-4110
I need volunteers willing to go to Title Wave Books and run some of the meetings, basically they are informal forums for discussion and sharing of materials so you do not have to actually 'run' the meeting. I will give business cards with my info to the person running the meeting so that if there are questions they can be researched at the blog later! Our next topic is ""English Grammar and Language"".
The fair will take place ONLY once a year in late May/early June--dates to be forthcoming as I get the facility!
I am researching running a chat room where we can discuss topics with our network from anywhere there is access to the internet so that we can truly be a New Mexico Home School community and not just serve those in the Albuquerque Area. I will need a volunteer to run some of these also!!
A huge thanks to the volunteers that are helping out already, your work and time are extremely valuable and you are very appreciated!
We still need a Legislative Team!!! THIS IS A VERY IMPT AND VERY NEEDED POSITION!!!
Volunteer to help with the website!!
Volunteer to contact entities and resources around the state to let them know about our network!
Consider volunteering at the next fair to be held in May/June 2008 I will need help at the entrance table and I will also need help prior to the fair with organizing duties of the various entities attending!
I wish I had not for profit status but right now that is not economically feasible but I am planning in the Spring to get started on the process! This is only a wish list and I am grateful for whatever help I get in whatever form!
Two tall filing cabinets with the ability to use hanging files or the regular kind
*********Working Laptop w/ at least Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating System and modem**************
THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR COMING TOGETHER AND PROVING THAT WE ARE A COMMUNITY OF DIVERSITY BUT UNITED BY OUR DECISION TO HOMESCHOOL!
I will send emails out Monday, Wednesday and Friday before 8AM ONLY.
If you have something that needs to be sent out that day you will have to call me and let me know but consider whether or not it can wait until the next time I send out emails. (505) 792-4110

Spaceweather: Exploding Comet Update
Last week, Comet 17P/Holmes shocked sky watchers around the world with a sudden million-fold increase in brightness. It literally exploded into view, rapidly becoming a naked eye "star" in the constellation Perseus. Since then the comet has expanded dramatically. It is now physically larger than the planet Jupiter and subtends an angle in the night sky similar to the Moon's Sea of Tranquility, the right eye of the "Man in the Moon." Photographers, this amazing comet is an excellent target for off-the-shelf digital cameras and backyard telescopes. It grows visibly from night to night and no one knows how large it will become. Stay tuned to http://spaceweather.com for sky maps and the latest images.

Webresource: The Exchange: A new blog examining global issues from a youth perspective
The first edition takes a non-partisan look at the 2008 Presidential
Election and what is at stake for children and youth. Articles
include youth viewpoints about national security, the war in Iraq, the
diversity of the presidential candidates, a voter registration guide,
a profile of a standout youth and much more. To learn more, visit
http://www.youthdev elopmentexchange .org
The Exchange is an online supplement to the Youth Development
Exchange, an organization founded by Chiquita S. Williams. This
journal is created and managed by a team of volunteers, from all
fields, who bring their expertise to the site in order to examine
issues that directly impact our youth. We are all deeply concerned
about the future of society and we recognize that children are the key
to preserving that future.
Our goal is to bridge the gap between children's concerns and the
adults who have the ability to address and act on those concerns.
Please join our debates, where you can comment on the articles of the
current issue. Our primary objective is to get you involved in the
issues that matter most.
We are dedicated to our mission and plan to grow quite a bit in
the coming months, adding an event calender and increasing to weekly
content updates. Starting in November, we will update articles each
Monday. Enjoy your stay here and don't forget to join our mailing
list to receive notifications when the site is updated, as well to
participate in pre-issue surveys that will often be included within
articles.
If you have any interest in being a part of The Exchange, please
contact us on the left side of the screen. We are always looking for
new contributers!

Webresource: FreeRice - Improve your vocabulary and do something good at the same
FreeRice
http://www.freerice .com/index. php
FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.
FreeRice has two goals:
1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.
Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor
country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. It is a
great investment in yourself.
Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in
hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive.
Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped
provide. Thank you.
From the FAQ:
Who pays for the donated rice?
The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the
bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for
these companies, but it is also something more. Through their
advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning (free
vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the
hungry). We commend these companies for their participation at FreeRice.
If you have the rice to give, why not give it all away right now?
We are not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 10 grains at a
time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, advertisements
appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these
advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you
generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.
Who distributes the donated rice?
The rice is distributed by the United Nations World Food Program
(WFP). The World Food Program is the world's largest food aid agency,
working with over 1,000 other organizations in over 75 countries. In
addition to providing food, the World Food Program helps hungry people
to become self-reliant so that they escape hunger for good. Wherever
possible, the World Food Program buys food locally to support local
farmers and the local economy. We encourage you to visit the United
Nations World Food Program to learn more about their successful
approach to ending hunger.
Will the rice I donate make a difference?
The rice you donate makes a huge difference to the person who receives
it. To a mother or father watching a loved child die in their arms
from hunger, the rice you donate is more precious than anything in the
world.
What is being done to end world hunger?
There is great progress being made to end world hunger. Many
organizations across the globe are involved in this struggle. Each
day, hundreds of thousands of ordinary men and women work for these
organizations. Through their efforts, millions of impoverished people
are fed, taught skills and given hope for the future.
What else can I do to help end world hunger?
One very important thing you can do to help end hunger is to become
knowledgeable about it. A good way to do this is to visit our sister
site Poverty.com (designed so that busy people can learn quickly about
hunger and poverty) or one of the many excellent sites listed here. We
believe that when enough people around the world become knowledgeable
about hunger, it will no longer be tolerated.

Socorro: The Festival of the Cranes
THE FESTIVAL OF THE CRANES Nov 13-18, 2007 is the 20th year that the City of Socorro, New Mexico and the Bosque del Apache NWR have celebrated the return of the cranes with this festival. We invite you to share it with us.
(You can visit the refuge and the exhibitors this weekend without special registration.)
http://www.friendsofthebosque.org/aboutfestival.html
Education is an important part of the mission of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Throughout the year the Bosque is host to meetings, seminars, international film crews, tours, visits by groups of school children and, in November, the Festival of the Cranes.
There are four major components to the Festival: tours, lectures, exhibits and the Refuge.
Tours:
Tours are offered to introduce you to areas and topics not commonly available during the year. Birders will be out from dawn to dusk on and off of the Bosque. There is even a Birding Tour on Elephant Butte Lake. The management of local National Wildlife Refuges will conduct groups and explain in detail the operation of each refuge. During the Historic Socorro Open House photo galleries and historic buildings will be open for your inspection. New Mexico Tech and the Scientific community will also have displays and tours.
Caution to birders. Read the descriptions carefully - not all tours are for birding.
Lectures:
Lectures are offered for a variety of wildlife related subjects. Most lectures are given at the Macey Center in Socorro. Some lectures are workshops in photography, bird identification and wildlife painting. Workshops are conducted in the field or special facilities.
Exhibits:
On Saturday and most of Sunday the main Promenade, at the Refuge, will be filled with exhibits and demonstrations. This is where you will see animals up close, very close. Animal rescue groups will display mammals and birds along the perimeter of the Promenade. If you ever wanted a full head photo of a Flammulated Owl, this may be your only opportunity.
The Art tent and the Exhibitor tent are both special treats because many local and nationally known artists and artisans have booths with paintings and photographs for sale; and a variety of non-profits and rescue organizations and others have fun and informative exhibits. In the Visitor Center, you will find educational activities as well as items for sale.
Junior Naturalist Tour
10:00 am to Noon Sa95 - $1/10:00 am to Noon Su113 - $1
Bosque del Apache, Bosque del Apache
VERY beginning birders, naturalists, and explorers (ages 5 to 12) are invited to join one of the Bosque del Apache's Naturalists for a special tour of the Refuge. Take a short hike, catch aquatic creatures in the marsh, discover pack rat nest, and see where beavers live. Parents are welcome and must accompany their children (no charge). Offered Saturday and Sunday. Meet in the Visitor Center parking lot.

Hey everyone!
First of all, let me tell you the dates/times for the two TAG meetings in November. (we decided not to have another October meeting due to Halloween)
**TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH - MEETING ROOM 1
4:30-5:15 - Book discussion & checkout (and FOOD!)
5:30-6:00 - DDR in downstairs program room (only for those who attended the meeting!)**
**TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27TH - MEETING ROOM 1
4:30-5:15 - Book discussion & checkout (and FOOD!)
5:30-6:00 - DDR in downstairs program room (only for those who attended the meeting!)**
Now the exciting news about CLUB ANIME! It's now OK for you to bring back the permission slips signed at home!!!! That's right, you don't have to have your parents come in to sign, although that's still totally OK and encouraged. BUT if you bring in a permission slip already signed, make sure your parents know that I will be calling them to discuss Club Anime. That's the exchange: your parents don't have to come in to sign, but they have to speak to me on the phone just so everyone is clear on the rules and requirements. Sound like a pretty good deal? I thought so!! ^___^
That means when you show up for TAG on the 6th you can bring signed permission slips. We already have FIVE and we just need FIFTEEN more to have our first viewing of Tsubasa!! We can do it! We also received our first DVD from Anime ADVocates, which contains two episodes of "Pumpkin Scissors" and one episode of "Yugo the Negotiator." We'll discuss a schedule for screening those too!
So, make sure you forward this e-mail to all your friends who might be interested in either TAG *or* CLUB ANIME and definitely make sure you're at our next meeting. If you have ANY questions or need a permission slip for CLUB ANIME, you can either come in to see me at the library, call me (662-8257) or e-mail me back at this address!
Thanks everyone, can't wait to see you all next time!

These folks asked me to link to their Japanese language program, and
after I looked at it, it seemed to be a good deal.
http://www.yesjapan .com/
It has a low monthly fee, $14.95, so you only need to pay as long as
your child is enthusiastic about learning Japanese.
They have Kanji games, students can instand message each other - in
Japanese. There's teacher support. Anyway, there's not much to find
fault with. They don't pay me for this. (Not all vendors on my site
pay to be there.)

Online Democratic Schooling, Interested Anyone?
Hi,
i'm wondering if anyone is interested in pursuing the possibility of an
online democratic school. I've worked at an online school for 2 1/2 years. I
would like to discuss this possibility with interested people- parents,
students, possible staff members. I termed it democratic rather than a Sudbury
school because it would be different- no building, etc. But I would like to
keep the democratic foundation, exploring what could be done democratically
online.
Here are some possible ideas:
-National school, but with local groups - the local groups meet in person
periodically and get to know each other (in our school we have monthly field
trips, but I don't know how often these local groups would meet).
-Daily online group meetings- regional, probably, at a time the group agrees
on. There are programs like Elluminate where people can talk by mic, use
webcams if they want, and share a whiteboard and presentations.
-The school would hire experts in areas students are interested in
(decisions made by participants) , and those experts can hold online classes or
tutoring sessions, complete with powerpoints, shared whiteboards, etc. I ve even
been teaching Specail Education online, teaching basic reading, writing, and
math. "Normal" online schools just post reading assignments and tests
online. But ours might have a larger synchronous- (online at the same time)
component - to keep the personal touch available.
-Students could also do their own projects at home and in the community. If
they want help in designing projects or finding resources the school staff
would be available to help and support them. Students could also share
videos, powerpoints, and other results of their projects online to other staff and
students if they wanted to (not mandatory)
Not sure of the ages:Young children probably couldn't supervise themselves
at home alone, so this might be some kind of combo with homeschooling if young
ones were included. But probably by grade 5 or 6 until grade 12 students
could be involved independently
Info meeting online:
I have an "office" on Elluminate through my present online school. I would
like to host an online meeting sometime in October or November for anyone
interested in seeing an online school and discussing this possibility.

UNM ART MUSEUM GUEST LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING
Tuesday, October 30, 5:30 p.m.
Joseph Traugott, Ph.D.
"How IS the West One?"
Joesph Traugott, curator of 20th century art at the Museum of Fine Arts,
Santa Fe, will discuss his recently published book The Art of New
Mexico-How the West is One.
Traugott will lecture and show slides from the Museum of Fine Arts
permanent collection, followed by a book signing. The 225 selected works
demonstrate the extent to which Native American, Hispanic, and
European-American aesthetic traditions have always been intertwined in
Southwest art. The one-ness of New Mexico art is the unique, unpredictable,
often contradictory unity that developed from these cultural interactions.
The Art of New Mexico-How the West is One examines the impact of New Mexico
art from the 1880's to the present. Works by such artists as Gustave
Baumann, Georgia O'Keeffe, Marsden Hartley, Andrew Dasburg, and Agnes
Martin are showcased.

Albuquerque: First Reading for the ALT Studio Series
For immediate release: First Reading for the ALT Studio Series
Albuquerque Little Theatre Presents -
The Studio Series Begins: An Evening of Staged Readings
Saturday November 10, 2007 / 7:00pm
FREE to ALT Subscribers and Ticket-holders OR
5.00 at the door
For more information contact the Box Office: (505) 242-4750 Monday - Friday Noon to 6pm *or*
online at www.albuquerquelittletheatre.org
A reception following the readings will be held upstairs in the San Pasquale Cantina.
Join ALT as they present staged readings of four new works by playwrights from New Mexico and the Four Corners! These fresh, funny and provocative plays have been work-shopped by an ensemble of six of Albuquerque's brightest talents including Robert Barnes, John Hardman, Benjamin Lieberman, Isabela Montes
Susan Stroupe and Cyndie Suniga. Plays will be presented in a Reader's Theatre format. Included in the evening is an intermission with complementary coffee and cookies and a talk-back with the actors and director. Feedback is absolutely essential to the development of new plays, so patron participation is greatly appreciated! The evening will last approximately two hours.
The Plays and their Authors:
Theatre Arts by Walter L. Newton - A commentary on the art of theatre by two of history's most enigmatic and irritating playwrights.
Holy Couch by Edith Weiss - If Jesus suddenly appeared in your living room, would you offer him a confession or a beer?
Yogurt Security by Robert F. Benjamin and Elaine Jarvik - Should Gloria and Henry "slurp it or chuck it"? The paradoxes of aging and airport screenings.
At The Far End Of The Garden by Scott Gibson - Three strangers snowed-in at a bus depot. And a mysterious town that doesn't want them to leave.
What is the Studio Series?
The Albuquerque Little Theatre has included in its offerings a program devoted to the workshop and performance of new dramatic work. Staged readings of new works will be presented throughout the 2007-08 Season at ALT: Free to subscribers and ALT ticket holder OR $5.00 General Admission at the door. ALT's goal is to offer new playwrights an opportunity to hear and see their work for further development, to provide actors with a unique experience in developing a character from the ground up in collaboration with the playwrights, and to present to ALT patrons a new experience: Being part of the process that goes into developing a show from the beginning. Audience members as well as directors, actors and playwrights are encouraged to express their opinions and ideas in a talk-back session following the readings. Ideally, the Studio Series will become a platform for playwrights to develop their work into fully presented productions.
For more information or to set up interviews with the playwrights / cast please contact the director: Theresa Reid at (505) 242-4750 or TReid@swcp.com

P.S. Our mail-in math competitions that you administer at your school
are a great way to recruit students and prepare them for face-to-face
contests like those above. We have four competitions remaining this
year, each with a fifty-dollar registration fee that allows unlimited
participation by students at your school: the 2007 Team Scramble on
November 1st, the 2007 Ciphering Time Trials on December 13th, the
2008 Four-by-Four Competition on January 31st, and the 2008
Collaborative Problem-Solving Contest beginning April 2nd. Register
for any of these contests online at
http://www.natassessment.com/reg_form.htm.
P.P.S. The questions for the second round of the United States of
America Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS) are available at
http://www.usamts.org/Tests/USAMTSProblems_19_2.pdf. Solutions to
these questions are due by November 19th, 2007. The USAMTS
competition is a fantastic mathematical experience for advanced high
school mathematicians, and is free! Students work on their own so
that no coach involvement is necessary other than initially directing
them to the website (http://www.usamts.org). Although the first round
of the USAMTS competition is over, students can earn recognition in
each round; students can start the competition now and still be
motivated by the prospect of receiving awards. We (NA&T) do not
administer this competition, we're just fans; inquiries should be
directed to usamts@usamts.org.

Albuquerque: High School student interested in Service Academies?
What Does It Take To Become A Midshipman? How Does The Admissions Process Work?
There has been a lot of success lately with home schooled kids gaining admission into service academies.
This session will be held on Sunday, October 28th from 2-4 p.m. at Cibola High School Performing Arts Center. The session is being led by one of the four regional admissions officers at Annapolis. LT Dan Doyle is our regional director for the Western half of the United States. It is rare that we see a regional director in Albuquerque. Meet Academy Admissions officers; find out how the application process works; learn about the exciting careers post-graduation; see and hear from the people who have experienced it; get some free USNA gifts. See attachment for more information.

-Spaceweather: Erupting Comet
Space Weather News for Oct. 24, 2007
http://spaceweather.com
ERUPTING COMET: Astronomers in Japan and Europe report that Comet 17P/Holmes is undergoing a spectacular eruption. The 17th-magnitude comet has brightened by a factor of five hundred thousand or more during the past 24 hours becoming a naked eye object in the evening sky. This may signify a breakup of the comet's core or a rich vein of ice suddenly exposed to sunlight--no one knows. Look for a yellow 2.5th-magnitude fuzzball in the constellation Perseus after sunset. ("2.5th magnitude" means a little dimmer than the stars of the Big Dipper.) At present the comet looks more like a star than a comet; it does not have a discernable tail, but it might grow one as the outburst continues. Visit http://spaceweather.com for a sky map, photos and updates.

Environment Education Day
The Southside Branch of the Santa Fe Public Library, 6599 Jaguar Drive, will host an Environment Education Day on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., featuring activities for all ages, including hands on solar displays, climate-related short plays, “An Inconvenient Truth” slide show, displays and music. Tours of the Southside Branch, the greenest public building in Santa Fe, will take place hourly.
A ribbon cutting will be held at 11 a.m. for a collection of library environmental books and materials, which focus on the newly changing aspects of our natural environment. The environmental education resource collection will be available year round for individual and student use. Materials are from the Southside Library collection, which will be supplemented by public donation of funds for new materials.
The Sierra Club will sponsor a CFL light bulb exchange, replacing energy-wasting incandescent light bulbs, starting at 12 noon. Approximately 2,000 light bulbs, up to 4 per household, will be traded out. The ATC marimba band will also play at noon.
At 3 p.m. Dr. Camilla Bustamante will speak on “Planning a Sustainable Santa Fe.”
The Opening is also a part of the national StepItUp 2 event. For more information call (505) 955-2828 or (505) 466-4724.

Los Alamos:LA Cafe Scientifique
If any of you know other young adults interested in being on the
leadership team for the LA Cafe Scientifique, please tell them we are
having our next meeting this Thursday. We will meet during the LAHS
lunch period from 12:40-1:20 at UNM-LA Bldg 2 in the Student Government room.
I will have pizza for them. The leadership team is open to any interested youth aged 14-18 as are all of our Cafe meetings.
At the meeting, we will learn to use our new networking application.
The tool will help us develop blogs to discuss cafe topics, plan meetings
and other activities, and make new friends with people in the cafe programs
across the state. We will also begin planning for a joint leadership
training to be held on either Nov 17 or Nov 18, depending on youth
commitments.
You can check it out at www.scieds.com/elgg. The discussions among the
youth are open for public viewing, once we get started.
Current YLT members include: Benigno Sandoval, Thomas and Rob Lebrun,
Darrell Beckman, Seth Holsapple, Cameron Baier, Brad Lungstrom, Arthur
Mitchell, Kyle Mooday and Mathew Flores. We desperately need some
additional girls to sign on. In Espanola, I have 15 girls and 2 boys
for their YLT. Not sure what is causing these imbalances in gender on the
teams.
Other tidbits - one does not have to be on the leadership team to
participate in the Cafe. All Cafe meetings are open to anyone aged
14-18. We plan to have our first Cafe presentation in January. We are
struggling to pick an evening with the fewest number of conflicts so that most
kids can attend if interested. If you have suggestions, preferences or
guidance on the day that has the least after school/evening conflicts, I am
interested.
Thanks for your continued support of the Cafe Scientifique program,
Michelle

Dear Albuquerque Home Learners,
Free World U is a non-profit organization that provides a free education
to anyone with Internet access. Our students tell us that they are able
to learn six hours worth of lessons in only half an hour.
This is possible because of the discovery that all knowledge, whether it
be math, social studies, English, or science, is reducible to tiny fact
units. The human brain does not assimilate entire books and lectures.
Rather, it has to translate these into fact units. If the information is
translated beforehand, the process moves dramatically faster.
First of all, we define the entire state-mandated pre-K-12 curriculum.
Next we break it down into fact units, numbering in the hundreds of
thousands, organized in a logical sequence. We then convert each fact
unit into a question and answer pair. We combine each question and
answer pair with an illustration and place it on a flashcard
accessible
by the Internet.
As students study the flashcards, they have the ability to eliminate the
ones that they have mastered. The system remembers every student and the
status of every fact unit that that student has encountered.
Students are able to be absolutely certain that they have mastered all
of the material. The flashcards are so simply written that even students
with learning disabilities find them easy to follow.
Students do not need to purchase any books or supplies to learn with the
system. The cost of homeschooling is eliminated. The burden on
homeschooling parents is drastically reduced. You can watch a movie
demonstrating the system by clicking here:

Space Weather News for Oct. 23, 2007
http://spaceweather.com
BIG FULL MOON: This week's full Moon (Oct. 25-26) is the biggest full Moon of 2007. It's no illusion. Some full Moons are genuinely larger than others and Thursday night's will be as much as 14% wider and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons we've seen earlier this year. Check http://spaceweather.com for the reasons why.
SPACESHIP SIGHTINGS: Space shuttle Discovery launched this morning from NASA's Kennedy Space Center on a two-week mission to the International Space Station (ISS). This means sky watchers should be alert for spaceship flybys in the nights ahead. Both Discovery and ISS will make favorable passes over many US cities with the possibility of double flybys later this week when the two spacecraft are about to dock. Subscribers to Spaceweather PHONE (http://spaceweatherphone.com) will receive email and telephone alerts of flybys in viewing range of their hometowns.
