Albuquerque: Open Space Visitor Center: UPCOMING EVENTS

All events take place at the Open Space Visitor Center located at 6500 Coors Blvd. NW between Montano Rd. and Paseo del Norte at the end of Bosque Meadows Road. Programs are free unless otherwise noted. Call 505.897.8831 for more information.

ONGOING
Traditional Demonstration Garden

Help cultivate a demonstration garden that represents several early farming methods and the foods that were collected and cultivated in New Mexico. This is intended to be an educational garden where groups can actively take part in its development and observe its successes and failures. Farming methods that will be represented are terraced arroyo, waffle garden, cobble mulch garden, and orchards. Projects will involve preparing garden areas, planting, mulching, weeding, watering, harvesting, preparing seeds for storage and more. Volunteers should be at least 14 years old or accompanied by an adult. Participants will need work gloves, sun protection, sturdy shoes and water. Groups up to 10 people welcomed. JUNE
8th Map & Compass for Families
9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Learn how to navigate your way over the landscape the old fashioned way--with a map & compass. Paul Daily will start with a classroom orientation then take you outside to practice Bring your own compass or borrow one from Open Space. This class is free and part of the Open Space Division Summer Series.

14th Two Decades of Protection, 700 Years of History: Celebrating Piedras Marcadas Ancestral Pueblo Village
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
In 1988, the City of Albuquerque purchased one of the largest known ancestral pueblo villages in the Albuquerque area, protecting it from proposed development. To celebrate the anniversary of this important acquisition archaeologist, Dr. Matt Schmader, will interpret and take you on a tour of this once thriving and important community. Bring water and dress appropriately for a short hike. Space is limited, please call 897-8831 to register.

15th Bird Hike in the Bosque
8:00 AM - 11:00 AM
The bosque is home to many species of birds. Naturalist, author, and educator, Verne Huser, will lead you through the bosque to find a variety of these beautiful and interesting creatures. Bring binoculars. This is a free program and part of the Open Space Division Summer Series.

21st Sharing Southwest Stories for Children
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Sharing Southwest Stories for Children explores the world of children’s literature with New Mexico and Southwestern authors. Kathy Warren brings characters of the Southwest to life with her dynamic readings and inspires children to create their own stories in words and pictures. The reading will be followed by a “take home” art activity. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

28th Introduction to Papermaking Workshop
10:00 AM - Noon
Learn the basic steps for making paper from a variety of plants and recycled materials. This class is intended for those with little or no papermaking experience. This is a free workshop. Call 897-8831 to register as space is limited.

JULY
5th Volunteer Training
10:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Open Space Visitor Center Volunteers greet visitors, provide information about the Center and the greater Open Space system, and help in areas that suit their interests such as education, gardening, and special events. The training will cover Open Space history and geography, volunteer responsibilities, and a tour of the facility. Call 897-8831 to register.

12th Advanced Nature Journaling
9:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Learn how to take your nature journaling to a new level with Margy O’Brien. O’Brien will help you deepen your power of expression by using color. You will need a blank sketch book of your choice, pencils and any art supplies you enjoy using. Please prepare for the outdoors and bring sun protection, water and a portable stool or blanket for your comfort. Workshop fee is $15.00 per person. Space is limited to 20 people, 10 years old and above. Call 897-8831 to register.
