HSer Scholarship Opportunity-Essay Writing, Jr/Sr High School Level

RE: Spring 2008 PLEC Student Essay Contest

Dear New Mexico Homeschool Group Leaders:

The Public Legal Education Committee (PLEC) of the State Bar of New Mexico is beginning its promotion of the state-wide 11th Annual Essay Writing Contest. For the first time, the contest will include homeschool students. As a former homeschooled student, I am very excited about the new direction that this program is taking. This is a great way for local homeschoolers to advance their writing skills and gain recognition as high achieving youth.

The PLEC Student Essay Contest is for all students whether or not they are interested in pursuing law in their future. It is open to all high school juniors and seniors. Legal knowledge or experience is not required for students to participate. Contestants will be given a legal scenario and supporting laws or documents to answer a specific question focused around a certain topic. PLEC will provide detailed guidelines and instructions regarding how to write the legal essay. Elizabeth Collard, a member of PLEC and the Executive Director of the NM Guardianship Project at Advocacy Inc., is available upon request to speak with your group in person about the contest.

The question will be distributed with an instructional packet to local schools and homeschool groups in January. The essay deadline will be in March and members of PLEC, along with several NM District Court judges, will judge the essays. The winners will be announced publicly on May 1st which is Law Day. The first prize winner will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship, the second prize winner will receive a $500 cash scholarship, and the third prize winner will receive a $250 cash scholarship.

The contest provides students with a way to challenge themselves and expand their overall knowledge. It is also an opportunity for students to participate in competitive scholastic programs that are often unavailable to homeschooled students. I encourage you to present this opportunity to your group and pass this along to any other local homeschool group of which you are aware. I am in the process of gathering a list of how many homeschool groups and students will be interested in participating in the contest. Please contact me if you are interested and would like to receive the instructional entry packet.

Sincerely,

Dee Baker
