February 2008 Air Notes - Cellular Phones and Driving Don't Mix

Happy Early Valentine's Day All!

This month's Air Notes focuses on an annoying and dangerous activity. Yes, you've seen those annoying drivers talking on their cell phone. Its a growing epidemic! It's not that I don't like cell phones. I (along with millions of other citizens) enjoy and frequently use my own personal cell phone. But driving / texting / talking are unnecessary and hazardous activities, even with hands free devices.

Why you might ask? A recent story in the news discussed an astounding university study that documented the loss of attention of drivers on highways and busy streets; distraction caused by cell phones. Haven't you been exasperated by these drivers who are talking or texting while you are trying to safely get somewhere on time. This unnecessary and detrimental delay is costing us valuable resources.

Here is the link to our source of important information from a study conducted by the University of Utah for the annual meeting of Transportation Research; an agency of the National Academies, parent organization of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and Institute of Medicine. http://unews.utah.edu/p/?r=121907-2
I congratulate and thank those academics that conducted this study. Hopefully the fruit of their labor improves the situation often seen on our transportation systems.

Please share this information with others. It is an important concern related to traffic safety, fuel conservation, public health and air quality.

Thank you!
