Poetry Gatherings

Mesa Public Library is pleased to host Poetry Gatherings, a series of evening poetry readings. The readings take place on the second Thursday of each month in the Upstairs Rotunda at Mesa Public Library starting at 6:30 PM. Anyone, of any age, who is interested in poetry and would like to experience listening to or reading poetry aloud, may join us to read their own poetry, read works of their favorite authors, or just to listen.

Jane Lin and Susan Hazen-Hammond, both local poets, will be present to organize the readings. The Library is very pleased to continue this series, additionally providing materials from the collections, including audiotapes of poets reading original work, references, and suggestions for further reading.

Jane Lin teaches poetry writing at UNM-Los Alamos and is at work on a first book manuscript. Born and raised in New York, she studied under Denise Levertov at Stanford University and received her MFA from NYU where she was a New York Times Fellow. Since settling in Los Alamos in 1998, Jane encourages local poets by co-organizing the monthly Poetry Gatherings at Mesa Public Library and maintaining the Nuclear Poets mailing list of local poetry events (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nuclearpoets/). In her secret identity, she develops 3D graphics software for Darkling Simulations where she is affectionately known as the code poet. Her poems have appeared in Five Points, Washington Square, RATTLE, and Harwood Anthology.

Susan Hazen-Hammond is the author of nine books, including "Spider Woman's Web," "Thunder Bear and Ko" and "Timelines of Native American History" (these three were all published by Penguin Putnam). She writes poetry in English and in Spanish, and has had about 100 poems published. In English her poems appear in a wide range of literary journals, from Confrontation (published by Long Island University) to South Dakota Review (published by the University of South Dakota). They also appear in several anthologies, including the fine new Harwood Anthology. La Herencia del Norte publishes most of my Spanish poems. Awards include A South Carolina Book Award, a Benjamin Franklin Award, and, in Mexico, El primer premio nacional de periodismo. She has lived in Santa Fe for 21 years before moving to White Rock in 2001. Susan is semi-retired, but has also had a busy career as a photographer; she notes, "My most illustrious moment as a photographer was the choice of my photograph of
the Mision Convento in Espanola to appear on a U.S. postage stamp."

Come and enjoy an evening of poetry or call Mesa Public Library at 662-8240 for more information.
