Blog: HSLDA Reaching Beyond Homeschooling

This was sent to me and so it might be of interest to some families.--Tabbi

The Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) describes itself as “a nonprofit national membership organization of families who homeschool their children. “ Through their Federal Relations Department (formerly known as the National Center for Home Education) they profess to “serve as a “watchdog” on federal bills and lobbying for pro-home school and parents rights bills” among other things.

Quite often, however, the bills they’re watching and rallying their religiously conservative homeschool troops to support or oppose have little, if anything, to do with home education. UU Homeschoolers, a 930 member national homeschool support group, issued a statement of concern in 2004 regarding HSLDAs over-reaching efforts , outlining some of what they felt were HSLDAs most egregious stances:
“… not only does HSLDA refuse to represent and defend homeschoolers paying for its services on specific, clearly homeschool-related issues, but it has arrogated to itself the nebulously-defined stance of Defender of Homeschooling by taking positions on *non*-homeschool related civil rights issues, including opposition to gay parenting and in support of the federal marriage amendment.
