Dear Math Enthusiast,
For those of you coaching students below 9th grade, we highly
recommend you participate in the MathCounts program, founded by the
National Society of Professional Engineers. National Assessment &
Testing believes the MathCounts program to be of very high quality,
and an excellent opportunity for your advanced students.
Registering for MathCounts results in your school receiving a School
Competition Kit, which includes instructions, the school competition
test, an answer key, recognition ribbons, and student participation
certificates. You will also receive the "MathCounts News"
publication, and you will be able to send up to eight students to
your local competition. MathCounts competitions consist of a Sprint
Round of 30 questions to be answered by an individual in 40 minutes,
a Target Round of four rounds in which individuals have six minutes
to solve two problems, a Team Round in which teams of four cooperate
to solve ten problems in twenty minutes, and a Countdown Round in
which pairs of students compete against one another and the clock to
solve problems. The Target and Team Rounds are the only ones that
allow the use of a calculator. High-scoring teams and individuals at
the local contest may advance to state and national competitions. The
MathCounts program allows participation by up to eight students from
your school, at a cost of ten dollars per student. You can learn more
about this contest at http://www.mathcounts.org and register online at
https://secure1.isproductions.net/mathcounts/webforms/registration0708.html
by December 8th at the latest.
Thank you,
