HSers in the News: Joshua Ward, 1st Place (3rd Grade Div) Reading Rainbow Competition in NM!!

Absolutely amazing what our kids are capable of and what they accomplish! Congratulation to Joshua for his winning entry to the Reading Rainbow contest! He joins Natalie Chambers-who took 2nd place in the same division- as another homeschooler from our community successfully doing what they love! Congratulations to both of you...and if you are a paren who has news of your child's success please email me at NMHomeschoolCommunity@gmail.com and check out the website for pictures www.NewMexicoHomeSchoolCommunity.com

Have fun homeschooling, Tabbi

My son Joshua Ward, won 1st place in the 3rd grade division of Reading Rainbow competition for NM. This is the second year in a row for his book to go on to the national level so we are of course, ecstatic and hoping for a good showing there.

Joshua's book is entitled The Magical Pencil. It is about the hopeful wishes of a boy who doesn't want to do his school work and the lesson he learned from a magical pencil.

Joshua's book was one of 300 entries throughout the state of NM. Each book had to be at least 350 original words with 5 original illustrations. The first place winners of Reading Rainbow go on to the National competition where they are judged against all the state winners including the U.S. territories and Canada. You will be able to see him reading his book on KNME later this summer.

This link includes him reading last years 2007 winning entry for NM:

Joshua is 8 years old, has been homeschooled his entire life, loves drawing, playing soccer, and just being a BOY! His mother entered him in this competition because of the resistance to homeschool due to Spring Fever. We never thought he would win, let alone 2 years in a row!
