Margaret Randall, Stones Witness (U of Arizona, $25.00)
Susan Sherman, America's Child: A Woman's Journey Through the Radical Sixties (Curbstone, $15.00)

A Conversation with Two Woman Activists

Widely known as an author, activist, oral historian, photographer, translator, and teacher, Margaret Randall has dedicated her efforts globally to achieving social and environmental change. A fluid and provocative collection of poetry, prose, and photographs, Stones Witness is in part an account of this extraordinary woman's radically committed and inventive life.

In her book, poet and playwright Susan Sherman revisits her 20s in Berkeley and New York City when she emerged as a lesbian, antiwar activist and artist in her own right. America's Child is the story of her journey as a child of first-generation immigrant parents from a working-class neighborhood through her life, including the turbulence of the sixties.

These two fascinating women will discuss their books and their lives of activism.

Andres Resendez
A Land So Strange: The Epic Journey of Cabeza de Vaca: The Extraordinary Tale of a Shipwrecked Spaniard Who Walked Across America in the Sixteenth Century (Basic Books, $26.95)

In 1528, 300 Spanish conquistadores embarked on the ambitious mission of colonizing Florida, but were believed to have all disappeared. Four of them survived, however, including the famous Cabeza de Vaca. Their march across Florida, their voyage on spindly rafts across the Gulf of Mexico, their captivity in Texas and their trek across the southwest (including exploration of New Mexico!) to the Pacific coast form the backbone of Reséndez's riveting account of the epic journey. The author, a history professor at the University of California-Davis, tells the tale from the Spanish, African and Indian points of view.

Michael McGarrity
Death Song (Penguin, $24.95)
His newest New Mexico Thriller!

Michael McGarrity's eleventh novel in the acclaimed Kevin Kerney series demonstrates McGarrity's rich, personal knowledge of police work on every page, and his stunning visual sense of place in the vast New Mexico landscape. The plot follows the killing of a deputy sheriff in Lincoln County and the brutal murder of the deputy's wife in Santa Fe which bring Police Chief Kevin Kerney and his Mescalero Apache son, Sergeant Clayton Istee, back together in a double homicide investigation-an investigation that is soon linked to a major drug trafficking scheme and the cold-blooded slaughter of two women in Albuquerque. With few clues, no known motives, and no suspects, the investigation turns into a search for the son of the slain officer, eighteen-year-old Brian Riley, who left Santa Fe under suspicious circumstances before his father's death. Fast paced and thrilling as readers have come to expect from McGarrity!

Michael Carroll
The Mindful Leader: Ten Principles for Bringing Out the Best in Ourselves and Others (Shambala, $23.95)
Workshop on Mindfulness in the New Year

While most business books focus on how readers can do more, better and faster, this welcome addition is about taking a moment to pause and reflect. Carroll, the author of Awake at Work and a Buddhist-trained HR executive with many years of experience in both the corporate and Zen worlds, emphasizes the renewal and perspective that can result from taking time out. He addresses issues like developing openness and breaking out of routine, and a series of short descriptions of The Ten Talents of a Mindful Leader includes poise, courage, enthusiasm and awareness. After suggesting some practical ways to test these leadership skills, he reviews the basics of meditation, and will give a short presentation on how everyone, from housewife to executive, can apply these mindfulness skills to their own lives.
