In public/private school the 's-word' would mean something much different than it does in the homeschool world. But even though this entry is from 2005 this is a good 'feeling' upon hearing the first question you get after you let on to people that you are homeschooling. In fact I do meet homeschoolers who are somewhat isolated not just conservative Christians but those from the far opposite side of the spectrum in the radical unschooling realm and points in between and that often depends on your definition of isolation. But for the most part the kids I meet are able to hold meaningful conversations and get along with pretty much anybody of any age. Where else can you find a 9yr old being invited to hang out with a group of 12+? Where else can you find class with kids that range in age from 5-15. And for kids in school settings isn't placing them within a group of only their peers for 12 years of their lives a type of isolation in itself? Have fun with your kids and be empowered about your educational choice, it is our freedom--Tabbi

Now more frequently asked with genuine interest (perhaps your interlocutor is considering homeschooling), occasionally with genuine concern for your children's wellbeing, irritatingly often with the air of "Here's why what you're doing is so wrong."
