1. New Mexico Home School Fall Family Leadership Retreat
We are moving onward and upward with plans for the 2007 CAPE-NM Leadership Retreat and are excited and looking forward with expectation to hear what the Lord would bring to us through the ministry of Scott Somerville.
We are sending this message as a reminder in the event that you have not made your reservations yet. Once you call and make the reservation with Glorieta, please drop us a note at like@cape-nm.org letting us know who will be attending and the ages of your children so we can be aware of what it will take to facilitate the children’s program. If you have a teen that would like to help out with the children’s program, let us know that as well. Complete registration details are available at: http://www.cape-nm.org/pages/capenm/registerretreat.php
We have negotiated for the very lowest prices that Glorieta will allow. A couple can attend for $160 if all meals are taken in the cafeteria. That’s a pretty reasonable cost for a weekend away. However we realize that this number can go up considerably, especially if you have a large family. In an effort to keep this cost down, CAPE does not charge a registration fee.
There are a few things you can be thinking about:
· Topics for our “Town Hall” discussion. If there is something on your mind pertinent to home education, or family life in general, that you would like to hear different perspectives on, please send us the topic so we can include it .
· It has been suggested that the name “Leadership Retreat” might intimidate folks that would otherwise attend. We would like to hear your suggestions for a more “inviting” name. What do you think about the New Mexico Home School Family Weekend Retreat?
· Please ask the Lord if He would have you help underwrite the cost of this retreat. As mentioned above, CAPE does not charge a fee and are thus trusting the Lord for His provision to cover the costs associated with putting on the Retreat. (Speaker honorarium/travel, children’s program costs, hospitality costs, and etc.)
Thanks again for your friendship and association with CAPE. You and families like you are the reason CAPE exists. We hope to see you in October.
God Bless,
Eugene Like

2. Albuquerque Area* Homeschool Science & Engineering Fair
It’s that time of year again – time to get ready for the Albuquerque Area Homeschool Science & Engineering Fair. This year our fair will be held Friday, January 18th, 2008, at Heights First Church of the Nazarene on Paseo del Norte (between Wyoming and Ventura on the north side of the road – same place that we’ve always held it).
We hope you will consider participating with us. Our fair is open to all homeschoolers from kindergarten through 12th grade. We will have independent judges (no homeschool parents), and awards will go to the top three projects in the junior division (grades 6 – 8), and the top three projects in the senior division (grades 9 – 12). Children participating at the elementary level (grades K – 5) will be judged and will receive awards. Also, an overall, best-in-show award will be presented.
We’d really like to have anyone, grades kindergarten through 12th, participate and will help in any way we can. If your child has any question(s) concerning their ideas, project, methodology, analysis, etc., please don’t hesitate to have them email (hallen@swcp.com) or call (821-3612). In a few minutes we might save them hours of time, especially if they’re stuck. Also, if you’re participating in another groups’ science fair, you’re welcome to ask questions of us, share any information we provide with others, and we’d love to have you come see our fair.
We have a Scientific Review Committee (SRC) set up for the purpose of reviewing protocols. If you, or anyone you know, is conducting a study requiring an SRC review, whether you’re participating in our fair or not, you’re welcome to use our SRC.
Last year we sent 6 students on to the regional fair. This year we hope to increase that number. This year, like last, we will pay the entry fee for all students going on to the regional fair. And this year our fair entry fee has been reduced slightly. Note that the name of the regional fair has changed. It is now called the Central New Mexico Science & Engineering Research Challenge.
I will be sending out several emails with attachments that you might find helpful. These attachments have been provided by the Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM) Education Outreach Program at the University of New Mexico. Email Heather to receive future updates and attachments. The new STEM website can be found at: http://www.unm.edu/~scifair/
I hope this information helps you as you get started. If you find that these attachments, or any information that I distribute concerning the science fair might be of use to others, please don’t hesitate to forward it on to them for their use. Or, better yet, invite them to join with us this year.
Attached please find our Albuquerque Area Homeschool Science & Engineering Fair entry forms** and project schedule.**
We hope to see you at this year’s Albuquerque Area Homeschool Science & Engineering Fair,
Heather W. Allen

*Albuquerque Area – This refers to the location of the fair, but is not intended to limit anyone’s involvement. If you want to have a local or regional fair and send a representative, that would be great. Individual entries from anywhere in New Mexico are also welcome!
**Attachments are available!
The CAPE list sends to over 1000 home educating families, so we have opted NOT to include the attachments. If you would like to receive any or all, just “Reply” with your request, and we will be happy to oblige!
