-Albuquerque: Math/Science/PE @ NE Heights CC

Beginning November 1st we will be holding Math/Science (alternating from week to week) and PE Classes at Heights Community Center on Thursdays (with the 3rd Thursday of each month off, and meeting only once-on the 6th-in December) at Heights Community Center from 10-1. We will start with Science and PE on the 1st, and the following week will be Math and PE. From 10:00 to 11:20 grades K-3 will participate in Math or Science, depending on the week, while grades 4-6 participate in PE in the gym. From 11:20-11:40 we will break for lunch…bring your own. From 11:40-1:00 grades K-3 will participate in PE in the gym while grades 4-6 participate in Math or Science, depending on the week.

However, the first week will be an exception to this. For the first week only, PreK-1 will participate in the KNME Healthy Habits program for their science class. Grades 2-6 will participate together in PE and science for that one week. The Healthy Habits program is geared for younger children, and there is a maximum of 20 students…there is space for 10 more in the KNME class.

For ongoing class participation we still have plenty of space…It is only for the KNME class that space becoming limited.

Class Details:

Math

For Math, the children will have the opportunity to participate in various math centers organized by Lyndi Spears who has lots of experience tutoring children of various ages in Math. They will be mostly Montessori based. To help with the cost of materials, there will be a $5 fee per child for the session, which will run through the end of this school year.

She plans to introduce the children to the following concepts, adapting as needed to fit the needs of the children in the classes:

Counting

Recognizing and writing numerals

Simple and dynamic addition

Simple and dynamic subtraction

Simple and dynamic multiplication

Simple and dynamic distributive division

Group division

Fractions - identification and nomenclature (we can do addition and subtraction, multiplication and division too but this is not usually in the curriculum for this age group)

Squares of numbers

Cubes of numbers

Introduction to the binomial cube

Geometric forms: circles; triangles; quadrilaterals; polygons; irregular figures

Geometric solids

Science

The Science Classes will be taught through a parent cooperative. Those with students participating will need to be willing to take turns teaching. You can plan something that can be geared down for the K-3 level and geared up for the 4-6 level, using the same concepts for each age group and just tweaking it a bit to fit the different development levels. Or, if you really want to do double preparation, you can prepare a separate lesson for each age group.

I have a number of science kits that I picked up while picking up textbooks. They are part of my motivation for running these classes…to maximize the number of students who can benefit from these kits. I will post a list of the kits I have within the next couple of days so that those interested can choose from among those themes, if they’d like.

PE

This also will be run though a parent cooperative. There is an equipment closet in the gym full of what you’d need for a wide variety of activities. There is a four square grid on the floor. There is a basketball hoop, but it is standard height…a bit high for the younger kids. There are soccer goals and a volleyball net. There is equipment for motor skills development. As long as we care for the equipment and put it away properly, we are welcome to use all of it.

If you are interested in participating in this essentially free program, please post to this thread http://www.abqhomelearners.org/view_topic.php?id=1703&forum_id=29 on the Albuquerque Home Learners message board. Let us know how many children you will have participating and what grade levels they are in. Please also let us know what dates and in what areas you would like to contribute.

We’re excited, and we hope many of you will be too!
