From the CA Gifted Homeschoolers Yahoo Group:
If you have any budding Woodward & Bernsteins who want a better
insight into the world of journalism, especially on the topic of
ehtics, the Poynter Institute offers a fabulous selection of free
online courses through its "News University" website. They do ask for
a fairly straight-forward registration first, and you can choose
"Teacher, Other" as your profession to be allowed access. Some of the
courses supposedly charge a fee, but all the ones I looked at were
free (thanks to a grant from The Knight Foundation).
I only checked out the Journalism 101 section where there are some
really cool courses including an interactive game (sort of Carmen
Sandiego like) called "Be The Reporter," and more straight-forward
courses on writing headlines, retrieving sensitive information using
the Freedom of Information Act, handling issues involving race and
ethnicity, and even (ugh!) Math for Journalists.
Also, the Poynter Institute's regular website offers tons of info for
anyone interested in the back room of journalism.
