We have not quite finalized our name yet, but we are a group of parents who are working toward starting a Classical Christian school in Albuquerque, to open Fall 2008. We plan to start with K-2nd grade with one or more added grades yearly. The school will focus on a partnership with parents, operating under the “university model”: students will attend 3 days a week, and parents will provide education at home 2 days a week.
Our goal is to support families wishing to educate their children using the Classical model with a Christian emphasis.
“Classical” refers to the use of the method used to educate many of the world’s great thinkers and leaders. The “trivium” is used to capitalize on age-appropriate strengths of students at each phase of development.
* Grammar phase (K-5th grade): emphasizes learning the basic building
blocks and facts needed for further learning. Children love
memorization and soaking up information. Focus is on facts, poems,
vocabulary, math, stories of history and literature, etc
* Logic phase (6-9th grade): The “why and “how” of each subject, at a
time when students are asking these questions. Students study formal
logic to learn how to reason well, to recognize and avoid invalid
arguments, and to organize their arguments in a persuasive manner.
* Rhetoric phase: High school students are taught the art of presentation –both written and spoken. Subjects are taught with an emphasis on learning the art of persuasion and integration based on the knowledge and reasoning developed through their entire course of study.
Latin will be taught as a means to enhance vocabulary, language, and learning skills.
