LIBRARY GOES TO THE DOGS!

Jesse is perhaps an unlikely celebrity, but owner, Theresa McKinney, says “People recognize him everywhere we go! They don’t know me, but they know him!” Jesse likes to visit schools and book stores and now, he is heading for the new Loma Colorado Library in Rio Rancho. Who is Jesse? He is the reading-est dog this side of the Mississippi! Children, with their adult’s permission, can sign up to read with Jesse and Theresa.

Why read to a dog? Dogs are great reading companions, because they listen attentively without judging, rushing, or criticizing the reader. They help the reader relax and just enjoy themselves.

Jesse, and his pal Gracie, and any other dogs (it could be Kaching, Rosie or D.J) who come to the library to read are part of a special national program called R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs). The local group is called TALES of JOY R.E.A.D., and is coordinated by Theresa McKinney. The dogs and their humans undergo extensive training before participating in this special group.

The first fall session will be Saturday, September 8, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm (20 minutes per child) and continue on the second Saturday of every month. For more information, call Youth Services 851-5013, ext 3032.
