Albuquerque: Fractals in the Libraries, and more

Hi everyone - and a big welcome to all the great new people on this list. My goodness, we're up to about 500 "Fractal Foundation Friends" - thank you for your interest and support!

There are several exciting upcoming events I have to share with you this month. First of all, I've been hired by the the City of Albuquerque to give a series of free fractal presentations in the public libraries as part of the summer reading program. (What do fractals have to do with reading you might ask? Well fractals are patterns that tell the stories of the processes that create them; they are the pictures of natural history...) These presentations are particularly aimed at teens, though anyone is welcome and everyone from toddlers to seniors loves fractals. Here are the dates and the library branches where you can come learn about fractals:

East Mountain - June 13 at 2 pm (today!)
Main - June 15 at 1 pm
North Valley - June 20 at 2 pm
Juan Tabo - June 21 at 4 pm
South Valley - June 28 at 1 pm
Taylor Ranch - July 10 at 11am
Cherry Hills - July 11 at 2 pm
Wyoming - July 12 at 3 pm

You can find out more about this and the other great things happening at the library at: http://www.cabq.gov/library/src_events.html

Then, there are going to be an exciting series of outdoor fractal performances in connection with the Summerfest Concert Series. The City of Albuquerque's 1% for the Arts Program has hired me to do fractal shows on Civic Plaza; I'll be projecting giant fractal animations, 60'x40' on the side of the Convention Center. The first show is scheduled for June 23, and will start at about 8:30, as soon as it's dark enough. The music that night will feature Brave Combo, so come on out and dance to the fractals!

For those who want to see a more educational presentation - and are over the age of 50 - the UNM Continuing Education Osher Institute is having me give a lecture on June 27th from 2-3:30. More info at http://dce.unm.edu/Osher/

Finally, an update about our most popular program, First Friday Fractals: The reorganization of the Planetarium is about to begin, and while they will probably NOT be able to accommodate our fulldome fractal shows in July, the Museum is very supportive of fractals and they probably WILL be able to host our shows in August. This is still unofficial, so stay tuned for the official announcement about upcoming fractal shows in the Planetarium.

Thanks so much for your interest, and I hope to see you at a fractal show soon!
