Albuquerque: First Friday Fractals - now THREE shows

Hi everyone, and welcome to a whole bunch of new people on the list this month...

We have a number of exciting announcements to share. First of all, we've added a third show to our First Friday Fractals program, this Friday May 4th at the LodeStar Planetarium. This is in response to the overwhelming turnout we've seen, where we've now sold out all 24 shows in a row! Hopefully this will allow everyone who wants to come to get in this time. BUT - I still recommend calling the Natural History Museum box office starting on Friday morning to reserve your tickets. The number is 841-2869. The shows will now be offered at 6:00, 7:30 and 8:45, and this will be true for the shows on June 1'st as well.

And another fun and exciting announcement: The Fractal Foundation has been awarded a grant from the City of Albuquerque's Urban Enhancement Trust Fund to support our "Albuquerque Fractal Challenge" program. This will allow us to teach thousands more children about the beauty of fractals. It will also pay for the prizes for the Fractal Challenge. The students who create the most interesting and beautiful fractals will have their mathematical artworks reproduced - huge - on billboards and wrapped on the sides of buildings! We'll be using advertising technology to advertise math, science, art, and the creativity of our students. Pretty cool! Learn more about this program - and how you (or your children) can participate. Thank you Albuquerque!

And now for some numbers... we just passed a fun milestone. With the presentation I gave at Enchanted Hills Elementary school in Rio Rancho this morning, we have now taught over 9000 people about fractals and chaos theory. Almost exactly half of that number is children, or 4538. Given that there's about 326,000 students in New Mexico, we're now 1.3% of the way there in our goal to leave no child unfractalled! ;)

And finally, one more fun little note - the Albuquerque Journal is doing a profile of me in the People section of this Friday's paper, and the story should, hopefully, cover fractals and the Fractal Foundation's activities in some detail, so check it out if you get a chance.

Thanks for your interest and support, and I hope to see you one of these days at a fractal show somewhere!
