This class will focus on techniques of comedy acting using improv games and scripted material to create new short plays. We will work as a group on short, pre-written sketches which will serve as a basis for performance, allowing the students to add their own ideas to the material. Using acting, costumes, props and minimal set pieces, the ultimate goal of the class is to incorporate the students' individual ideas and talents into the creation of short comedic plays.
COMEDY WRITING & ACTING with Jason Witter

This class will focus on comedy performance through writing and acting. Using in-class exercises to create short comedic pieces, the students will develop these pieces into performance-ready plays. We will develop the pieces in class using individual and group exercises. The ultimate goal of the class will be to have the students act as writers/actors/directors in order to create a performance-ready comedy show.
IMPROV FOR KIDS with Steve Lucero
Ages 8-14

In this workshop we'll learn the subtle, complex, and hilarious art of improv comedy. Not only is it a skill that can be used onstage, it's something with lessons that you can take everywhere. We'll start with basic rules and teamwork, then we'll move on to short-form games that you might have seen on shows like "Who's Line is it anyway?". You don't have to be funny to take this class, you just have to want to get up and play.
Improv for 15 on up! with Alex Knight
Ages 15+

This course will explore the basics of modern improvisational acting as taught by Viola Spolin, Dell Close, Keith Johnstone, and Augusto Boal. We'll learn the basic rules to Improv performance and move on to ensemble work and short form comedy... oh yeah and play alot.
The Actor's Toolbox with Becca Holmes

A skill building class designed to hone young student's actor's skills; body, voice, imagination, concentration, cooperation, listening, and self-control. This nine-week class utilizes fun games as a vehicle to learning the skills. The class culminates in a game show format presentation for families.
Acting Fundamentals

In this class, students will expand their skills to develop a character and a clear understanding of an actor's objective. The format will include organized improvisation and script work. The class will culminate in a presentation of audition pieces or a short play.

COMEDY THROUGH ART & WRITING with Jason Witter

This class will focus on comedic storytelling through art and writing. We will create short pieces through writing games and artistic exercises. The students will first create characters and then place them into their very own play or short story. This will be followed by individual and group interpretations of these stories. The students will have the option of interpreting their stories through any number of methods including small stage performance, drawing, comic book creation, collages, dioramas, etc. Each student will come away with individual and group interpretations of the comedic stories created through various artistic endeavors in the class.

Meet the Instructors
Jason Witter: Jason Witter received his MFA in Theatre from the University of New Mexico in 2004. He is the founder of the sketch comedy troupe Eat, Drink and Be Larry. Jason has written, produced, directed, taught and performed on stages across Albuquerque. His latest works for young audiences include Captain Hook, BATMAN! and an adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Jason is also in post-production for Hamlet, the Vampire Slayer, his feature film writing/directing/producing debut.
Becca Holmes: Becca earned her BFA from UNM and attended San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre. Her experience includes Associate Artistic Directorship at The Empty Space Theatre in Seattle where she co-founded PATHS, the Space's Education/Outreach program. As the Co-Founder and Vice President of The Children's Museum of Northern Virginia, Becca solidified her commitment to education through play. Becca holds a teaching certificate from the state of Virginia, and spent the last year teaching drama for Fairfax County Public Schools. She continues her arts education as a member of the Kennedy Center's CETA program (Changing Education Through the Arts).
Leonard Madrid: Leonard Madrid is a graduate student at UNM in playwriting. He has a BFA in Theatre from ENMU, and BA in design for performance from UNM. He trained with actors for social awareness, Gorilla Tango Comedy Theatre, and Second City Theatre in Chicago. He was instructor for level four improv at Gorilla Tango for two years and performed on the Ensemble for three years.
Alex Knight: Alex is a theatre major at the University of New Mexico. He was the head of the training program as well as artistic director of Gorilla Tango Comedy Theatre. He taught Saturday drama camp at UNM as well as levels one through three at Gorilla Tango. He was on the Gorilla Tango Improv Ensemble for three years.
Steve Lucero: Steve Lucero has been trained at both the Gorilla Tango Theatre and Second City in Chicago. He taught at the Gorilla Tango training center and was on the ensemble for two years. He has a degree in Physics from UNM.
