3. Legislative Session begins January 15th at noon
and ends on February 14. Please consider helping us watch legislation. All you need are a computer, a little instruction, and a few minutes during the session. For information on becoming a “Bill Detective” reply to this email address and let us know if you prefer an attachment or the information copied into the text of an email.
Please remember to pray daily for the protection of home school freedoms and family values, especially during this time.
4. New Mexico Family Issues Website just in time for the legislative session!
CAPE’s purpose includes providing information about home school issues that are discussed during legislative sessions.
Home school issues require strong family values, so family issues and legislation must be followed as well. We are thrilled to announce that the Christian Life Committee of the Baptist Convention of New Mexico has set up a website at www.clcbcnm.org to enlist prayer warriors from every faith to pray for their state senators and representatives and other state government officials for this up coming 2008 legislative session.
The site will be updated to inform believers about legislation affecting marriage and the family. Please, please sign up and get involved!
5. Spring 2008 PLEC Student Essay Contest
The Public Legal Education Committee (PLEC) of the State Bar of New Mexico is beginning its promotion of the state-wide 11th Annual Essay Writing Contest. For the first time, the contest will include home school students. This is a great way for local homeschoolers to advance their writing skills and gain recognition as high achieving youth.
The PLEC Student Essay Contest is for all students whether or not they are interested in pursuing law in their future. It is open to all high school juniors and seniors. Legal knowledge or experience is not required for students to participate. Contestants will be given a legal scenario and supporting laws or documents to answer a specific question focused around a certain topic. PLEC will provide detailed guidelines and instructions regarding how to write the legal essay.
The question will be distributed with an instructional packet to local schools and home school groups in January. The essay deadline will be in March and members of PLEC, along with several NM District Court judges, will judge the essays. The winners will be announced publicly on May 1st which is Law Day. The first prize winner will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship, the second prize winner will receive a $500 cash scholarship, and the third prize winner will receive a $250 cash scholarship.
The process of gathering a list of how many home school groups and students will be interested in participating has begun. Please contact Dee Baker, www.nmadvocacy.org,
dee@nmadvocacy.org (505) 266-3166 in Albuquerque, (866) 376-9625 toll free, if you are interested and would like to receive the instructional entry packet.

7. CAPE at the Capitol
Invest ONE DAY of your life with an opportunity to change the future! CAPE annually sponsors CAPE at the Capitol, a day when home school families from all across New Mexico convene in Santa Fe at the state capitol building, known as The Roundhouse, to celebrate Home Education Week in New Mexico and to meet and greet state legislators. This annual assembly is our opportunity to bring the face of home schooling to New Mexico's leaders, to remind them that we take our citizenship seriously, and to express sincerely our appreciation for the public service of these citizen legislators. Click here for more information. Be watching in future alerts for the meeting location on the Thursday, February 7th.
8. TeenPact NM is a comprehensive leadership experience that brings kids closer to Jesus Christ, makes them better leaders, and positions them to impact public policy in their state. During TeenPact, students meet important officials, interact with other like-minded students, and have more fun at the capitol than they could have ever imagined. Students leave inspired and challenged with an intensive desire to change America for Christ. The CAPE board of directors strongly recommends this highly effective civics opportunity. Link here for details.
Have a Blessed New Year!
