Battle of the Books
An exciting annual state-wide battle of knowledge! Participants read 20 pre-selected books and compete in teams to see who knows the most. Loma Colorado Public Library is sponsoring one team for each level for the 2008 Battle. The Elementary Division is for 4-5th graders (students must be at least 9 years old to participate), while the Middle School Division is for grades 6-9. The event will be held on Saturday April 19, 2008 in Las Cruces at Onate High School. Carpooling will be encouraged. For more information about the event of list of books, please drop by the library or visit the website www.nmbattleofthebooks.org. To register for participation, please stop by or call Youth Services at the library. Team size is limited.
Chess for Kids
Chess players up to age 12 are invited to play a game of chess in the Children's Department on Tuesdays 4:30-5:30pm. Bring your own board if you have one. Partners are casually chosen amongst participants. New players are welcome. Volunteers of any age interested in teaching chess to new players are also welcome. Please check the children's program calendar for occasional cancellations.
Design Squad
Like to invent? Brainstorm? Design? Build? Test? Join us for a special challenge each week. Based on the PBS Show of the same name. Ages 9-12. Mondays 2:30-4:00pm. Limited to 12 participants. Weekly sign-ups at each session with priority given to returnees. Please see the calendar for specific dates.
Tutoring
Tutoring by National Honor Society students from Rio Rancho High School is available on Saturday afternoons. Please see the calendar for specifics.
