offer discounts on the Rosetta Stone foreign language software
programs. So I'm excited to let you know that right now, for a short

2007 you can choose any two-level set for only $299, and save another $40.

If you think you may want to add a language-learning elective to your
school year, or you've been considering diving into a new language
yourself... then now is a great time to order one of these easy and
effective programs for your Windows or Mac computer.

A true story about the power of new words...

A few years ago, a friend of mine spent several weeks in Guangzhou,
China, helping local engineers perfect an electronic component. With
no time to truly learn Mandarin before he left, Bob dove into a pile
of phrase books hoping to at least master some basics he would need.
That didn't work too well.

"Honestly, I learned more by just listening, responding and
practicing," he said. What I got to see in the years that followed was
the impact Bob could make in the lives of Chinese Americans all around
us, by using a powerful phrase in Mandarin.

"Xie-xie," he said whenever the slightest opening presented itself.

It means "thank you." Though it's the only Mandarin I know, I still
love offering it liberally in my new, richly diverse home city of
Denver, Colorado. I also know "thank you" in Spanish (gracias) and
German (danke), the two languages I would like to add to my native
English.

But for me, this power to "connect" with others in their own
language--just a little bit--makes me want to ask, "How much more
could I do with more words, with a better understanding of how to use
them?"

I need the process of learning a new language to be easy (and
extremely motivating), and so I see Rosetta Stone as my best choice.

It's a lot like the way you learned your first language--by "natural
immersion." And it works.

As children, we all learned our native language by natural immersion.
We listened and compared as words and sentences turned from mysterious
gibberish into thoughts, feelings and ideas. The simple "secret" to
Rosetta Stone's success is in how it creates high involvement and
motivation in students as they learn this way.

Each self-paced lesson guides students through a simple task--they
match words and phrases with images on their computer screen. Moving
steadily toward complete and complex sentences, students are drawn in
to the game-like lessons. Rosetta Stone is loaded with auditory,
visual, and informative feedback that encourages learners to push
themselves for improved scores and times. Instead of "How much longer
do I have to do this?" from your students, imagine hearing, "I'll bet
I can do it better or faster!"

This natural approach seems a great match for Sonlighters, and many
parents agree; here's a recent comment from a mom on the Sonlight Forums:

"Rosetta Stone definitely allows your children to learn on their own.
Show them how to use it, and walk away. They learn more by exploring
then by having you sit by them. With other programs, my son was so
discouraged that I couldn't leave his side. He had no clue what he was
listening to. I had to spend a lot of time looking words up.

"The Rosetta Stone computer program is absolutely fascinating. It even
held mine and my husband's attention for a good hour together. It
works on every single element of language study--speech, reading,
writing, and listening. And the program keeps track of everyone's
scores for you.

"You get to hear female and male voices, older and younger voices... I
was able to understand everyone I heard. So my recommendation--no
contest whatsoever! If you want something that will genuinely teach
your child a new language, you won't go wrong with Rosetta Stone."

--Sarah H, DeKalb, Illinois

Albuquerque Exhibit: NM Holocaust Museum: Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1...

Hi Tabbi,

I'd like to help get the word out about this immensely important exhibit. The following quote from the announcement sickens our family:

During World War II, thousands of homosexuals, primarily gay men, perished at the hands of the Nazis in concentration camps, along with six million Jews and five million other victims who included Roma (Gypsies), Poles, Jehovah's Witnesses, and the handicapped.

In our family we are aware that the depth and breadth of hatred by Hitler and Nazi Germany needs to continually be guarded against. We hope to keep our hearts and minds open to each person on the planet and invite everyone in the homeschooling community to join us in doing the same. I saw a bumper sticker the other day, "When God said to love your enemies, I think He meant to not kill them." It struck a deep chord in me.

There is great potential for homelearning studies related to this educational exhibit: WW II, religious freedom, Anne Frank, peace studies, and so much more! A teacher's guide will be provided to anyone bringing a school group. Middle or high school teachers can call 247-0606 to schedule a visit.

The New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum are glad to schedule group trips for homeschool groups. They recommend waiting until the APS school year ends; they are booked almost solid with very large groups until then and wanted to be able to give us days when they could better serve us. But there might still be a few days the week of May 15 that aren't just packed. Anyone wanting to organize a group and schedule a group field trip, call the number above. Individuals or families are welcome at any time.

Thanks so much for getting the word out!
Liz Gardner

New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum
Nazi homosexual persecution exhibit opens

hsxmug

Albuquerque, NM. - On April 29, the New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum opens the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's traveling exhibition, Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945. During World War II, thousands of homosexuals, primarily gay men, perished at the hands of the Nazis in concentration camps, along with six million Jews and five million other victims who included Roma (Gypsies), Poles, Jehovah's Witnesses, and the handicapped.

The exhibition will run through June 16 at the New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum's Albuquerque headquarters, 415 Central Avenue Northwest, next to the KiMo Theatre.

The exhibition contains 28 panels depicting the Nazi ideology of persecution of homosexuals, drawing on materials from more than 40 archives in eight countries. "The exhibition explores why homosexual behavior was identified as a danger to Nazi society and how the Nazi regime attempted to eliminate it," says curator Edward Phillips. "The Nazis believed it was possible to 'cure' homosexual behavior through labor and 're-education.' As their efforts to eradicate homosexuality grew more draconian, gay men were subjected to castration, institutionalization and deportation to concentration camps."

Between 1933 and 1945, an estimated 100,000 men were arrested for violating Germany's law against homosexuality and about 50,000 received sentences. Most spent time in regular prisons. An estimated 5, 000 to 15,000 were sent to concentration camps where an unknown number of them perished.

Jerry Small, chair of the local organizing committee, says that the exhibition features a painting by Howard Cooper titled, IN HONOR OF THE ANCESTORS - IN PRAISE OF THE TRIBE, an artistic homage to the outstanding contribution homosexual, bisexual and transgender people have made to humanity throughout history, up to and including the present day. The painting, which will be shown to the public for the first time, measures 70" x 70", and the medium is spray enamel on canvas. "In honoring and praising these men and women and their contribution, we participate positively in the continuing quest for equal rights for all homosexual, bisexual, and transgender people," Small adds.

The exhibit's sponsors are Albuquerque Pride, KUNM-FM, albuquerqueARTS, New Mexico Voice, The Alibi, PFLAG New Mexico and Equality New Mexico.

Details:
The exhibition will run through June 16 at 415 Central NW, next to the KiMo Theatre.
